Chaotic evil = ******* who tends to flush the rule books down the toilet.

I actually like the jokers style tbh

I guess the DA archdemons fit that CE definitiion, but that dragon in DA:O had no personality, and the joker mightn't be a good fit in for the Mass Effect style imo. Alternative examples of CE characters include Scarface from the movie Scarface, Tuco from Breaking Bad and Joffrey Lannister from Game of Thrones.

Likely impossible given the narrative structure of BioWare games. Even if BioWare games were renown for their extensive personality choices, there are some sacrifices that need to be made for the sake of a reasonable story. Very few governments would be fine with the idea of just letting a captain go around and be insane and not as many squadmates would like it either. People can accept a Renegade jerk for what he is, but that doesn't extend to pure chaos.

The only reason you're allowed to be an insane sith in KoTOR is because the entire galaxy revolves around you. A character like Shepard doesn't have the ability to break others to his will; he's just a normal-ish guy. If you go around killing the homeless and enslaving children, there's a very limited set of people in the universe who would be OK with that and Shepard doesn't have the force influencing their behavior.

It'd be nice to have a narrative that could adapt to insane behavior, but I don't think it's very feasible in the Mass Effect universe and I doubt that's the kind of story BioWare want to tell.

Who said anything about the player character? What part of "******* who flushes the rulebook dwn the toilet" implies insanity, to you? There are degrees of *******, and people never act until provoked so the odds of deliberately harming children and homeless are very slim. Even Lannister has an understandable logic for the things he did as cruel and as fucked up as it was. People insult them, they get punished, people bore him they get punished, he thinks someone looks homosexual they get a crossbow through the groin.

But I got a think the simplest and one of the most accepted definitions of chaotic evil might be, the one I probably should have started the OP with: bully.

The typical bully is a classic example of chaotic evil, characters like Tuco or Joffrey are really just cowards at heart. They don't follow rules until they're cornered.

You referenced the Joker, so I assumed insanity. Regardless, my point still stands for the player character. It's difficult to justify being needlessly cruel to most people no matter the core logic.

As for an enemy, sure. It's not an archetype BioWare generally use.

I prefer mark hamil as the jokers voice..  Still it would make an awesome character, because well the Joker is awesome.

mark hamils joker is harder to take seriously.

I disagree.  He nailed the character IMO.

But they were just fine with Shep decking a reporter in public....

Even if Shepard did go full Chaotic retard, they wouldn't do anything about it. What are they going to do? Send another Spectre (who is also shitty at his/her job) to take you down? Yea... Doubt it. Lol.

The reporter was clearly being a jerk and it's not like you then proceeded to kick her while she was down and then gouge her eyes out. Mass Effect lets you be a jerk, not evil.

Yes, and impound your ship and cut off all your resources and put a bounty on your head.

Besides, the more important part is that none of your squad mates would want to stay around. It's kind of difficult to tell a story without a cast of characters to back it up.

I'd love to see a game that built in a more realistic chaotic evil mechanic:  You can run around being a ruthless evil bastard, but it increases the chances that your companions that still follow you are likely to turn on you and put a bullet in the back of your head.

Force the player to become isolated and paranoid like chaotic evil leaders tend to become.

Chaotic evil would be hard to implement in story in way that made sense. Renegade Shepard has been at his/her worst just end justifies means-kind of guy, not someone who simply is bad and enjoys chaos and being evil. I think in order to make chaotic evil PC possible Bioware would need  to leave story quite open.

I think this could work, maybe have the antagonist introduced in Andromeda and could also cause problems in the second and third in the triology. They could be a side character that features in the main storylines of the games.

Not going to work.

Not to mention there is no way BioWare would allow it, narratively speaking.
