Thanks for the tip, Susan. I just tried the suppressing fire thing, and it does seem to help-- it's just not obvious like a killing shot is.
I really like archery. It fits with my image of a rogue, staying out of direct combat but instead sneaking around and sniping. My main complaint is that it takes some time playing the game before you understand stamina management. I've stopped using some of the lesser abilities like pinning and critical shots, saving the stamina for scatter, AoS and (now) suppressing fire. Mages have similar trouble, but they can always guzzle lyrium potions. Even rejuvenation doesn't seem to help all that much.
Is anyone here an archer? (someone who uses bows)

You are so right. But I didn't miss the point. My argument was rather that it doesn't work well late in the game. And the same goes for almost all archer talents. If I can't kill with that shot, the talent is wasted. And I can't. I'll take dual wielding talents for my dex.-warrior-archer instead, thankyou.
It works for me. I soloed all of the Deep Trenches last night without a single healing potion used and had no problem taking out casters with Scatter Shot + AoS combo at level 19, which is pretty late in the game. I have no dual wielding talents and I don't miss them.

I find archers as a whole underwhelming in combat, and tend to stick with mages myself. Though there's supposedly an improved archery mod that makes them more viable.
Arrow of Slaying usually will not even kill a lieutenant ranked creature from what I have seen(using Leliana), whereas shattering(Petrify/Stonefist) most definitely will(has a quicker cooldown, and potions that can restore the lost mana).
In the time you use 1 arrow of slaying and wait on the cooldown, a mage can fire off Petrify twice, and stonefist four times.
