Um, take more damage from front?

So I was running some perilous to get my avvar that last bit up to 20, and feeling I got enough xp I started to let the mobs (one venatori brute, one footman, one archer) kill me. Thinking to let them get the flanking bonus I turn my back on em, and the brute takes a mighty swing and...hits me for 1. Now I'm at 50 con (and wearing drakescale), so there is no way it should be 1. I turn forward and he hits me for a more normal amount, about 150 give or take. 

 

Ideas as to what is causing this? I'm thinking bear mauls the wolves has something going on with it again.

I've pretty well given up trying to figure out anything and everything related to damage in this game both from and to the player.  I have no idea what abilities to take, what weapons to use what rings to wear, some work some don;t some work and get fixed some that worked suddenly don't.  One game I'll play a class and do really well, the very next game I'll play the same class and get rump kicked.

Lovely ideas, but nope.

 

Horn of Valor currently doesnt proc on Hakkon's Greatsword (nor could 15% armor produce 150 --> 1 unless 1000 armor)

 

Chilled defense is % DR, and no where near 99.5

Yeah, didn't have any of those as I didn't hit anything in the zone (and afked a bit switching music), just went up and stood there as they smacked me.

The damage in this game makes no sense. Some classes are able to solo an entire group of enemies on nightmare, while others barely have a chance one on one.

You know how they changed Unbowed to Livid?   They have also changed Bear Mauls the Wolves but forgot to update the name.   It is now Bear Rumps the Wolves. :P

Hm, this sounds interesting. I'll test it out once I get bear mauls the wolves again.

The formula for damage dealt by enemy NPCs against party members is:

final_damage = (base_damage * rand(0.95 to 1.05) - armor * armor_multiplier * (1 - armor_penetration))
* (ability_multiplier + attack_bonus + flanking_bonus + level_bonus + difficulty_bonus + rank_bonus)
* (1 - magic_resistance)
* (1 - min(defense + front_defense, 0.8))

 

You don't need 1000 armor. The enemies have all kinds of multipliers that could turn even a tiny bundle of dmg into 150.

I also think that using Horn of Valor on the Templar I have seen such damage differences, but it's been a while since I checked on perilous. 

 

The other options where less likely but they might have mattered.

I did some very brief testing, letting a footman hit me from a distance and then up close on back and front. Nothing changed, but I did only let him hit me 3 times in the front and back, so I can't really call that through testing. Nonetheless I don't believe this is the cause, but it was a good idea anyhow.

I sent Luke a PM about this bug shortly after the patch hit, but since it's out in the open now...

 

"Bear Mauls the Wolves" and "Mind Over Matter" currently make you take one damage from all melee attacks from the rear.  Yes, all of them.  A Red Templar Shadow can jump you on Nightmare and you'll just be hit for 1 repeatedly.

 

It's a bit ridiculous;  you can't really say, "Oh, I'll just avoid getting that passive to avoid exploiting" since it's on the way to critical skills for many classes.

 

Make sure you ...don't turn your back to the enemy purposefully when rezzing an ally... or something?  Bleh.

been noticing for a while now that the damage you take can vary from match to match. Not too long ago I took a lv1 Archer into perilous and was able to take a hell of a lot of damage and it not make much difference, hit lv11, same difficulty, same faction (RT's), but I could only take 2 hits from a regular footsoldier before I was doing an emergency floor inspection.

The dragon armors for some classes might have broken front armour rating just like the Katari once had.

 

I guess I will have to test it..... sometime.
