What I'd LIKE to see:

  1. Metal casing for the game
  2. Concept art book
  3. Some physical item like an Actual Pip Boy for the Fallout 4 game
  4. Some character figurines

What I DON'T want to see:

  1. Any exclusive in game content for the pre-order edition.
  2. Multiple pre-order editions each with their own unique pre-order content like with Watch Dogs
  3. Season Content Pass nonsense for DLC that we don't even know is coming.
  4. What ever convoluted non sense that Deus Ex Humanity Divided came up with.

In conclusion:

There are lots of things that Mass Effect Andromeda can do with a Pre Order Collector's edition to make it special. Just please. No exclusive in game content. Exclusive real world goodies however, that is something worth having.

I'd rather no pre-order items at all and let the game sell on it's own merits.

Many companies have used Pre-Orders in an attempt to pad sales numbers to make prdoucts appear better than they are.

Hell Store exclusive Pre-Orders managed to get people to buy a game multiple times which is the lowest form of nickle and dimming.

I'm not really big on preorders, I'd rather wait until game gets patched in playable state and price gets dropped a bit than preorder. It's also bit hard for me to preorder, since there isn't lot of places in my country where you can (I guess I could somehow preorder via PSN though).

However if I was convinced that the game is going to be awesome, which I can't be with games after DAI fiasco, I could preorder if I did get something physical items from it like the one's you listed.

I find that absolutely disgusting. One preorder bonus from Gamestop, differerent one for Amazon, another one for Play.com.

H-I-D-E-O-U-S.

If you can ignore the fact that preorder items tend to suck. they're not designed to be end-game material anyway, and become obsolete less than halfway through the game.

DISGUSTING.

I'm so hoping that Square-Enix "Kickstarter" style pre-order system for the new Deus Ex game fails horribly as it is intentionally locking out content if the game does not receive high enough pre orders.  Stuff like this can not become main stream.

Did DA:I have any pre-order content? Can't remember and I don't think EA does retailer-exclusive content like Ubisoft.

It did have pre-order content but I think it was mostly cosmetic items and a few mounts.

Edit: Forgot they did a big physical release with a lot of items such as cloth maps, books, cards, a statue I think.

But the in game stuff was balanced as it wasn't anything that could break the games difficulty curve and again cosmetic items like thrones and mounts.

Gaa that guy's voice is certainly unpleasant.  But yeah, I agree.  I haven't been following the new Deus Ex and had no idea they were pulling those types of shenanigans.

I agree I think in game content pre-order bonuses are terrible, but unfortunately I don't see them going away...

Sadly yes to both things.  Thankfully DA:I I think was the best BioWare game for pre-order bonuses since Mass Effect 1.

The pre-order content was just the Flame of Inquisition which was just the weapons from the Deluxe version which I am okay with, for if I want to wait to buy the game I just have to by a different edition if those items actually mean something to me unlike most games where you are just out of luck if you want them.

They did have a couple of retailer based bonuses, but those were the dumb product tie ins that had nothing to do with buying the game. They were buying the limited edition of the guide, a logitech product from Newegg, and using Raptr software that is part of ATI cards.  The content for those was a piece of rare jewelry, a mount, and a multiplayer chest.

I reject the notion of pre-orders and refuse to buy anything less than 6 months old.

they did, for ME2. remember the Terminus pack? and don't get me started on the retarded Dr Pepper crap. that stuff tastes HIDEOUS.

that is DISGUSTING. I'm betting cheap-a$$ Ubisoft are the ones to first pick it up.

Sadly what they are doing with Deus-Ex is not new, there were a bunch of Steam years ago including BioShock: Infinite. I wish more places when writing opinion pieces of this would include that information for it shows that it was a failed experiment back then and probably will continue to do so.

I'm waiting for a complete DAI bundle at lower price. That's where I stand on pre-orders.

Make special editions available in all countries around the world, not parts of europe and of course the whole USA.  DAI was simply not available in my country.

The problem I see with giving physical items away is that they will never be good enough for the people that really want them and the people that don't care will discard them.  I think the level of physical items given away would be on-par with what people got when buying The Witcher 3 physically. Things like a steelbook or pipboy just seem to be too costly to produce for pre-orders not to mention the risk of not having enough stock.

The only reason I pre-order a game anymore if it's a game that I REALLY REALLY want on day 1 and it's release date is on a day I don't get paid and then I'll pre-order it. The extra content physical and DLC is optional. I mean I got a deluxe copy of Batman: Arkham Asylum (the one with the bat-rang shaped box) new at Wal-Mart almost a year after it came out for $70 and the code for DLC was valid.

Now the Inqusitior's Edition of DA:I I doubt I will find it outside of eBay.

I like the bobblehead that came with my Borderlands 2 pre order.  If the new Fallout came with one instead of the pip boy I'd probably buy that too.

The other main problem I have with physical pre-order items is resellers.

Lately a lot of people have been camping stores and online sites and grabbing as many pre-orders for specific games as they can in order to re sell them at 3 times the price to people who actually wanted them.

I've noticed a few games doing this: Early Release for pre-orders.  This is the new marketing strategy.

The deus ex pre-order fiasco is a perfect example of what you shouldn't do if you don't want your game to be pirated into oblivion, if a publisher hands out different bonuses for different retailers or locks off content for seemingly no reason it would just result in the pirated version being superior because it would have ALL the content unlocked, wich would be impossible(or overly expensive) to aquire on a legitimate copy in such a case.

Alot of people also feel justified in pirating the game when a company pulls a stunt like that.

I find it hilarious how they worded it as ''hey, you get to customize your game, isn't that awesome!?'' expecting people to buy into that.

On the topic of pre-order content in mass effect: I would prefer if the pre-order bonuses didn't include in-game content of any kind, although I wouldn't mind all that much if they only gave out some extra in-game currency or some weapon that is good early on to make the game easier at the start because the game's difficulty is probably not designed around that anyway, wich is why I tend to avoid those kinds of bonuses all-together as I find they detract from the experience all too often.
