Hey guys,
i just got the game few days ago and i'm having a lot of trouble:

in past two games i was able to play and win everything (at Nightmare of course) with a "standard"  party setup, i mean with tank+healer+2xdps, however now i die to almost every 4+ enemy group (specially those with 2xdamn lesser terror demon) and i have not idea what's wrong.
I see and understand very well the  new Guard, Barrier and drink-potion mechanics (i'm running a Support mage with Barrier -Solas- instead of Healer), problem is my Tank doesn't hold aggro for more than few secs after using the taunt-skills (already got War Cry+Challenge+Charging Bull, however isn't enough lol), so my party is aggro-ing everything and die, i'm always the last survivor till the death some mins later :P

That's a real pity because with Guard+Barrier+Potion i can handle a lot of damage and almost never die! (got also all guard skills: Charg.Bull, Unt.Defense,Unbowed,ShieldWall, etc)

Now perhaps trying to understand what i'm doing wrong is useless, just tell me some tips on how i should play this game would be easier for you :)

Thanks!

PS. i'm playing with Hard difficulty, Friendly Fire ON, tank+Solas+IronBull+Varric, level 9-10, i die to every group enemy lvl 9+, allied with Templars, next quest: close the rifte at Haven.

Have not tried FF (Good luck!), but setting defensive abilities to Preferred in Tactics helps (eg; Challenge, War Cry, Shield Wall, Barrier, Fade Step on level terrain, Evasion, Stealth, etc).

Personally do not look at threat mechanics much; take the Passives for the bonuses.

Hmm do you believe i should switch FF off? i always played with ON in DA:O and DA2 and wasnt hard..
Btw i use the main tank and Barrier + Fade Step already are setted to Preferred, also i usually use the Tactical Cam to manage everything by myself, but still i can't hold aggro and companions die :P

Do i need any specific skill maybe? Don't know what are the best ones yet, i'm trying everything a bit

The friendly fire is poorly implemented in this game as compared to the last two.  That's my opinion.  I support this by saying that the tactics have been dumbed down to kindergarten levels.  Had they been more complex, you could state to have people stay ranged, etc.

Try the game without friendly fire on.  There are better options for enabling a harder game.  If you have access to trials (might be part of the trespasser DLC), set on Even Ground and Walk Softly.  Those two there will give you a similar vibe as far as complexity as the last game, with the small concession tactics are dumbed down.

Turn FF off for your first playthrough. That's the easiest thing to do. Learn how various skills work together, not to mention the tactics of enemies and bosses, then try FF on a second PT.

Just a side comment: the concepts of "tank", "support", and "healer" are very old school. They don't really fit in DAI. Every class has a way to attract or evade aggro. Every class deals damage. Every class can do some kind of healing, albeit indirectly.

For example, in addition to War Cry, you also need some crowd control skills. Gone are the days of a single tank aggroing everything on the battlefield. Subgroups or individuals of the enemy will reposition themselves on the battlefield, outside of the influence of War Cry (which has a fairly small radius to begin with). Enemy archers and Terrors are particularly good at this. That's where skills like Chain Lightning, KO Powder, Grappling Chain, Wall of (element), etc. come in. Rift Mage has the best assortment of CC skills, so run with Solas everywhere for your first PT.

Evasion is also important, at least for low to mid level. Every character should have some kind of "Oh Sh*t" button to get out of a bad melee situation.

Finally, you need to spend a significant amount of time crafting gear. If you aren't doing some min/maxing of mats to gear, you're going to get your a$$ handed to you. I should know, I'm intentionally doing a no-crafting NM run in order to up the challenge of the game.  This is important with FF off, but with FF on it is vital.

This is very useful and interesting, thank you very much!

Yep, it's a shame tactics are downgraded compared to DA:O and DA2, also companion AI looks bad...i'm going to switch off FF and give a try!

Regard crowd control, to be honest i have no CC skills lol, apart the Winter Grasp from solas which i don't use because was damaging and freezing my allies :P are CC skills so important?
How exactly can Wall of (element) or Chain Lightning help me in bad situations?

Wall of Ice helps with CC as it blocks enemies (and attacks) from getting to you and your allies. It's upgrade, whcih I haven't used yet, can very nicely encircle an enemy that is causing some issues.

Wall of Fire causes panic as they burn, which is good for getting the enemy to leave that area via running away lol

Not sure about Chain Lightning... I don't usually spec for the Lightning Tree.....

CC is very important in this game though

Chain Lightning has a good shock effect when there is more than one target. If going Storm tier, I recommend all the abilities except Lightning Bolt (Static Cage is better) and the Energy Barrage upgrade, IMO.

Also be aware of how combination work:

Now I play w/o Floating Text, so I do not know how effective each of these are, but do know that my Knight Enchanter can set up some great combos using Static Cage and Fade Cloak, while delivering a great punch using Energy Barrage and Spirit Blade. Just look for effect indicators, and try and follow through when possible.

While the above posters offer good advice, I'll provide a counterpoint. I'm on my first playthrough of the game, with nightmare/friendly fire turned on, and enjoy the difficulty it adds.

I think you can solve your aggro issues by changing how you engage instead. What works for me is to send the warrior in first while the rest of the party is on hold position, this draws initial aggro onto your warrior. Then by focus firing your damage via the "attack my target" hotkey, you can make sure that your warrior needs to worry about less targets at a time.

Reasoning is that since you're currently playing with FF on, you're probably not using too many AOE abilities which would cause aggro issues, and is probably more along the lines of your warrior trying to play taunt-a-mole because each party member is attacking a different target.

If you are using AOE abilities, try to frontload some of the aoe damage after your warrior's initial pull, then try to gather them up for an AOE taunt. This will give your warrior a decent threat lead on the aggro table.

Well I thought Chain Lighting applies the Paralyzed status, but that doesn't appear to be true. It applies Shocked, which is good in its own way, but not for CC. I guess I got mixed up with the combo for Paralyzed, which causes Discharge (eletricity damage).
