If you don't do his personal quest the chargers still live but he is still technically with the qun so he betrays you.
Getting the Chargers killed could have been the true purpose. The Qunari have proven to be very deceptive.

I heard he can be killed in the latest dlc.
If that was an option in the main game, I would choose it to see the results

Technically it might happen in a DLC. I wonder what officially happens to the Chargers in case of traitor-Bull. Wish we had an epilogue slide for them, Or better yet - an option to judge them ourselves. With either of two Big Choices Chargers are very likely to be accused\suspected.

This. Just happened in a playthrough of mine. I had spared the Chargers and thought that this would keep the betrayal from happening, but nope. The Bull turned on me!

D: He betrays you regardless?!
I played through Trespasser with my Nightmare file which basically had all the 'bad' choices in the game, including dead Chargers so Bull did turn on me. I...didn't know he'd do it regardless! *picks up 'good' playthrough to witness this* Thanks guys!

So yeah. I love Krem and the Chargers. But I was always nutral on the Iron Bull. Knowing that Bull betrays you however makes me not like him. Wish I could save the Chargers and still off him.
I guess you don't like Zev, Leliana, Oghren, Fenris, Merrill, Anders, Isabela either? Seeing as they can all betray you if you make certain choices?
I mean the guy flat out says he's a qunari spy. He told you who he worked for. If you don't remove his loyalty to them yeah he's gonna do his job?

Only if you don't do his personal quest. If you do that and save the Chargers, he's loyal.

Bull doesn't betray you regardless. He betrays you if you didn't get his "what do I do without the Qun" scene pretty much. And since that conversation is locked to high approval and saving the chargers some people miss it.
But Bull betrayal isn't a certainty. He's quite loyal in mine.

Bull will not betray you if you save the Chargers. Why? Because he is now Tal-Vashoth. If you do not do his personal quest or let the Chargers die, you are sending him back to the Qun as the spy he is, and most likely they had him re-educated. Cole says he felt nothing meaning he was a mindless, emotionless machine when he betrayed you.
It's not that saving the Chargers makes him more loyal, it's that saving the Chargers means you get him out of the Qun, so he is free to be himself and think for himself.

Yes, I am quite sure that was at least an intended side-effect, yes. Gatt mentions Bull was being treated with suspicion already for likely having "gone native" too much.

Pretty much this. Bull is loyal to who he is supposed to be loyal to depending on what you did in his personal quest.

It's fair for the Qunari to angle to get the Chargers killed. I accepted the mission from Bull in the hopes I could f*ck over the Qunari at some point.
Because f*ck the Qunari.

Only if you don't do his personal quest. Bull did not betray me in my Trespasser play through, but I did his personal quest and saved the chargers. So if you did his quest and saved the chargers he will not turn on you.

Zevran and Leliana and Oghren and Fenris and Merrill and Anders, etc. will all try to kill you given the right circumstances. Not really fair to single Bull out.

It IS fair to single Bull out because they don't work the same way.
Zevran basically has to be convinced not to kill you by raising his approval. That means he technically still was planning to do it.
Leliana and Bull are different. They originally had no such desire, but the player creates that situation.

I don't see it that way. Zevran is relying on you to protect him from the Crows - if you treat him badly or never speak to him (meaning you don't earn his trust), he has absolutely no reason to think the Warden is a safer bet than just attempting to return to his old life, at the mercy of his former employers.
The player creates that situation. It's just a bit more passive than defiling the Ashes or sacrificing the Chargers.

Yeah I was amused and disgusted when my neutral PC suddenly got a dagger in the back. I mean she saw it coming because assassin but still she had done her side of the bargain to a T. So much for being a man of his word. But she hadn't swayed his loyalty so she got what she earned *shrug*

He does admit that he initially took the job because he thought it would get him killed.

True. XD I guess I should've lessened his suicidal tendencies. Shame shame.
