I'm kind of for the dual protagonist option. This would be the game to do it since it since the Inquisitor wouldn't need to have as much screen time as a new protagonist would. I'd like to have the Inquisitor at least be involved in the Solas plot and to at least have some agency over their decisions and tone unlike with Hawke. They can't just dangle "time to save apocalypse boyfriend" and then snatch it away...right? I suppose they could, but I'd feel sour about it. Not that my feelings matter or anything, but there they are. Patrick did say he hoped to give Solavellan some closure and that he hoped Trespasser made that clear, so that's something.

On the other hand I do want to play primarily as a new protagonist and experience new friendships and romances. I can't imagine Solas related things are all we'll be dealing with, and the Inquisitor wouldn't have to be involved at all times with the Solas plot as long as it's clear that they're giving orders (because I've convinced myself that if nothing else we're at least going to be among those new people they were talking about at the end). Besides, it would be so much fun if the new protagonist could be like "why are risking the world just so you don't have to kill that bald old fart you used to date?" and then sabotage the Inquisitor's efforts or something.

I'm hoping DA4 will be more like DAO in the sense that there's a lot of things going on at the same time. I see Solas as the archdemon and I'm hoping for an additional story and villain (like Loghain) that takes up most of the game and that is more connected to our new PC. And then closer to the end, it's when Solas and the Inquisitor come into play and maybe then we could have the opportunity to play as the Inquisitor on key moments (like important decisions concerning Solas and of course when we'll finally face him again).

I think this is the best approach because there are a lot of people that think it doesn't make any sense for a new PC to go after Solas but there's also a lot of people who don't want to play a full game with the Inquisitor again. I stand on both those categories so I'm hoping for a "in-between".

There's an idea and an interesting point to boot.

This is sort of what I'm hoping for, actually. A new protagonist dealing with the main issues in the story (Qunari invasion?) and the Inquisitor's Solas hunting going on in the background, sort of intertwined with the rest of the story but only coming to the forefront towards the end, and then let the PC take control of the Quizzy.

Also: didn't the developers mention that giving the player access to a dialogue wheel for previous player characters were something they were thinking about a couple of years ago before we even knew whether Hawke/HoF would appear in DAI? I seem to remember them saying something to that effect, that it could be a way to do justice to previous PCs. If that is something they considered using for Hawke, that should certainly be something they would be considering for the Quizzy now that the Quizzy is so integrally linked to the ongoing plot, shouldn't it?

...

Here's to hoping. I very much like the idea and think it could be both a neat and interesting narrative to explore but I can understand if the developers decide they are not too keen on trying it out.

Still, hope is good and alive.

This!

I would see the Inquisitor perhaps at the beginning of DA4, recruting the new PC, but then very much fading to the background. As I said, perhaps doing War Table like missions. No new LI for the Inquisitor is really necessary. In this respect Bioware could totally concentrate on the new PC. Also the new PC could accumulate new companions etc.

Loghain and the Archdemon is a good comparison. The new PC deals with "Loghain" and Quizzy finally with Solas... Perhaps decisions you take with your new PC will also influence the final ending. So the new PC does not get relegated too much to the side in the end. How about he/she could actually descide whether to involve the Quizzy in the final show down with Solas, so the player would have ultimate control...

I know the developers might not be interested in creating a unique set of combative animations for the Inquisitor to use but I wonder if an alternative would be to simply not put the Inquisitor in combative scenarios outside of cutscenes.

Character animation has never really been Bioware's strong suit; Naughty Dog, they are not. As good as a lot of the models looked in still frame, character movement and rigging in DAI were terrible (elf bodies, anyone?). Do you really think they are going to be able to pull off something that is actually challenging in that regard? I can't say I have confidence in them doing a good job of it.

Possibly since in the final Trespasser cutscenes, they managed to show the Inquisior with their amputated arm and it seemed fine in my opinion. Then again, I've never been especially sharp-eyed when it came to animation oddities.

For clarification: you were referring to in-cutscene animation, yes?

Both are pretty bad, but it's particularly noticeable in cutscenes. The one that stands out most to me is the scene in Haven right before the main title screen where Cassandra walks through the Inquisition forces and up the steps to where the (soon to be) Inquisitor and the advisors are waiting, her walking animation is extremely stiff and unnatural. I remember seeing it's for the first time and thinking, "No human being walks like that" (or at least not one that hasn't suffered a spinal injury, anyway).

No, the Inquisitor wasn't as compelling a character as Hawke or the Warden and his/her story is done with Trespasser even more than the other 2.
