I don't know the exact mechanism, but I think it effectively works as if there was no commitment of any kind. Basically, just pursue another romance if you wish and then that is that. :)

No commitment? thats why the devs talk about cheating and your room is supposed to have photo of you me1 li? a photo which becomes placed facedown if you romance someone new...

really would like to know if there is an option to break up :P

I think it becomes a bigger thing in ME3, ME1 is the romance ME2 is the affair and ME3 is the confrontation where one is kept and the other storms off into the sunset.

Thats what I think anyway. I think the devs said cheating will infact have a negative impact on ME3.

You asked how, thats why I said if you want to pursue another romance it is EFFECTIVELY like it was non-commital. I never said there wouldn't be repurcussions.

After all, you know what they say: Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

If you are asking if the begining of the game offers you some chance to break up before ME2 really starts up, then NO.

you know the devs said that something like 90% of people would cheat(at least that's what they thought) maybe they should have had a interesting non garrus fangirl(or boi) LI.  None that were presented made me want to leave my Mass Effect 1 LI

There is no way to break up.

If you romanced someone in the first, and want to start a new one, you HAVE TO CHEAT.

Which is why I've started a new game with my 60 paragon soldier in ME1 where I won't be taking a romance. I can hold off in the first knowing Tali will soon be mine. ;)

And Chris mentioned there's repercussions for cheating. Not really a big effect in ME2 (though they do have the photo thing). But in ME3, it's apparently going to bite you in the ass.

I think they figure 90% of people would cheat for a couple of reasons. One, the romances in ME1 were terrible. Lame characters.

And a lot of people didn't consider new relationships in later games. Or the fact that you can't start one without cheating.

And the new romances are a lot better than the first ones, so naturally people would want to give them a go.

Some people are replaying the original to avoid or change their romance options... others don't care and are just going to take the hit in ME3.

As much as it's a can of worms, I have to agree. Garrus is the only one I'm interested in persuing on my FemShep.

If I recall correctly, the devs didn't put any ME1 romance in part 2 thanks to the "suicide mission" aspect of things. Something about not wanting Liara/Ashley/Kaidan dying off in the sequel since they have parts in the third act of the trilogy.

It works out okay since my Shepard sent Ashley to her death on Virmire and told Liara to sit the hell down when it came to the romance stuff. I have a galaxy to save, masturbation will do just fine.

You know what would be a real kick in the teeth for a Shepard that romanced Ashley or Kaidan and cheated on them in ME2?

Finding out in ME3 that they got promoted to Spectre status and is now hunting your ass.

+1

On topic, I really wanted there to be, even moreso after encountering Liara again. Unfortunately, the option just doesn't seem to be there.

Without being able to post spoilers in here let me just say that Yes, you can "break up with your ME 1 romance". And it happens before you get a chance to romance someone from the ME2 crew.

I had a picture of Ashley on my desk, but it was face down after I had sex with Jack.

OK so the question is was the "romance" with Liara a kinda short lived, once only experience? Do Asari even couple or get jealous? Part of me curious as to whether having a romance in ME2 will actually be considered cheating on Liara if that is who you romanced in ME1. Am I really gonna have to play it twice so I have a save file of monogamy and one for bow-chica-wha-wha in anticipation of ME3?
