I have been thinking about Grand Enchanter Fiona and her interest in Alistair. I have reasons to believe that Alistair is her son. Before I move on, keep in mind that my experience with the series is pieced together with information from the games. So if Alistair's mother is revealed in another kind of media, I'm obviously not aware of it. I am also unaware of anyone else who also proposed this crazy theory.
 
My suspicion first arose when Fiona asked about Alistair. She seemed a little shy to ask about him. And if you think about it: What reason does a Grand Enchanter have to care about a king, if any of them at all? This made me curious so I started digging. I thought maybe BioWare left clues for me to follow. I used those clues to piece together adjacent theories backed up by logic and reason.
 
First Theory A maid's untimely demise

In DAO, we learn that Alistair's mother was a maid and that she died during childbirth. Before reasserting that argument, think of what would be more scandalous for a king the fact they slept with a maid or the fact they slept with an elf? Considering how most of human society treats elves with disdain and they are, in general, second class citizens, living in alienages, there is no doubt that sleeping with an elf is more scandalous. If Alistair was led to believe that her mother died at childbirth, he would have no reason to find her.

 

Second Theory The first of her kind

In DAO, Loghain mentions to a female city elf Warden that the first Warden he saw, after Calenhad allowed them to return to Ferelden, was a woman. I am not sure if he mentioned whether she was a warrior but let's shelf that for now. And instead focus on how she lost what made her a Warden. It is not known if a Grey Warden is able to concieve let alone successfully birth a healthy child or even that they should be able to. What we know is that Fiona at one point was a Warden and then she was not. If you know what makes a Grey Warden, then you know that it is the blood of the archdemon that courses within their veins that make them Wardens. And the only weapon of hope against an Archdemon. Take that away and they are no longer Warden but ordinary people. So how come that Fiona lost what made her a Warden? I believe that losing blood during childbirth in a sense expunged the tainted blood from her body. I am not sure if you lose a lot of blood, you lose what makes you a Warden. But chances are if did lose too much blood, you are dead, anyhow. This is neither explained nor shed light upon in the games. Though even I admit that it is quite a stretch.

 

And if you'll recall, she says "His father such high hopes for him." First of all, how did know his father? And second, how close were they to reveal what is essentially a secret of the government?

 

Third Theory The cloak and dagger

I can hear you saying that in DAO Alistair's "sister" affirms that their mother did die at childbirth. But is it true? You'll remember when I said it's scandalous for a human king to be literally in bed with an elf. I believe it's in Fiona's interest to ask a friend or an acquaintance to make him believe that she died. Because first of all, she was a Warden at the time and probably thought that she doesn't have much a future to provide for him. So for his sake, she chose to deceive him. Make him think her mother really is dead and dissuade him from chasing other family members. But when she lost what made her a Warden, why wouldn't she contact him? Well, take yourself for instance that you made a life for yourself, and your "dead" mother crawls out of the grave and tries insert herself into your life. It's probably because she believed it would be foolhardy to go after him after a long time and decided to let him live in peace.

 

I will admit everything I presented here is completely fallible and arguable. This is the reason I dubbed it "Stretch Theory". But it simply seem strange for me that an Orlesian Grand Enchanter, and an elf at that, would care about a king. So what do you think about this? Am I completely in over my head and see connection that aren't there (for any number of reasons)? Or do you think I am onto something?

This confirmed a while ago, that Alistair is Fiona's son. He is not always the King though, and could be dead or a Warden.

Good job working it out by yourself, anyway. Particularly without the books.

(Though it wasn't pregnancy that made her not a warden. It was stopping being a warden that allowed her to get pregnant. Though if it was the other way around, that's got to be awkward for the Hero of Fereldan when they discover the Calling cure.)
