Why does my arrows fall flat?

I've really have tried googling around for this, but so far i've found nothing about this subject.

So, basically i'm playing the ranger in single player, and so far my auto attacks seem to just not reach enemies at any distance beyond 5 meters(most of the time)..

if the enemy is slightly higher up than me i can hardly hit from 3, the arrow just duds straight into the ground.

The curious thing is that sometimes my character actually does decide to shoot properly, when the fight has been going on for a while, as if she needs to warm up... actively clicking on the target with the mouse cursor tends to help, instead of pressing "R".

I just don't get how the system works, could someone please enlighten me?

The problem may be that they fall flat when you're autoattacking without having a target selected (left clicking or right clicking on a target). Try manually clicking on a new target every time your current target dies.

You'll know you have someone targeted when you can see their healthbar in the top center of your screen.

I always right click an enemy to get the targeting going. Don't know the difference between the yellow and the white one, but it makes little difference. =/

It seems to help gaining the yellow marker by left clicking or using a spell.. Still trying to figure out the max range, which so seems to be about the breadth of a large road, depending on altitude.. does different bows in fact have different range?
