How do the new rewards work?

When you turn on a trial, it says something about 'an increased chance of receiving special shipment'. But what does that mean?

Do you have to kill a certain amount of enemies with the trials on? Do you have to have them on for a certain duration? Do you have to have them on when mission complete appears?

And do you get a message saying there's a special delivery?

And I heard something about saving and reloading for different rewards?

you get a message when you get a special delivery, and yes can reload to before you open the chest to see what you get.

From what I've read each trial offers "points" depending on its impact and after a "points threshold" you get the special shipment. I can tell for sure that killing things give shipments but I'm unsure about other EP-gains.

My observations from reload-spamming the chests indicate that the chests offer different item tables. T3 masterwork materials were the most frequent rewards in every chest while sigils and uniques didn't overlap between the chests I checked but repeated themselves numerously in their particular chest (e.g. I got the perma-chill staff in one chest 5 times while none in another. There I got the glyphes staff many times but never the perma-chill one).

Is this for Trespasser? I am in the middle of playing the other 2 DLC's currently and haven't run into this yet....so yeah :)

I activated two trials shortly before What Pride Had Wrought (focus reset and enemy level scaling) and so far haven't received a single item.

Do the trials have to be activated at the beginning of a new game?

You can switch them on and off. The more you switch on, the higher the chance to get a reward. I started a run with all trials on and received about 2 shipments per level. Approximately.

So it goes level-wise?

No not level wise. Until now i only got shipments after an enemy died. Even if the battle was still going on. So idk if it goes by kill exp or exp gain in general. But i didnt count the enemies in between shiplments.

The more trials you have on, the higher the chance for shipment it. It's stated in the game. But except that?

I think you get a chance to get something every time you encounter something or someone affected by trials. Like scaled enemy. Or stronger enemy. Or if you have Travel Light, place where supply cache should be.

But that's only from my observations.

Weird that I never received anything then. Camped a few times, slew enemies, leveled up and did a main quest.

All my rewards came pretty much directly after I killed an enemy.

That being said, the rewards aren't all *that* good. It seems most are just 'fun' things like a greataxe that changes your auto-attack into a whirlwind (seriously, I thought I was going to die of laughter with Bull twirling like a ballerina ). Or a bow that fires explosive shots every time you fire.

Sure, there are some rewards that are powerful, but it's not like you need 'm to succeed. I consider them a bonus to the awesomeness that are the trials.

To me, the fact that I no longer overlevel entire zones by a good margin is a reward in itself. Add to that that with the Walk Softly trial I actually encounter enemies who aren't carbon copies of each other, I'm playing this game almost as if it was the first time I played it. Nothing like encountering a Nug which can basically kill your entire party. Hahaha.

Love. It. :D

Only happens once in a blue moon though. :P

Best part of the trials is simply running into a regular mook trash group and finding out there's a big guy with a two-hander in that group which has been upgraded several levels above your own, starts with full guard, high resistances on top of that and starts nearly one-shotting Cassandra with their two-handed mauls.

First time that happened was yesterday on a new character on nightmare. Running around in the Hinterlands, killing some mage/templar groups on my way to the rift and shards, only to find myself in a life or death fight at random with 2 guys like the mobs I described above, a few archers and some mages with sellswords. All were at least my level (only level 4 in this playthrough :P) or higher thanks to the trials, up to double my level. Some of which had skills I'd never seen pre-Skyhold. Only to be ambushed by a group that spawned behind me. Really spices things up compared to the usual steamroll. Managed to survive by using 7 potions. Some boss fights I've had in this game are tame compared to this fight. :D

I'm actually checking out groups in tactical camera before engaging them if groups are bunched up, as not to run into any nasty surprises. Haha.

Don't think I want to know if this trial can upgrade dragons and giants too.  :o

-snip-

My favourite is running into Mage that has Fade Cloak and Dispel. Add Spellbinders with Mind Blast and that's one interesting fight.

Tho I must admit, 2H enemies are close behind them. With their Leaping Shotting archer friends.

And now, because of you, I want to run into dragon that got affected by both Even Grounds and Walk Softly.

Gotta love the unpredictability the trials bring.
