I've also usually found that fight kinda easy. No need to come in close to kill the Shield generators - you only need to shoot them, and guns are ranged weapons.
Shockwave useful?

Um, I kept Jack with me for her shockwave abilities at Horizon and the portion of the suicide mission -- both featuring quite a bit of close to medium-range combat -- when you're under the biotic specialists' bubble. After struggling with both stages on hardcore without it, I cleared both easily on hardcore with it.
I'm not arguing that it's the best way to do it. I'll leave that to someone else. But it is NOT worthless.
There is more than one way to do things.

i would rather use 2 pull fields rather then 1 shockwave. you can get just as many people maybe more. the plus side is that the rest of your team are going to shoot all the guys in the air. if they are on the ground the vision might be blocked.
