Oh here is a video on the subject.

Bad source to cite, Sterling is what I call a pretender populist, hes arguing for something as a pander, instead of doing anything to actually change it. He's pretty much full of **** most of the time.

The thing that is kind of lost on here is that game companies are doing piecemeal pre-order bonuses as the behest of storefronts; the stores want separate bits to it to provide incentive for consumers to come to them, and companies create a piece of content, now a days by design it seems in their own budgets, to be that incentive.

That is not going to go away due to it being commerce between companies. Places like Wal-Mart can refuse to carry items if they feel it is not financially viable, or if publishers are not supporting their product. This has hurt other aspects of the industry such as indie game development, where digital DLC and downloads has become the equalizer in that realm. It is also not just video games, but also music and tabletop games, to name a few examples that suffer under that.

Well DA:I release was suprisingly good in how it was handled. There were no D1 story DLC and the pre-order bonuses were just minor things.

I'm fine if they stick with DA:I way in this regard.

Oh here is a video on the subject.

A couple points.

1 Dues Ex, that's one of those words I've read but never heard.  so, huh that's how you say it.

2.  Is that  his real voice or is it some kind of affectation?

3.  While I don't like the Dues Ex pre-order plan, the video goes a bit overboard on the problems with pre-orders in general.

The other main problem I have with physical pre-order items is resellers.

Lately a lot of people have been camping stores and online sites and grabbing as many pre-orders for specific games as they can in order to re sell them at 3 times the price to people who actually wanted them.

Especially when I have noticed that resellers can be store employees as well.  There is a store that I won't pickup anything without a manager there because the employees will tell the customer they are all gone because it was limited and then take pocket the item for that customer.

The best pre-order content is no pre-order content.

If they stick to cosmetic stuff or maybe a small amount of weapons/armor I won't care. As long as there is a good varity of such things in the base game of course.

The fault of Pre-orders lands SQUARELY on the shoulders of gamers. If gamers refused to pre-order then pre-orders and their exclusives would die off. Gamers have to stop being idiots and stop pre-ordering games for a pointless bauble. "But i want the bauble." which is why I have little respect for gamers as a community. We are ignorant, narrow minded and as a whole show almost zero capacity for restraint.

I stongly object to exclusive pre-order content, where there is no way to get it unless you pre-order (or even worse, pre-order from a particular shop) but I'm not that bothered if they give away a small DLC free to people who pre-order, as a sort of "thanks for having confidence in us" thing, but then make that content available to purchase for people who didn't.

I disagree.  There are many drug dealers that sell their merchandise to kids, and the scenario you've described lays blame completely on the children.

I reject the notion of pre-orders and refuse to buy anything less than 6 months old.

Yeah i always see patches rolling out a few days after release or immediately at launch. Ill never play the "1.0" version of any game, better to wait for polish.

Are you a Duke? Or Dimwitt?
Duke here is a smart shopper. He waits for all his games and never preorders. By doing this, he has a whole plethora of reviews and opinions of this game to fully determine if this is a good game or bad.
Dimwitt however. Thinks that the arbitrary preorder perks that are offered are so important, he pays for a full copy without any information to go off of and simply assumes that the game will be good, and for all he knows it could be broken on release day again, Without of scrutiny.
Remember boys and girls.
Don't be a Dimwitt!

All I'd ask:

Absolutely no in-game content, whether they be "retailer exclusive" or "pre-order bonus". Anyone who buys the game should be able to experience everything that the game has to offer on Day 1, regardless of whether they pre-order or want to wait until after launch. Post-release DLC is fair game, but an exclusive piece of content for pre-orders? C'mon.

With how the industry is at present, these things aren't going away. But it's a nice thought. I think a soundtrack CD (or redeemable code for the tracks) would be a nice incentive, especially for games like Mass Effect that are renowned for their terrific music.

To me it depends on the content, I have no problems with Weapons or Armours being exclusive to pre-orders, but when you start getting missions becoming exclusive that is what bothers me. Destiny and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided are examples of what I don't like because there is activities locked behind pre-order content or platform exclusivity.  Now I didn't like the "other" bonuses with Dragon Age: Inquisition such as the items with the deluxe strategy guide or the Newegg Logitech promotion, but the pre-order bonus of getting part of the Deluxe edition I am fine with or even giving out "free" multiplayer chests I am okay with.

If you have ME2 on PC check your DLC sub menu.  About a year ago the Terminus Weapon & Armour DLC just appeared in my purchased section even though I never bought the Collector's Edition of ME2 so they may have released it for free.

It kind of depends on what the value to $60 is too you.  Back in my youth a game was a big purchase and yeah I did research before buying, waiting for reviews etc.  Now I spend more on groceries multiple times a week and $60 is a tiny side purchase.  For PC games as a download, I don't bother with it.  But I have been annoyed often enough when dropping by my local GameStop to find out they sold out of the game I wanted for one of the consoles and to me its worth it just to avoid the hassle. I don't care about and I don't think I ever noticed any pre-order bonuses.

I don't preorder games for bonuses, so I don't care that much. What concerns me way more is that Digital Deluxe Edition costs same ammount of money as Collector's Edition, yet it lacks all the physical stuff. PDF with pictures =/= artbook. Also, if a game isn't sold as a digital download, it doesn't exist.

@Killdren88: I'd rather be a Dimwitt and spend €60 (that I have) for a game that I'll play, than Duke and spend hours (that I don't have) researching rewievs that won't tell me what I want to know anyway. Because time is the only thing more important than money.

To me The Witcher 3 indicates everything wrong with pre-order bonuses for they have different bonuses from pre-ordering at different stores, heck they even had different pre-order bonuses based on what digital location you purchased from.

In the age of computers being highly afford, and consoles being highly affordable... Console wars should come to an end!  Meaning developers/publishers shouldn't be bought off by corporations to have exclusives for a particular retailer or console.

Make pre-order bonuses universal. Same bonuses for a PC player that an XB1 and PS4 player would get.
