Probably not as much reason for the characters to be nude in a sci-fi setting as there would be in a medieval setting but I am curious as to the forum's disposition on nudity in video games? I am not advocating that the developers model wangs and vaginas for the mere sake of it but there are many who seem to think that the inclusion of nudity in a game should be avoided at all cost as somehow as soon as you put a naked character model in the game with realistic anatomy (even when the scene calls for it) the game automatically becomes immature, however my opinion on the matter is the avoidance of nudity at all costs is almost as immature as having nudity for the sake of it (perhaps even more so).

 

What I am asking is should the developers be afraid to include nudity in their games? Should showing a character's junk be avoided at all costs or should the developer not shy away from it?

If nudity makes more sense than clothing then they should go with nudity. If there's another shower scene with bra and panties I'll probably just drop the game.

There is nothing wrong with showing nudity: it is the application of that nudity that matters. For example: We see naked Yahg on Sur'kesh during the events of Mass Effect 3. There's no ifs, ands, or but(t)s about that. However, these Yahg are not exactly humping one another in their nudity; they were being studied, examined, and tested upon by the Salarians for a secret uplifting project in order to ensure a Salarian dominance over the galaxy. The Salarians didn't care about them and only needed them alive so there would really be no need to clothe them in the eyes of the scientists. . .and could you imagine the attempt to cloth a creature that hates your guts?

The same applies to the Banshees of ME3, and to certain romance scenes in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Are they naked? Yes. Are they rolling around on the floor sticking X into Y? No. . .unless we're talking about the Banshees, but instead of doing the hanky-panky with brutes, they're shoving their magnetic hands through your chest cavity. That's different.

Now, then you get into the topic of 'When Nudity is a thing, how are sex scenes played out?' but we already have a topic on that so I see no reason to bring it up here.

In my mind, we would cross a bit into porn territory... and I don't necessarily think that's a good thing. Aren't really known for their story telling... 

 

Also I don't mind "junk" (or porn), but neither gender is really aesthetically pleasing in that department and kinda hard to take seriously, unless it was done really well and "tastefull" (whatever that is)... If not I think I'd have a hard time taking it seriously... 

 

I think they should shy away from it... not because it's "omg. JUNK!", but because it would be soooooo hard (pun intended?) to do right (enem... uhm... puns EVERYWHERE!).

Tho something can be said for "jigglebones" (stop it allready) under the clothes and the slightly heightened realism.

Nudity can be used many ways in the game, it can be fanservice or artistic, it can be sexual or non-sexual and so on. As default I'd like most nudity appear in romance scenes in way that makes sense. I don't feel need to show genitalia or boobs though (nipples), since I don't think it brings much, but I don't mind it that much either. I wouldn't want to see lot of fanservice nudity though that is not part of the romances.

The first is a question for scholars to debate for eons to come.

The second? I would still say it is related to the topic, oddly enough, though I mentioned why in the other thread so I will just link my response from there to here.

Will it be like Beowulf fighting naked against the beast Grendel? as long as Bioware did it appropriately/censor the genitals for our teenage audience, I'm good. Heh... it is funny that violence/gore is more widely accepted in the media rather than nudity, even though sex is a natural human act and instinct just like the wildlife, whilst violence is pretty much unnecessary between living beings. 14000 years of wars/atrocities is acceptable compared to a simple sexual act? you know real-life is stranger than fiction.

A bit of another debate and I do get your point, but I think that implies that violence is just as much a part of us (humanity in general) as sex is. It's only recently that we've begun contemplating going about in a different way.

1.The target market,

2. Whether Bio/EA wants to push the ratings limits

3. Does it sell?

4. Advantages to EA/Bio

5. Does it fit certain settings  (ie: bedrooms, beaches, adult bars... etc).

6. Is EA/Bio willing to go the ADULT ONLY game rating

I honestly do not have any issues with nudity in video games as long as it is kept at a sensible level, nobody whapping their extremities out every two seconds

I think the devs should do whatever they want. I'm not afraid of the nudity. I really doubt that they can go so far  that it makes me offended

I'm fine with nudity in a M rated game. Now the purpose for that nudity determines how fine I am with it. That said I tend to believe that major western media is overly censored. It's one of the major reasons that I tend to prefer the book, comic, light novel or manga over the television adaptation of the same material. The artist is typically far freer to create what they want and I typically find that material more enjoyable. 

 

I also find it rather crazy how people are fine with seeing someone's heart violently ripped out and eaten but not a boob. If I was standing next to a person and I had to choose between seeing someone's internal organs ripped out or a boob I'd go with the boob.

I don't mind nudity where it is rightfully placed in the story. Also I don't mind if they don't put details to the nudity like some anime I watch that have bits of nudity like a shower scene. They show the female character nude but don't drawn in the nipples on the boobs or the vagina on the nether region. Thats probably a form of censorship on nudity but at least they didn't draw the character with a bra and panties and taking a shower in the commanders room to try and seduce said commander.

If it is appropriate to the scene and handled in a tasteful way, then they shouldn't shy away from using it. 

 

If they want to avoid it, they should do so with camera angles, not by having the characters in underwear when they should be naked.

I guess it despends. Nudity is fine as long as it's not turned into joke and it's not everywhere. I don't feel like it's especially needed in romances. We can see only kissing, fine for me. BUT STOP SHOWERING IN UNDERWEAR, IT'S DIRTY.

Tastefully done, but I thought CGI in 2007 was better than that.

Boobs and dongs over another kissing cutscene in full armor. Or shower in underwear. Even if there's nudity, there are ways to half-censor it with smart camera angles where a towel rack covers up the boobs or whatever. 

 

DA2: Fenris glows blue, puts his fits through a guy's chest. Literally. Hawke smooches the LI in full plate. Wat. 

 

We're all crippled for how media loves censoring anything sexual. HBO is doing a public service.
