I spent over an hour trying to get intestines so I could fight the Dragon in the Western approach, but with no luck until I switched the Even Ground trial off.

Hey I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but it seems the new Trials, specifically Even Ground, are causing Quillbacks to not drop Quillback intestines. Instead almost all of them are dropping Alpha Quillback spines.

That's not a new bug, that's an old bug. Same thing happened to me in Patch 9. The only way I could fix it was to roll back to a save previous to picking up the collection quest from Frederic and taking the quest again, being careful not to kill any Quillbacks before getting the quest. That's what seems to bug it. Or maybe it's the other way around, get all the guts first, then get the quest. I don't remember, it was one or the other.

Is it?....I've never had this before, and usually have no trouble getting intestines before or after meeting him. The Alpha Quillback spines however, are another matter. I must have twenty of those, and I'm not even playing a Rogue.

I have recently run those quests and had Even Ground enabled. What level are you?

It doesn't happen in every PT. I had it happen 2 out of 4.

Currently level 17. I was level 14/15 when I tried collecting the intestines. I found that switching Even Ground off solved the problem, and I was able to fight the Dragon.I have recently run those quests and had Even Ground enabled. What level are you?
Side note. I noticed that when I hovered over the Quillbacks with Even Ground off, it showed that all of them were Elite, but it was faded out. I suspect this Trial is forcing all Quillbacks to be Elite, thus making them drop Alpha Spines instead of intestines when it's enabled.
Anyway, thank you for your replies.

That is odd. It shouldn't turn them into elite. Even Ground should just raise their level, not promote them to elites.

I agree. With other enemies Even Ground is working as intended. But for some reason tactical cam shows that all the Quillbacks are elite. On the plus side, the bug I was having with the intestines can be reversed by simply switching the Trial off......and it's good news should I decide to play as a Rogue Archer and take Varric's specialisation.

Really? On units "promoted" they become elite for me on occasion.
