Why can't we just...join Solas?

I think in light of what happened in Trespasser, joining the Fen'Harel rebellion should actually be a possible choice for a Dalish inquisitor. There are several reasons I can think of:

1. With a Dalish origin and if the inquisitor actually was on good enough terms with Solas, it must mean that he/she is very committed to the history of the elven people and was self-conscious about that fact as well. Coupled with the fact that Lavellan's time with the inquisition was mired in politics and intrigue, it should come as no surprise that Lavellan's impression of human society was less than stellar, and might have actually felt like returning amongst the people once his/her part as Herald of Andraste is over.

2. The inquisitor is already beyond frustrated by the decadence and politics of Thedas by Trespasser - so frustrated that the rant actually ended up on the trailer itself. The entire story of the dlc does nothing to make Towards the end of the dlc, instead of some event that should inspire the Inquisitor into fighting to protect Thedas, the Viddasala's criticism of human society and Solas's plan (restoring all that was lost of elven society, which should sound irrepressibly alluring to any self-respecting Dalish elf) should actually break Lavellan's last commitments to the Inquisition and to Thedas. When Solas says to me, 'You should be more worried about your inquisition', I too scoffed at the thought of 'your inquisition'. It's been plenty implied that the Herald of Andraste was only relevant when there is a clear enemy, and even as the war was still raging there's a lot of people who disapprove and tries to work against the inquisition. Trespasser and the Exalted Council brought this into full focus - after Orlais gets back on their feet and Ferelden reasserts itself, the Inquisition and its Herald are already becoming obsolete and dispensable.

3. The inquisitor's story was ending anyway. Past that point the only thing left is one final speech to decide the fate of the inquisition, and possibly say something about the Herald herself. I can totally see the Lavellan announcing her retirement to the council, then secretly leaving to join Solas. It takes but a couple lines of dialogue and an ending slide - 'Lavellan soon left her post, disappearing into the wilderness. Some report that she was seen amongst the ever-growing throng of elves joining the Dread Wolf's cause, a one-armed elf among the crowd' so on and so forth. If he/she has to appear in DA4 as an ally like Hawke, there can well be a placeholder, much like how the warden ally for Inquisition is interchangeable. It really doesn't impact the game much, but I'm sure Bioware will understand how making the right choice for the inquisitor matters to us players.

4. Following Solas is a legitimate choice. The Inquisitor can choose to be awed by Solas's descriptions of what was, awed by the Crossroads, convinced by Morrigan how preserving and restoring the old glorious world is important - so why not make it happen? Especially Lavellan should have been itching to do that even before defeating Corypheus. And a romanced Lavellan - well, I wouldn't be surprised if she just up and left within a week to go and find Solas.

As the defining, ending chapter for the Inquisition sage, I feel it's very important to allow the Inquisitor to make their own final choices about their lives. Whether it's Lavellan wanting to join Solas, or an inquisitor of any race just wanting to retire to live as a commoner - I just feel that after the game has been so enabling with regards to defining our Herald with choices made, it's a tad weird that no matter how we choose, the Inquisitor is stuck with an inexplicable resolve to be Thedas's defender, and for Lavellan, against restoring his/her own people no less. It's a choice that I think Bioware should try and implement into the game, and give our respective inquisitors the perfect endings for them.

The same reason why you have:

 - Divine Victoria

 - both, Circle and College

 - both, Ferelden and Orlais hating you

 - Qunari attacking Tevinter

 - and Gaspard on the throne :P

at the end of every playthrough.

And the reason is something about the same world state for possible future DA games.

They're not going to do anything more for Inquisition except probably patch Trespasser for bugs. They probably don't let you join Solas because they have other plans for the story.

Ummm... no... Solas includes you in the nonpeople category. So if you could join him you'd basically just get used and discarded(again) and probably die when the world ends. Smart move.

Agree it's frustrating that the option to actually join his cause isn't there for dalish inquisitor's.

Same reason you couldn't join Corypheus, whose plans were essentially similar but less villainous since his plan was to enslave everyone, not kill them.

And why would a Dalish inquisitor want to join something they won't even live to see?

I have a feeling Solas won't survive the Veil being torn down and if he won't, we surely won't either.

Well, he did strongly imply that the Dalish and city elves would not be immune or resistant to the effects of tearing down the veil, which includes our dear lavellan inquisitor too. So she'd probably be against that. The only way it could work is if the writers had Solas say that the modern elves, not just the ancients, would also be positively affected by his plan. Would've added more to the grey morality that Bioware has lately been obsessed with, instead of making it relatively black and white.

Resources.

The option to _ask_ to join Solas is there, but he has plausible enough excuses both for the friend Lavellan and for the romanced Lavellan. Destroying the world is a horrible thing. There is no glory in this, no noble sacrifice. And drawing a friend (or a lover) into this is just too much for Solas to bear - indeed, it's unthinkable.

And he may have one more selfish reason to refuse Lavellan: Solas wants someone to remember him as a friend. Or to love him, even. And no love can endure that many deaths.

A Dalish Inky may sacrifice themselves and everyone else if it meant their people could be great again. Their people go from god like, being on top of the food chain to a broken, lost people who are treated like slaves and second class citizens, there may be some Dalish that believe it would be worth it.

Because it's on the same level of intelligence as joining the archedemon and the game tries to assume your PC has a brain.

Still wishing the (attack) option had worked like refuse and you got a non standard game over.

I mean even on my guys who want to stab Solas they're not gonna say so in his face right after he turned half an army to stone. What kind of moron move is that?

Because you aren't his people. He stated you are going to die with the rest of the world. Solas cares about spirits and Ancient Elves.

I have a Lavellan who would join him in a heartbeat, even if it means she dies.  She both hates shem and loves Solas that much.

But the short answer is that it would be the end of the story.  Though I would have been amused if they had added that choice and then either flashed a GAME OVER screen or an apocalyptic one.

It can go either way. Romanced/high approval Solas admits you are people, but low approval Solas says it's his fault you are not people.

Solas is missing one important thing during his moment of self-pity, regarding spirits. Cole said they are afraid of what's going to happen, so Solas might be unknowingly about to hurt those he loves most.
