I'm trying to remember if party approval, particularly who drinks from The Well of Sorrows, depends on the companion being present.  Some decisions result in approval loss or gain whether or not the companion is in the active party, but I can't remember how it works in the Temple.

I'm planning a "perfect" walkthrough before delving into the "Trespasser" DLC, and the answer to this question will affect who I bring on this mission.  Sorry to be maniacal, but PLEASE NO "TRESPASSER" SPOILERS.

Cheers!

No approval gain-loss for those who aren't present at Mythal's Temple - not in my three or four walkthroughs.

(I should caution you, however, that if you want to finish the game and all the DLCs with perfect approval score (no disapproval whatsoever from anyone), you will fail, as I have).

Some will have an dis/approval for completing the trials  regardless of whether they're present. I think it's Cassandra, Iron Bull and Solas. I also think that Solas (and Cole?) give disapproval for refusing to ally with the sentinel elves.

As far as I remember, companions always give dis/approval on the major choice of each quest, regardless of whether they're present. So: what you do with the mages/templars, the Wardens, the ruler of Orlais, and who drinks from the Well.

It's possible to end up friends with everyone though (I did that on my favourite playthrough), so I wish you luck!

The mage/templar decision you can avoid getting some of the dis/approval with some of the characters if you avoid recruiting them until after you've made the decision.

The easiest way for me to get along with Vivienne in my main playthrough is to avoid recruiting her till I get to Skyhold.

Main decisions in the game will elicit approval/disapproval from companions even if they are not present.   It is sometimes difficult to tell because if a companion is already on maximum approval then the game will not display the reaction because effectively it hasn't changed.   However, if you take the opposite choice then you will see disapproval.

In the Well of Sorrows you will see the approval/disapproval show for characters not present.  For example, I'm pretty sure Iron Bull disapproved of me doing the maze puzzles to gain entry even though he wasn't in my party.    Presumably if you just jump down and follow Cory's lackeys then he would show approval (although I have never done this so I can't say for sure).  Really the only way to discover what is best for your walkthrough is to save,  make the decision and watch the reaction display.     If you really can't live with the result, then reload and do the opposite.

Not everyone will have a strong opinion about things though.   So drinking from the Well or not may not elicit a reaction from them.    I seem to recall that Sera did not show up as having strong feelings when I was in the Temple and she wasn't with me, but she sure made her feelings clear if I drank from the Well when we got back to Skyhold.

Should also be mentioned that "perfect" approval scores don't actually matter for anything, unless you're really OCD about min/maxing numbers for personal fulfillment. The only thing the Keep tracks and sends forward to future games regarding approval is whether you were friends with someone or not - the exact number of approval points you had with each of the companions is irrelevant.
