It’s no coincidence that Solas looks like a cross between Homer Simpson and Doctor Evil. His entire story is a classic slapstick device: the clown repeatedly trying to fix something but making it hilariously worse each time. The additional comedy gold comes from the ridiculous schemes he comes up with. Plus he does it all in a series of comical outfits and silly hats!

This is a short but accurate summary of his story:

Ooooh those dang Evanuris make me so mad! I’m the defender of the elves and I’m gonna save them by…making this veil thingy! What could possibly go wrong?

Doh!

Ok, that didn’t go so well. My veil seems to have exploded the world. And now the elves aren’t immortal. And they’re all miserable and whiny and look like stick men with funny arms.

Oh well, nap time…

[Wakes up] I’ve got it! I’ll save the world by creating a thing called an Orb of Destruction and then I’ll give it to the most totally evil guy I know. What could possibly go wrong?

Doh!

Ok, so it turns out the evil guy did something evil and destructive with the Orb of Destruction. Who would’ve thunk it? Hmm. Now what?

I’ve got it! I’ll destroy the world! Again! What could possibly go wrong?

To sum up, that's Solas on the left. I just wish we'd been given the option to point and laugh in the ending scene.

But yes, he is an odd fish for a villain. At least he has less hammy speech than Coryphemus.

He also looks like Lex Luthor and thinks just like him in the way he believes he's the savior of his race while everyone actually just seems to hate him.

Loghain is still the best antagonist of the series.

Solas knew that creating the Veil would take immortality from the elves.  If they had known what he was planning, most of them, even those who were oppressed and would eventually die as pawns of the Evanuris, because they would have been afraid of the change.  However, Solas believes that "sometimes the wise must give people what they need, not what they want."'

Solas probably didn't make the orb.  My guess is that it is an artifact from the time before the Veil.  In that magical world, perhaps such orbs grew on trees, or formed from a person's thoughts.  When he woke up, things were much different and much worse than they were when he entered uthenera.  He probably hadn't intended to wake up until later, but because he "woke, still weak, a year before [he] met you", he had to put his plan into action.  His orb didn't have enough power, likely because it sustained him while he slept.  He needed to 'charge' it, and sought the most powerful being he could find to give the orb as much power as possible.  Corypheus somehow knew the secrets of "effective immortality", and was able to unlock the orb - something Solas had not expected.  This is about the only point at which Solas didn't foresee something, though I wouldn't necessarily call it comedic.

He wants to destroy the world because it is the only way that his world will not be destroyed.  Either choice he makes will mean the destruction of one world.  He prefers that his world not be the one destroyed.

Loghain was an great Villain, but crazy Solas may have him beat. Just because he is such an excellent liar.

He only ever lies by omission.

Do you believe he has never before seen veilfire, and that those ancient elven devices that strengthen veil (even though there was no veil until he created it) are truly strengthening the veil?
