DA4 set in tevinter needs a magic system worthy of the setting. DAI really downgraded and chopped up the 4 magic schools and DA2 reduced them as well but maybe DA4 can bring back the four schools of magic while giving mages a more unique approach to a two style class system warriors and rogues have. As we know warriors are broken down into shield users or two handed weapon users while both can play a tank or damage role the nature of the weapons favor certain roles more then others. Now mages don't have a choice for weapons to determine a style but spell types. What I would like to see is mages being broken into two types but like rogues and warriors can still pick up talents of the other style. The Mage should be split into Energy or Matter Mages. Supported by lore each of the 4 magic schools belong in two groups Primal and Spirit are Energy and Creation and Entropy are Matter.

Energy Mages are more suited for the battlemage dps role. Having skill trees similar to what we see in DAI. But with more light support skills.

Primal Tree will feature the 4 elements Fire Ice Electric and Earth. These act as the main damage side of the mage. With return of big aoe spells like earthquake and fire storm. Combo set ups for big party damage would also be a strength of this mage.

Spirit Tree will provide the light party support giving barriers when needed as well as giving anti magic skills making a Energy Magic possible to be builded towards anti magic. Mana clash Mana brust and dispel along with Mana drain will make that possible. And moves like crushing prison still allow Energy Mages to provide that heavy damage.

Matter Mages while still can go the damage road could be similar to shield warriors were they are best at feeling a certain role. These mages are the support mages and control the battlefield with hexs and glyphs. These mages could take a more tactic approach setting up glyphs at certain locations to either buff he party or debuff the enemy. Creation tree would help give the party buffs and heals. While Entropy tree hexs enemies to make then weaker to whatever strengths your party have. Death cloud could be one of many aoe skills. Matter Mages would have more aoe skills since they don't hit as hard but moves like haste or placing slow glyphs for enemies allows mages to take a more thoughtful approach when it comes to magic.

Matter Mages could also be book users instead of staves that give spells a more aoe fill while staves are more direct and focuses mages magic favoring energy Mages to use.

Of course all mages using staves won't be a issue but this is just a new way to make mages in dragon age unique and make mage builds easy for new people and advance for old folks. That way we don't have to dumb down the magic schools and specializations won't have to pick up the slack from other schools but in fact add specialized spells to add a new dynamic to the mage. Almost like a outside school allowing for more freedom in builds. I mainly would like support controller mages back.

It would be a shame if they didn't bring blood magic back in some capacity, especially if we're in Tevinter.

Not just bringing it back but making the specialization fill unique. Necromancer never felt like a true Necromancer because it included to many spells from the basic schools of magic. And with the chantry in tevinter I based Matter Mages off of Magic the Black Divine would favor to use vs Energy mages that a Achron would likely fit. Basically with mages allowed in the chantry matter Mages would feel like more a cleric type role a mage would play while energy focuses on the raw power of Magic. then specializations could focus on actually being whatever they are trying to sell.
