He is hax, too OP, yet he doesn't even make the Darkspawn his army.  They are endless, and perfect for him. Or maybe he doesn't know that he has the calling. It acts on his subconcous. He might even meet with his "friends", or the Architect. That's what I think is what he would had done had he not been led to the orb.

He wants to return Thedas to the old Tevinter, not make the whole world blighted

They Why. Why does Corypheus want to return back to the black city where he was just cast out and blighted, a place where he was already at, and where he failed miserably (destroying his whole empire)...Why return????

(I guess just because someone spend their points on their willpower, and magic doesn't mean they increase their cunning. I bet that MAGE is wishing he had put some points into cunning....)

It's a bit weird the game never explains why Cory targeted the White Divine for his 'sacrifice'.

I can only assume he wanted the Divine because it might form some link to the Maker/GoldenOrBlack City. I'm not sure how he came to that conclusion considering how the magisters entered the Fade last time.

I believe it may be because the old priests of the old gods seemed to have practiced sacrifice in their tempels and at their altars. Corypheus may have suffered a crisis of faith and  no longer believe that the old gods as he knew them exist but he may still keep to the worshipping practices that he is most familiar to or think is most proper. He may believe that a sacrifice is necessary to grant him the power he wants from the orb and what more appropriate sacrifice than the Divine, the personification of the false god whose empty seat he wants to claim for his own. He also has a bit of an ego so he'll likely not suffer a lesser sacrifice than someone with the title of Divine to mark his ascension into godhood.

As for the Black Divine, he may be seen as just a pretender to Corypheus since he holds only power in Tevinter and I do not believe the Imperial Chantry is recognised as a part of the Chantry whereas the White Divine holds power in many more countries than just Orlais.

I wasn't even aware that he would become the next bad guy after Legacy. He reminded me a lot of the Architect, who wasn't pure evil either.

To become a god.

I can only agree with the OP.

At the temple of sacred ashes all he had to do was lock the door, or post a guard.

Unless ofcourse the door was locked and the Maker unlocked it for Inky.

It was definitely a giant "**** you" to the Southern Chantry.

Did you forget how this incident nearly threw the entire South into chaos?

To become a god.

And how does one become a God.... is it ever explained?

Do you just go in there and hand in your application or something?

I believe Corypheus believes that the Black City holds power and so he seeks to assume a seat within it so he can rule from there. It is symbolic as well as since the Chantry believes the Golden City to be the seat of the Maker.

"Let me tell you what I know about "the Seven," those Tevinter magisters said to have entered the Golden City long ago. Each was a high priest to one of the Old Gods. Each came to the ritual shrouded in secrecy, hiding their true name even from each other. They were competitors, you see. The Old Gods told them to break into the Golden City and usurp the Maker's throne... but only one of them could sit on the throne. (...)" - From Questioning the Chant by Magister Vibius Agorian (Codex entry: Corypheus)

They knew about orbs like that from his time, after all they have paintings in his homeland of the dreamer's using those orbs...so he might have knew what it was and he also at this point knew he was immortal sort of, due to dying once before.

Has to why he didn't choose someone else to unlock it, he wanted to put the south into chaos so the north could rise again.

His more stupid mistakes came after the vilalge haven was destoryed, he kept his plans the same.

It's not really clear on why the magisters failed in their task. They were clearly cast down after entering the city, and Corypheus is stupid enough to try again. For all his talk of how the throne was 'empty', he was somehow unable to claim it himself. So good job, idiot!

If you're going to insult Corypheus, at least spell his name right. :) Corypheus is not stupid and I say is not, because his spirit is in the Fade. He isn't destroyed.

His plan was genius. Kill the Divine at the summit crushing the faith of Andrastians. If the Maker will not save his most faithful especially the Divine, then either he has turned his back on the people or he doesn't exist.  Use the Orb of Fen'Harel to create the anchor, giving him the ability to physically enter the Fade so he can return to the now Black City and claim the throne as his own. From there he can influence the minds of all who dream. Use the Grey Wardens to create an army of demons. He can't control demons but he can control the Wardens via the taint. With the demons bound to the Wardens, he can now control them and unleash them on Orlais. With the faith of the Andrastians shattered and demons everywhere destroying and killing everyone, all who dream will see and hear a "god" that will answer their prayers for help. Corypheus will answer the prayers of the people and destroy his demon army, "saving" them all. They will see him as a god worth worshipping.

Good plan, but it was spoiled by chance or divine intervention via Andraste and the Maker.

Yh but it backfired on him the first time so badly. I don't know how he can possibly think he can just walk in again and somehow it'll work the second time. He could've actually explained it. Also he's already a God-tier mage who can never die. Just conquer Thedas already instead of wasting your time trying to get in the bloody fade so much.

Corypheus bothers me because he really wasn't developed enough.  He had potential to develop into an interesting villain, but he just... didn't.

How can you say it wouldn't work a second time, if you don't know what went wrong the first time? Sure, Corypheus seemed a bit confused about what happened too, in Legacy and when you hear in his memories, but he may have figured it out after recording those :D

They were clearly cast down after entering the city,

Were they? They got in, they still had to get out... maybe they couldn't keep the door opened and were forced to either find another exit or open another door themselves. No reason to assume their exit was the same as their entrance.

And, when they made it back to the real world (or possibly even before) they may have been under the thrall of their gods, seeking them out and completely forgetting their mortal selves.

Cory is under the belief, correct or not, that the Black City contains the secret to godhood. Last time he got tainted, but now he figures "What's the worst that could happen?" since he's already tainted.

I doubt that last part. Both Corypheus and the Architect hear but are not bound to the call of the Old Gods. If we're talking about specific Gods, Corypheus might be excused because Dumat is dead but the Architect was immune well before the Fifth Blight.

The Architect was decent, especially by comparison...
