As the title says I'm playing on hard mode with trials turned on

So how do you reduce the amount of cleave damage you take when engaging in melee? I've stacked as much melee defense as I could but I last only for a few seconds when I comes to fighting against big grunts that swings its weapon left and right. The best I could do is pretty much just stay in range

There is a spot in the back where you can't be hit by a brute's backswing. Generally though I find the best solution is to farm out fade touched dawnstone for that 5 seconds of Walking Fortress proc chance. That masterwork is great for making sure you're not knocked around.

Early on in the game (Basically the far west and southwest part of the hinterlands and the Hand of Korth fight) I generally don't screw around auto attacking and only go in to toss in a Twin Fangs or Deathblow out of stealth.

A mage spec'd in winter can lock them down for a while too. Ice mine's freeze lasts forever and if you have the only detonation, you can get the most out of the freeze duration, then shatter them.

Funnily enough, Deathblow's 2nd hit can cause knockdown on most of the brutes in the game from behind.

Just don't attack from the front though.

Until you've got better gear, you have to hit-and-run. Flank Attack/Skirmisher with Stealth upgraded to Lost in the Shadows is key. You go into Stealth, maneuver into position, Flank Attack, which immediately puts you back into stealth that allows you to get away, passing through other enemies if necessary.

You can also use Evade or Hook & Tackle/Beats Walking.  For enemies that aren't resistant, you can also use KO Powder to give you some free attacks or to set up a combo.

The previous advice is good.  In my recent run to get the trial achievements I went archer until Skyhold specifically to avoid having to play around the melee AOE damage.  After Skyhold I picked up the Tempest specialization and reallocated my skill points for melee.  The Frost and Lightning Flasks stop the melee swings.  I also picked up Throwing Blades.  With upgrades and good weapons I am finding that Throwing Blades will kill almost any single target short of a dragon in a single Flask of Fire activation.  The ability description says "this bonus stacks" and it isn't kidding.

The new toggle Lost in the Mist in the sabotage line lets you eat any single blow for each stack of elusive (capped at 3).  It's a 5 point investment, but it negates all damage except for dots like burning and poison status. Great for facing giants, brutes, and it even lets you eat single arrow shots.  Best part is that it will protect your party members standing in the mist.

Basically I research into SUBTERFUGE stuff like stealth and I think it's called knockout blow (bottom middle). With stealth and abilities pertaining to getting knockout blow you can use really good hit and run tactics for your DWK rouge and let your warrior tanks play clean up. DWK rouges seem to be built to start fights with a big bang where you can deplete a guy from full health to 50% or 25% left. If not you can kill a problematic guy first thing and have everyone else deal with everyone else. However it would be best to pull away immediately afterward and hope your warriors taunt to gain attraction or you can use that one dash attack in the DWK pool +upgrade which allows you to deal damage then put you on cloak so you can find another opportune time to make another key killing with stealth plummling. Just keep in mind you are no tank so using hit and run methods are ideal instead of charging and expecting to kill everything standing uncloaked. If you play like a warrior I feel your asking for trouble and will go down quick since your armor or bonuses will not permit it.

I play this way on multiplayer and single player on NIGHTMARE. Getting the abilities take some time so while your trying to work to get them just play careful in the mean time.

Also I reccomend the Assassin pool. with Hidden daggers you can projectile attack really well and Marked for death debuffs a enemy/boss very well which makes them lose health super fast to any type of attack. Also having bonus damage to armored targets bonuses are nice VS armored targets.

Also if you can get a cooldown ring, give this to your DWK character you WON'T REGRET IT...TRUST ME. PWN ENEMY MANIA.
