This is exactly why I'm a bit nervous about ME:A.

Ditto.

I have to say no.   Unlike many here, my first introduction to the series was with ME2.   I picked it up on a whim since it was on a mega sale and nothing else appealed to me for my long weekend off.    So I thought I would give it a try.   Needless to say I loved it and was hooked, so much so that about halfway through, I decided I had to start from the beginning and downloaded the original ME...   It was even better.

So despite my introduction to the series on ME2, I still found ME a better overall game.    Too many of the game mechanics were stripped out of ME2, and the controls in ME2 were the horrendous sort of thing I prepared myself for in buying a console port game.   Yes... you have to take cover before you can vault over something.   Didn't get that impression in the first ME.

They all has their charms and it is tough to compare as they had different goals.  I still like ME1 the best, perhaps nostalgia is part of it but they hit it out of the park to start the series.  I really liked ME2 a lot as well.  ME3 had some tremendous parts to imo totally earned the scorn it received as well.

I didn't play ME1 until after ME2 & 3, and I have to say I prefer the sequels. I like the characters better - except for Wrex, I like the gameplay better. And ME3 was able to elicit a greater emotional response from me than almost any game I've ever played.

I'll give ME1 this; it has the best villain, hands down, in Saren.

I like Mass Effect 3 more than Mass Effect 1, but I like Mass Effect 1 more than Mass Effect 2.

I find the sequels lacking in every way compared to ME 1 even the shooting that was now prolonged with waves so no I find ME 1 far superior to ME2/3 in every way.

I remember when I first played Mass Effect 1. I didn't like it. But I continued playing, and by the end - after watching humanity selflessly sacrifice for the counsil, and joker being a badass with the Normandy agains Sovereign - the credits rolled, and I though: "this is the best game ever." So clearly it has a place in my heart. The entire franchise does. Sovereign reveal - classic! (only to be diminished by Mass Effect 3 ending). And I'll love it forever.

All that said, Mass Effect 2 is my absolute favorite. Yes it diminished the RPG elements, but, honestly, for the betterment of the game. The shooter gameplay was great - endlessly above the incredibly clunky ME1 gameplay. I love the cast of characters. I hated the human reaper, but at least the journey was fantastic. And I'll love it forever.

Mass Effect 3, perhaps arguably, perfected the combat, but as far as improvements go... that's about it. Internal crew interaction was great, as well, sure, but interacting with the crew got gutted along with dialogue options. That was one the many things that annoyed me, but it was alright, the gameplay was great, and the story kept me going. I also liked the feel of war, especially when you got back to Earth. Side missions where shyte, though, and I expected so much more from the whole asset thing - I was like: "Oh man, are we gonna have to use those assets wisely when we truly go to war?!" But no. I will also give ME3 the plus of having a lot of touching moments - more than the previous two. And then the ending happened... Let's not talk about the ending.... Well one thing: Extended Cut made what it was better; but you can polish a turd all you want, it won't become Bono.

Ahem. So yeah Mass Effect 2 is my favorite.

Mass Effect 3 is my definite favourite. I absolutely dreaded the combat in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, which was greatly improved in Mass Effect 3. I hated it so much that I felt it was more of a hassle to use weapons than it was helpful. Mass Effect only had a couple missions I enjoyed, which was Virmire and the final mission with Saren. The rest were very tedious.

Mass Effect 2 was decent enough, but I couldn't have Wrex </3 and it had a weak story-line but introduced some good new characters. Mass Effect 3 had the most emotional affect on me.

I was also turned off by the amount of interaction you could have with your team on the ship, or the lack thereof, in fact. That's what Mass Effect 3 lacked for me, but the Citadel DLC made up for it, I think.

2 and 3 were much, much better from a gameplay perspective. ME1 had very clunky combat, poor levels and environments, and the tedious Mako.

ME1 had the best story and atmosphere. In ME:A they should try and get that atmosphere back.

ME3 had the best game play, and ME2 developed existing and, some new characters, quite well.

I don't have an order of which one I like the best, they all had their faults. ME1 could feel boring in places, ME2 had a weak story and we all know ME3's weaknesses.

Hopefully the devs know the strengths and weaknesses of the previous games, and learn from them while creating ME:A.

I liked ME2's narrative better than ME3, it certainly didn't have the best story but as a narrative package as a whole, I vastly prefer it over 1 and 3.

Same goes for gameplay, biotics wasn't nearly as overpowered and it had the most even difficulty curve out of the bunch without turning into a joke like ME3, and ME1 after 15-20 levels or so. The thing 1 did have over the first was more elaborate rpg elements though.

With that in mind, id probably rate it as 2>3>1

What I'll say about ME3 is that it had, in my opinion, both the highest highs and the lowest lows in the trilogy. Me, personally I just think the highs outweigh the lows.

ME1 had the best atmosphere and felt the most expansive and immersive.  It's probably my favorite, but it's flawed.

Each game had something it did best.  ME2 had the best characters and style.  ME3 had the best gameplay.  ME1 had the best atmosphere, immersion and story.

Probably my favorite moment in the games was at the beginning of ME2.  At that moment I still had the memory of ME1's body of work, but I felt so engaged with the improvements to the actual gameplay.

Unfortunately as the games went on, they got away from the deliciously stark corporate feel of ME1 and ventured towards generic military shooter, and I think a lot of the charm was lost.  Because of that, I'll say that ME1 was my favorite.  But I recognize there are many things that ME2 and ME3 did that were vastly superior to ME1.

Overall, ME1 is the best in the series for me.  Driving the clunky Mako on unexplored worlds, wondering to myself "heh, wouldn't think make a great planet to set up a colony?" Going to uncharted worlds and finding prothean artificats [remember those giant mysterious orbs?], coming across merc hideouts.  Finding Matriarch writings, when exploring...  Hearing the galaxy map for the first time.  Going LUNA and seeing Earth in the backgroup, and fighting the rogue VI.  Being creeped out by the Thorian.  Being in love with the beauty of the Asari.  Hating Cerberus (in ME1, but loved them in ME2).  Fighting the Thresher Maw for the first time... The battle of the Citadel.

Man, ME1 to me just brings back so many feels *tears.* Despite it's boring gameplay, it's story remains the best in series.. I did not experience anything like that in ME2 and ME3.

We didn't have much of a choice, there, did we?

Yeah, we were forced to work with Cerberus. But in ME2, they weren't the big bad wolf that in ME1 everyone made them out to be.

they were never big. But I'm disappointed they didn't turn out to be the wolves that everyone in ME1 made them out to be.

Bioware shouldn't have needlessly introduced the Collectors. They should've fully realized Cerberus as the rogue black op bogeymen they were said to be.

Instead they made them have sympathetic qualities and made us become part of their team.

I've wonder this too, imagine if Cerberus was the type of organization in ME1 and ME2 that they were in ME3.  In ME3 they were... CRAZY! Their enemy types were boring. But it would have been fun to fight that type of Cerberus agents in ME1 and be a part of that type of organization in ME2.

Regardless, I still love Cerberus. #HumanityFirst

I personally loved the manner in which Cerb was portrayed in Mass Effect 2. It was a grey and complex situation that really made you put some thought into the intentions and goals of that corporation.

In Mass Effect 3 they were just ''Evil Corporation''...like, the nonsensical, stupid evil,
