This is an open, free thread for any and all discussion regarding character gripes and/or praises. Don't worry, you won't be banned arbitrarily for voicing an opinion, whether it be benign, negative, or contrary to the majority opinion.

Also, as long as it's discussing a character, it's on topic.  I will not report you to a moderator stating that it's off topic when in reality it's probably just because I didn't like the topic of discussion and tend to be a huge thread dictator.  Which isn't cool.  No one likes thread dictators.

Gripes

Vivienne- I can't think of a single redeemable trait about this character.  Her personal fetch quest was....odd and uneventful and had the exact same outcome regardless of the choice you made (though I suppose I should be expecting that at this point in Bioware games).  She's a well-off hypocrite who claims mages should be leashed when she probably won't be one of the ones leashed when push comes to shove because of her status.  Ergo, she shouldn't be telling anyone how to live.

Varric- The guy went from bro of all bros in DA 2 to humorless stick in the mud in DA 3.  Character progression?  Or Character de-evolution?  You decide.

Praises

Lord Otranto - Well written, witty, doesn't speak like he was authored by a tumblr fan-fic?  Major props!  A shame we didn't get to see more of him in Josephine's personal story arc.

Lord Xenon the Antiquarian-A pity a desiccated corpse has more lore and backstory than half the roster of DA combined.  Love this guy's dialogue.  Genuinely made me laugh, unlike some of the other humor that was shoehorned in during the main story.

You can't punch women!  CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE!  :P

You can capture men and make them tranquil, you can kill women in battle, but punching women in a cutscene straight up?  NO

I'll always praise Cassandra, watching her grow as a Character is so fun and neat. Even before I knew her whole story, since I first met her in DAII, I've always loved her, something about her always intrigued me.

Sera actually warmed up to me. She can be a bit hard to understand, but once you take the time to learn her, she's quite neat.

As for gripes... I'm not a fan of Vivenne either, she always struck me as a piece of metal that refuses to bend or dent. Gets to a point where I've thought about just not recruiting her... But I usually do and just don't talk to her.

Blac... I mean Thom Rainier I'm on the fence about. I like the character development he gets, but he... Kinda falls flat.

Gripes:
Vivienne: **** you, ****.

Praise:
Sera: This is mainly about her with an elven lover but still here we go. So in the base game she has to sort of overcome(Sera's definition of the word) the inquisitor's elfeyness. And even after reaching love status it's still not easy for her. But then in Trespasser she's like actively worrying about how the inquisitor feels about the elven gods and all that. It's like she started wearing her big girl pants over that 2 year break. So ya I thought that progression was really well done.

Solas: don't really feel like writing any more but ya big thumbs up on Solas, particularly after his involvement on Tresspasser.

My biggest gripe is that Iron Bull has a big black censor bar over his meticulously researched and lovingly crafted dick.

NOT COOL, Bioware.

Praise:
  • Animation, for all the characters.  Especially the facial animations.  When Dorian smiles or Sera does her adorable Sera-snerk or Solas does the sad puppy face, I really feel it.
  • Solas: I hoped for him to be either an interesting love interest or an interesting villain.  I never, ever in a million years dreamed I'd get both in the same character.  Mad, mad props for this character and I can't wait to see where he goes next.
  • Cassandra: Cass is a character who could easily have turned into a Knight Templar-ish caricature.  Instead, she was wonderfully heartfelt, and her views on faith and religion were some of the most interesting in the game.
  • Calpernia:  I was really surprised by how much I liked Calpernia despite her relatively short screen time.  I really hope she returns in future games.  I want sassy Tevinter party times with her, Dorian, and Maevaris.
Gripes:
  • Secondary characters: The non-Inner Circle cast had very little personality, for the most part.  For example, I only took interest in Celene, Briala, or Gaspard because I read the books.  In-game, they felt flat and underdeveloped.  I loved the bit characters in DA:O/A and DA2 (ie; Master Wade and Herren, Saarebas, Sandal, etc.), but the ones in Inquisition were by and large forgettable.
  • Main Villain: Corypheus was IMO good before Haven, and disappointing after.  And I don't think Solas being the next villain is a decent excuse for this; I spent way more time in opposition to Corypheus than Solas.  He should actually feel somewhat threatening after I get Skyhold.
  • Returning PCs: Hawke's cameo was short enough that it didn't seriously bother me, but if s/he'd been around for more of the game, the lack of control would have really started grating.  I mean, here's my blood mage Hawke who drank the Anders Kool-Aid, preaching on about the dangers of magic

Praises

- Sera is a bag of thorny issues, disturbing hypocrisy, varied humor, annoyance, teenage angst, racial angst, heartfelt confessions, strange friendships, off-color commentary, weird theories, anxieties, lack of character development and heavy character development. I love her and sometimes I feel like a should hate her. So, yeah, Bioware. Good job on making me love this utter nutter.

- Cole is delightful weird.

- Iron Bull's a total bro.

- Dorian's fun and amicable.

- Cassandra's take on belief and anxiety over morality and corruption is refreshing.

- Cullen's character arc and evolution through three games is interesting to watch and satisfying to play through.

- And Solas for all the grief he puts you through is still a captivating character that makes you want to save him if you can.

Gripes

- Vivvy will always be an intimidating adviser with an... interesting perspective on politics that I don't share. Besides that though, she never changes in the least from what I've seen and her emotional stoicism leaves me feeling cold and disinterested. Only time I really cared for her was when she was talking about magic in a scientific manner, but since I have Dorian and Solas doing that she's not very necessary.

- Varric is fine. Just fine.

- And Josie is nice and competent. That's as much as I got from her unfortunately.

- Leliana gets kinda of creepy regardless of whether you Harden or Unharden her, in my opinion.

- Blackwall can be rather dry at points, but his companion quest and backstory make up for it.
