Thoughts on Trespasser:
The overall story was a nice close to dragon age inquisition. The environments are brilliant and some of the party conversations were nice. It is the lead into future stories that worries me.
Expectations:
So a small disappointment with the story. This right here is a personal preference and I understand that they did not necessarily take a route like this. Them not making the Creators spirits is only slightly disappointing and does not kill Fe’harel for me. I am very disappointed they moved away from making Fen’harel more complicated. I like characters that are so powerful and so selfless that they are willing to destroy everything they know and love in order to let innocents live. This is what the Dread Wolf represented to me for a while. The Creators and Old gods warred with the People caught in the middle. Fen’harel saw this and sacrificed everything; his kin, his friends, the world, everything. He also continued living with his actions carrying his prison with him. This is the ultimate sacrifice to me. Screw dying for the people you love. I just think they is a greater sacrifice, like when the doctor destroyed all of Galifrey( I know he didn’t, but he thinks he did) in order to allow the innocents of the universe to live. Fen’harel was one that went on living knowing he would always be alone, knowing he betrayed everyone who loved him, and being reviled by the people he saved. I thought this was about to lead to an amazing story where we would fully understand what he did. Instead he is just another normal elf who sacrificed his connection with the fade and that is it really. He did not seem to care for the enuvaris so working against them was not any tough moral question. Mythal was it for him really. The only tough moral quandary he had was in creating the veil. He is only alone because he decided to sleep instead of aiding his people. There is also no chance of him learning that even though he is a greater spirit of some sort does not mean that mortals can’t be friends or family. Basically I was very disappointed to find his story was a rather basic rebellion story rather than a tough moral exploration.
Repetition:
This happens to be a problem overall with various gaming companies and is not just a bioware issue. Characters do not grow or learn and things get repeated within universe ad nauseum. Period. Here we have Cory and now Fen’harel doing the exact same thing. Solas has not learned while he directly watched and saw what Cory has done. The only difference between the two is Cory wishes to be a God while Solas refused to be considered a God. That is not much of a difference when it comes to their actions. Not only that Fen’harel’s story is disgustingly similar to Andraste. I say disgustingly because it is not providing any variation within the universe. There is no reason for them to have the same story. They say history repeats, but it does not repeat this heavy-handedly. Magic will always stand against non-magic there is no integration, no complexity to the conflict. We have had two games with this theme as well as the Tevinter story and the Qunari society. We also have the Enuvaris are the exact same thing as the Tevinter Imperium. So now we are hearing the same story twice just substitute words. Telling the same story is not a bad thing at times as long as we bring something new to the table, whether it be a new way of explaining the situation or a new view. These stories are just too similar and do not seem to explain or bring anything new to the table. Solas is tearing down the veil to restore the Elvhan people just as Cory was tearing down the veil to restore Tevinter of old.
Solas’s Character:
Alright here is a massive problem I have with the story. Solas is the wise character who, even written in the mechanics of the game, likes it when you grow and learn. He does not think rashly, nor is he the type to forget things that he learned. It seems like all of that went out the window with the path they are taking. You may say well he thinks he is going to do it better, but then he is not remembering the history of everything that has happened with mortals. He is not remembering any of his history. I just want a consistent character. Solas could easily be a villain, but only a villain in the sense that he represents change. If he became a character that led the elves in a new direction it would be consistent. If he led a wave to free the elves from the Qun, Tevinter and the Alienages then he could easily be a villain in a game, just one that we would often chose to win. This ties into the mistakes I think they made with his backstory. He needs to be a lot more friendly with the False Gods so he could have a great reason to tear down the veil. As it stands he has no reason to do that, everything could be done by leading the elves. You may also say that “The Dalish rejected him”. He did say they would not listen, but at the end of Trespasser it says elves are leaving places in score. So it seems he will have an elvish army for future games.
TL:DR All in all one DLC really disappointed me with how they handled Solas/Fen’harel.
