You have your 9 companions, then you have a 10th which is Hawke, who can fill the Warrior, Rouge or Mage role. His/Her personality would be what you set in DA Keep.
A sarcastic Hawke and Varric in the same party would have been a riot.

In a perfect world, where developers have as much time and resources as they desire.
However I would see an issue with assigning a specialization to Hawke, seeing as some of the specializations from DA:2 don't exist in Inquisition. This could break a lot of people's immersion, as their Hawkes aren't translated properly from a combat perspective.
Yes that would make a lot more sense with the story, having Hawke stick around to fix his/her mess as mentioned. It would take a lot of resources to voice three different personalities and classes, plus any banter involving the variables in DA2. I would have loved it had it been implemented well, but given that the brief appearance in game polarizes people, I don't know if it would have been worth the effort.

Hawke: so your followers actually change out of their armor sets when you ask them to?
Inquisitior: Of course. I have full control over my party, after all.
Hawke: that must be nice...
Varric: hey, you never asked!
Yeah I always argued that Hawke should've at least been an agent throughout the game, provided he survives the events of Adamant. Makes extra sense considering he/she could justifiably be assigned either Forces, Secrets, Connections, or Inquisition perks. Wherever you feel they would best serve, similar to the way they handled Michel de Chevin.
A while back I created a very in depth thread discussing Hawke's misrepresentation in Inquisition's plot. To this day, I feel like Hawke should've been introduced to the Inquisition way sooner, that he/she should've been involved in the recruitment of the Templars or Mages because that's the story they actually fit...unlike the Grey Wardens which Hawke has no real ties to.
I also think Hawke should've been present during In Your Heart Shall Burn, as Corypheus' big reveal would've surprised Hawke more than anyone else. And if BioWare had decided to end Hawke's story right there (by death), it would've been very appropriate. Hawke's final stand against Corypheus while the Inquisitor and friends escape Haven.
Cool in theory, but even Hawke's very brief cameo had a lot of people claiming that it wasn't "THEIR Hawke" sooo I don't think an entire game with Hawke acting independently of the player would have gone over well.
Yep there's no way they could have given him/her a character arc that wouldn't leave at least half the people screaming that Hawke's was breaking from the character they roleplayed. The current cameo didn't really work very well in this regard as it is.
The way Hawke might have worked better is through a secondary protagonist route, akin to how TW3 has segents where the player fights and responds as Ciri.

This, absolutely. "Corepheus is MY responsibility"; immediatiely leaves for the Anderfels. Making him a companion sounds too difficult logisticaly, but an agent would have been perfect.
Having Solas, Varric and Troll Hawke in the same party.... It would explode due to the comical banter that will occur.

Yet they equipped my archer Hawke with daggers.
At least that should've been possible.
But it's better than having her disappear.

It would have been better than the horrible way they wrote him. Going on about blood magic never leading to any good and poor justification blah blah.... when all along it's possible he was a blood mage if you had so chosen in DA2.
Hawke would have made a better inquisitor period, never mind a sloppy companion, but it BSN an that answers everything
I would have no issues with Hawke being a companion, but I guess BioWare has to work extra careful not to annoy the kids that will whine about their immersion or how it's not their Hawke and other trivial crap.
BioWare are continuing with new player characters every new game, and they really need to commit to that by having the past PCs show up and treat them like their own character, or it's always going to fall short. They need to just ignore the whine on the forums, as long as they do a good job with it, people will respect it and enjoy it, only a few would cry.

While I don't completely agree with you, I still have the feeling that Hawke was initially planned to be the Inquisitor.
