Why Josephine's romance is, in my opinion, the worst one I've ever played

Solas' romance delivers in spades on intensity and drama, so I think people don't miss the sex scene so much.

Though I wouldn't want every romance available to be quite that dramatic.

Hmm, that's actually a really good point I hadn't thought about.

I expected the option to be given during the scene.

Then I discovered that Lord Otranto was a pretty decent guy and was fine with everyone parting on good terms.

Well, still no regrets on taking the Underworld Knowledge option.  That's just how he rolled.

But yeah, glad I didn't seriously mess him up or anything.

her concern was for the Inquisitor, both the potential for scandal as well as the possibility that the Inquisitor could be badly injured or even killed.  Accidents are always possible, after all

Of course, my qunari inquisitor, a battle-hardened warrior-mercenary, probably could have just decked him Mal Reynolds-style, and be done with it ... B)

"Mercy is the mark of a great man. [stab] Guess I'm just a good man. [stab] Well... I'm all right."

While I could do with a lot less Disney and ambiguity in her romance arc, I quite liked the duel scene. I thought it was one of the better romance scenes in the series.

On a side note, I'm hoping Duke Otranto makes an appearance in DA4.

Brotranto was truly a worthy opponent. Especially if you broke up with Josie and chose to keep fighting him for the lulz.

I was half tempted to marry him myself.

=In a similar way the whole duel thing feels like it goes totally against who Josie is and the fact the issue is hand waved away with an "I love you" really just grates on me.[/spoiler]

I don't think it really goes totally against who Josie is.  She is, after an Antivan noblewoman, the duel isn't to the death and she adores romantic gestures.  Just look at her incredibly silly romance with Blackwall if you don't go for her.

I'm surprised that you consider Josephine's romance worse than Liara or Kelly's, OP. Liara's romance potentially starts in the first (or second?) conversation with you, and consisted of "Oh, you touched a Prothean beacon, I think I'm attracted to you". No flirting to start things off. I mean, you can be an absolute d*ck to her and she'll be immediately interested. I like her romance, but it's no less abrupt. I'd argue that Merrill and Anders' also seem to start abruptly, for different reasons. As for Kelly's, it has so little content that it barely compares to the other romances. You get just a handful of brief conversations and a dance. Josie definitely has more to her romance than that. Your morality can also completely contrast both of theirs, with no consequences.

As for the tone of the romance, I get that it's a matter of personal taste. Personally, I really liked it. After the turbulence of romancing Sera with an elf, then doing Solas' exercise in emotional masochism romance, I welcomed some smooth-sailing and fluff. Even then there's a hiccup with her calling off the romance so she can resolve the Otranto problem.

You make a good point about the duel and acting against Josie's wishes. I have to admit, it didn't really occur to me before. But I don't think the duel was meant to be entirely serious. The whole thing is like a shout-out to old swash-buckling romance films, which does feel rather Josie-ish. Also, I think calling it 'violence' is a stretch, because Otranto and the Inquisitor were never in danger from each other. It seemed more like fencing as a sport. They could've similarly resolved their differences by duelling for Josie via a round of golf or a drinking competition.  This just fits the 'old school romance style' better.

The duel is also not a replacement for the sex scene, that would be the cuddling scene in the Inquisitor's quarters later. I do think she needed some more content (maybe a few extra scenes?), but I don't think one of those needed to be a sex scene. I'm fine with the ambiguity. Now a scene where you meet Josephine's family, that I would've loved so much. Maybe Yvette could've come to Skyhold after WEWH, and there could've been some great scenes with that.

On a side note, I'm hoping Duke Otranto makes an appearance in DA4.

I would love that!

Liara's romance is by far the worse romance in every Bioware game. Liara feels like a teenager who just went through puberty and is having her first schoolgirl crush, remaining adoring toward Shepard no matter what she does or says. The writers went out of their way to give it "narrative justification" ("look: she' over 100 years old, and she has a PhD, so it's totally okay and your Shepard is not a manipulative ephebophile taking advantage of her immaturity"), but these are barely better than what Kojima did with Quiet.

At least Josephine, "naive in love" as she may be, feels like an actual adult. To paraphrase Sera: creepy romance is creepy.

I romanced Josie in both of my completed playthroughs. She isn't exactly my favorite Bioware romance ever, but I thoroughly enjoyed her arc. I loved that it was quite sweet and romantic...and dueling Otranto was just awesome (imo). Not sure how I would rank her, though - possibly after Liara, Leliana and Viconia (my top 3), but above the DA2 romances and most ME romances.

From ME? I'd rather choose Tali, speaking of DA romances, Josephine was... well, not my favourite but better than the straight male options on DA2.

Much as I love Liara, her romance was all over the place after ME1 and ME3 kinda made her act really strange in regards to her relationship to Shepard.

Actually, one thing that might be fun is having a mage duel scene in Tevinter in the next game, if there's some LI who can only be romanced by a mage.

(Or if the PC for the next game is automatically a mage, something that I hope happens.)

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........

Bioware, please don't impose this mage-only thing for the next game. I would like to be able to play as a dwarf and limiting my options to mage alone makes that rather unlikely to happen.

Sincerely, Catche Jagger.

I did Josephine's romance and honestly it probably was my least favorite one out of all of them, I didn't mind the duel but Josephine's romance didn't 'click' for me like the others. I don't dislike her romance, it was probably just the least interesting to me.

Bah. Why on earth would you want the game to be worse by cutting out the class system? I'll be damned if my beloved rogue is taken away from me. A virulent pox upon all those who try.

Because you could put a lot more detail into the magic system, which seems a bit central for such a mage-centric setting. It might also be necessary to give blood magic its due.

I'd rather blood magic die in the void before mundane skills go by the wayside.

I wouldn't mind if the PC had some form of inherent magical ability in the next game Mark of the Rift style, provided it didn't impact class choice and design, given we're going to Tevinter and magic in some form or another is basically to be expected to some extent.

That said, I'm almost tempted to wish we were forced to play as muggles just because of your weird obsession with forcing mages and blood magic on everyone.
