But projecting current reality into the future isn't all that realistic either. A few centuries ago our current sexual morality would have appeared unworkable, as indeed it would be without highly-effective birth control and moderately-effective STD control.

The biological and evolutionary need to reproduce will never NOT be the norm (and thus the presence of heterosexual material) will never NOT be the norm. That's one of the most basic and fundamental things in human existence.

Yes, and basic needs like eating and sleeping are fundamental things in human existence, but everything (including basic things) has a time and place, and glaring fanservice are more often than not out of place (like the diving camera shot into dying Benezia's boobs).

Nobody here complained about Quizzy and Sera being naked in bed, because this is at the right time and place, Miranda's buttshots however comes at a supposedly serious time in a very unfriendly place,

An assertion, not a fact. There are just as many (actually more) people who don't say anything about it, either because they support it or they don't care. Because as it turns out, not everybody is a homophobe. Most people actually are not.

 
How many time have I save posts asking for "a good reason" for X character to be Y, most often than not a character that doesn't represent the norm needs a reason for not being the norm.
Now the scale of that is moot, but those things are being asked regulary.

I consider "pandering" when it's out of place and time, like a buttshot of Miranda would be ok as part of a romance scene but certainly not in the middle of an important and emotionally loaded mission...when I start to think "I'm not here for this", the line has been crossed.
