more so lack of game choice then actual entertainment at this point lol. But with bioware games i can go through numerous times just to see all the different options of dialogue.I cant even imagine how could you play any game actual 11 times, not to mention on nightmare. Play as a rogue archer. Poison + Stealth + Leaping Shot = Profit . Rinse and repeat until you get to Skyhold. After that, you can pretty much do whatever you want because the game gets progressively easier once you get to pick your specialization. I recommend Assassin for insane burst damage.
Or you can do it the boring way and be a Knight Enchanter. Basically, just spam Spirit blade and Barrier, but most of the fight will take like 10 mins compared to assassin which will take less than a minute.

The obvious first question would be how much of a challenge are you looking for?
Easy solo: Knight Enchanter
Semi-easy solo: Assassin
Difficult solo: Reaver (Recommend S&S)
Very difficult solo: Necromancer/Rift Mage (You'll probably need Blackwall as tank assistance for some fights)
Just about everything else falls somewhere in the middle.

Game gets stupid hard to solo when elites show up. Basically forces you to use the golden nug.
And once you decided to use the schematics from the golden nug, a lot of the challenge disappears.
I've done DW rogue and mage, the former I recently did to see how difficult the trials made it. I think I caved on the golden nug right before in hushed whispers.
Strategy is stealth, attack, immediately go back into stealth through flank attack or stealth. Don't do envy demon as melee.
I only did this until cory. Doing the descent and hakkon dlc seemed like it would cause me to go bald from all the hair pulling.

I soloed the entire game on Nightmare without trials as a warrior, unspecialized. It gets progressively easier until you reach the deeper ends of the game, in the DLCs, where not having a specialization means that fights are going to be very, very long regardless of how aggressively you play, so I was sort of stuck in a very defensive playstyle.
I'm now in a Nightmare Friendly Fire All Trials Solo Warrior playthrough. I just completed Trials of the Fools, reached Skyhold at level 5. You need to be of an open mind to be able to do it. There's no "one size fits all" strategy to deal with everything; I need to constantly question my build, gear and playstyle, even with the Golden Nug.
I might publish videos of it.
Here are the builds I used:
- prologue as two-handed warrior:
- level 1: war cry, mighty blow.
- level 2: war cry, mighty blow, block and slash
- crossroads clean-up as two-handed warrior, using Dancing Axe (crafted axe that replaces autoattack with whirlwind), mundane questing
- level 3: grappling chain, give them the boot, hamstring, combat roll
- power farming, rift closing, main questing as sword and shield
- level 4: grappling chain, give them the boot, hamstring, combat roll, coming through
- Champions of the Just as sword and shield, with 80 spirit resistance
- level 4: grappling chain, hamstring, combat roll, warcry, charging bull
- level 5: grappling chain, hamstring, combat roll, coming through, warcry, charging bull
- In your heart shall burn as sword and shield, with ~50 fire resistance
- level 5: grappling chain, give them the boot, hamstring, combat roll, warcry, charging bull
... and now I can level up and start gearing up properly. Hopefully I will see less death screens ![]()

All trials except take it slow and rub some dirt in it. I dont even know where to start. I've went through the game around 13 times( 11 on nightmare) and some pointers would be great. Class, strats for certain fights, abilities, gear, etc.
Here's my suggestions since I finished two NIGHTMARE play throughs and am working on a third and am doing well:
- Make custom armor to best of your classes ability. Custom armor honestly is USUALLY BETTER THAN WHAT YOU FIND. If I didn't make any I would of not beat JOH on NIGHTMARE or any of the dragons on NIGHTMARE
- get 12 health potions inquisition bonus. 8 Doesn't seem to cut it on NIGHTMARE. Your AI tends to eat them pointlessly sometimes.
- research bonus herb gathering inquisition bonus. Gathering +9 elf roots to make regeneration potions really really really helps.
-research these potions: regeneration, mighty offence, pitch gernades, bee bombs, all resistance potions, health, and armor. With these potions you should topple tough boss fights/dragons.
-get added potion slot. Just one won't cut it.
- You or Iron Bull= Reaver. Need a dragon dead in a hurry? research DRAGON'S RAGE. Just watch the healt or slam on a regen potion first thing. where talking 300 starting damage to 7,000 near death damage to anything. Dragons and tough bosses included.
- you ro Black wall= champion. getting the bottom left ability + upgrade has you nearly last forever.
- Get knockdown abilities: grapple chain, the bottom middle in rouges subterfuge or shield bash +upgrades. Good anti terror/Envy attacks. This prevents them from terror spamming you to death.
-mages get fade walk+upgrade. A mage surrounded? no problem. Control them temporarly then have them fade dash+freeze away from them. they'll get back to doing their thing immediatly afterward. Meantime warriors will do SHATTER damage to them with stuff like SHIELD BASH.
- SHATTER DAMAGE is your friend. as mage or with a mage have them research Ice and fire attacks. when they freeze then set a guy on fire the enemy will go from full health to either barely any or half no matter difficulty.
-Spirit mage is your friend. Having a dedicated defensive mage isn't a bad thing at all. They'll spam barriers, revives, or dispells to deal with pain in the butt guys. Healing belts turn partial revived people into full healthed revived people.
-archers are MAJOR THREATS. One shot from a unknown archer can bring anyone down to 15 or 20% of health if left alone. JOH they will freeze any character which will create a potential SHATTER effect on that forzen character. F warrior targets and or bosses....these punks has gots to go first.
-mages second priorty. Most have barrier spells they can add to their allies. kill these after archerers and before warriors or bosses. If one has a barrier get a mage to dispel it the quarter jump.
-normal VS barrier or armored targets. People with no defence bonuses should be targetd first however ensure they above two are dealt with first. If one archer has a barrier while another doesn't deal with the barrierless one first then the barrier one. Same goes for mages. mage without a barrier is a easy to kill mage. Pay attention to whoes what.
-pre battle potions. Entering a tough fight and or fade portal fight, hit up your tactics menu then have everyone throw a nesessary potion. For an example going to be dealing with a rage demon oriented fade portal? throw on a regen potion and fire potion one after the other then do what you do best. Don't expect to beat portals or bosses potion free. potions save lives even if prematurly used.
-Level 2-4 levels above reccomended level of stage on NIGHTMARE going to make it easy? Ehhhh...at times guess again. Thinking that way at times while dealing with arcane horrors gets you killed all of the time. I'm at 15 and they are at 12 yet I lose a character in seconds. Should of thrown a potion on.
Story tips
In Hushed whispers
- preatty much see above pertaining to fade portals, archerers and mages. Also snag Liliana asap and characters. Also having a stealth character with the bottom middle ability in subterfuge is nice because you can stealth up to a mage and knock down them and have your party members pwn them before they throw on a barrier.
-avoid spell bomb spots.
Champions of the Just
-Don't worry to much about killing everyone for the part when the templars are trying to take down the barrier. run towards the door behind you immediatly and hook left to find some cover to have the enemies funnel towards you. You won't be picked off quickly by the archers this way.
-As I mentioned about Envy knocked down attacks pervent him from terror spamming you. Wehn he tries do a knockdown attack immediatly and he will stop doing it. Also as a Sw/SH if you have shield wall throw it on in front of Envy. He will idiot and attack that person instead of the people swacking him/her. however again if Envy terror spams do a knockdown attack.
-As i mentioned about archers kill these guys asap. + side is I don't recall mages being around so picking them off should be easy.
Battle at Haven
-Regen potions first. turn off regular potion use and stick to these until empty. Then health potions afterward per character
-try to level above it. It's honestly kind of hard to do.
-beat marsh before doing it. Usually I feel like if you can beat the marsh zone you should be ready for this chapter. Also if you have or have been using a 2 h person the bosses 2 H weapon is very useful.
-"person in danger" first off you kind of need to memorize where people are in danger at. Try to save before hand and reload if they die. Try to deal with the groups not taking on people in danger first. "which ones first?" straight, up, save templar, straight, left, save trapped in building left, keep hanging on the left path, save submitter gal, right, right, save two people by burning pots, down, bar keeper, head back up, should be it.
-To activate trebushet to sack Corypheus (final part) 1: Don't fight everyone. Try to run away from the first fight. The enemy group's main quest is to reach the main base door. Once they do and if you flee to a safe place they won't give chase.
-To activate trebushet to sack Corypheus (final part) 2: That hill near it on your left is your friend. when reinforcements are called climb as far up it as you can, the bloody AI will guy by guy climb it. You'll pick them off guy by guy this way sure but less mess and fuss.
-To activate trebushet to sack Corypheus (final part) 3: Take your time with it. It may seem like the meter depletes but it only depletes a small bit but not gradually. Just pick off the soldier and archer (archer first) then get back to messing with the switch.
-To activate trebushet to sack Corypheus (final part) 4: "this is not working!" Head back to a safe spot away from the trebushet and hill then try to guy by guy somewhere else.
Fade story
-"Boss is tough tough!" Sadly it would be best to do every side quest here and collect everyones personal nightmare. In doing so the boss becomes a pushover. Even on Nightmare.
Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts
- Fidning the halla statues are helpful. Also trying to think Orlisian helps too.
-"Playing the game" Play a game of "Hey Brialla, this is what I hear about Gaspard and Celene" or "Hey Gaspard, this is what I heard about Celene or Brialla" or "Hey Celene this is what I heard about Gaspard or Brialla". This adds approval points.
-Finding coins improve points.
JOH
-Read potions. These help big time here and the bloody temple boss. Hakkon wise just fight him as a ice dragon.
Corypheus
-"What level are you at?" I am usually way beyond reccomended so he's a sinch because I have done every side quest, killed all dragons, conquered Oasis temple, made kcik butt weapons and armor and juiced up my potions.
