Would it be possible to create new clothing for child npcs?

One thing that bothers me in DAO is how all the children wear the same clothes.  The default clothing works fine for the average human and elf peasant kids, but for other groups I would like to see some variety (something like this mod).  Perhaps leathery or greenish textures for Dalish kiddos, little robes for young mages, or fancier fabric for children of nobility.

Does anyone know if this would be possible to do?  I checked Oren's utc file and saw he doesn't have anything equipped, so I assume the clothes are part of the child body model.  I'm sure the body model itself could be edited, but such changes would affect all the children of that gender in the game, rather than having different ones for each group.  Does anyone know if it would be possible to create clothing to equip on the children (preferably derived from the default clothing so I could simply recolor/retexture it)?  If so, how could I go about doing this?  I'm mostly a noobie with modding so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Yeah, it's pretty straightforward. You just need to create new body models, add those as new rows in Apr_Base, then edit the appropriate UTCs to reference the new appearance entries, as appropriate.

If you wanted to go the visible equipment route, you'd have to change the ModelType entry in Apr_Base from H to P, then create appropriate armour/clothes/naked (base) models with the proper naming conventions per this - http://social.biowar...ing_conventions Note that kids have a gender override set, so all kids are KN. You could change that in Apr_Base so you could use KM and KF for sex differentiation, but I'm not sure what sort of knock-on effect that may have elsewhere, so it may be best to avoid that.

Edit: Here's a couple of quick examples of the APR method with Connor using scaled human male medium armour and noble clothing. If you want to try that, it seems like 72% is a good number for the scale factor. Refer to this post in the Taller Elves thread where I cover scaling models.

Darth.. can you share these?  I would love to dress Connor in an Apprentice robe for the Leliana wedding mod we are working on.  :)

Can't do anything at the moment as my old system died a couple of weeks ago and the new system is still pretty bare bones. I haven't reinstalled DA, Max, PS, etc, and I was contemplating not even bothering to reinstall the toolset. I do still have the files for the armour and clothes pictured above though if they are of any use:

I can scale down the robe model for you, but it might be a week or two before I get around to reinstalling Max.

Thank you so much! It will be quite a while until it is needed (probably a couple of months). If you cannot do the mage robes, the noble clothing will work perfectly too :D Thank you again!!!

~~Edited to add screenshot. This is great.. now Connor looks like a genuine Noble child!! Thank you Darth!!!

OK, I've added noble clothes variants B, D, and E to the above pictured C, and apprentice robes variants A and B. I have also added LOD2/3 models for all of them (and the medium armour C pictured above). The GDA has been updated with entries for the new models.

I had some issues with the LOD2 meshes for both the apprentice robes and the armour, necessitating some hackery. You'll want to test those in-game by having him do some looped animation, and then slowly moving away from him until you trigger the switch between LODs (LOD2 should kick in about 15m or so away, LOD3 about 20-30m away). Make sure there is no wild distortion or otherwise incorrect deformation.

There's a bit of a freakishly large man hands thing going on

so you might want to avoid any close ups of those in cutscenes.

Cool, LOD0 seems ok. Let me know if LOD2/3 (especially 2) have any issues.

Thank you :D So far, everything looks great. Once I do all the scenes (the race/origins will be different) and can test them in-game, I can let you know. These are marvelous!!!

I was thinking earlier I should look at the male elf body and see if that is a better fit when scaled down. All these ones so far have used male human models. When I tried the commoner clothes it looked pretty ridiculous, far too broad.

Here is a WIP video from the toolset. You can see Connor up close (like the screenshot) and at a distance towards the end.

OK, saw the video and it seems fine from that, although I'd prefer a more empirical test to be 100% sure.

On a different note, I didn't include the enchanter robe because I had some issues with the human male variant. For whatever reason the elf male version seems to work fine, so I can do up a child version of that if fluffy shoulders are your thing. I was also contemplating doing some elf children heads, using the same morph trick I used to make a gnome race in BG2R.

I'll be able to test more thoroughly later on. I'll equip it on possessed Connor and play that area again.

It was a joy to finally be able to change wee Oren Cousland's attire to something more appropriate for the  scion of a powerful noble house.

Many thanks, DP!

Cool, although the collar seems a little large for their scrawny little necks. I think I should probably swap them all to the Elf mesh instead, given that it is a bit skinnier.

I didn't notice it until you said something :) ^^ Not at all a big deal. I am so happy to have new kid clothes, who cares about the neck?? I'm also going to equip the circle kids with mage robes :D

I started to do that, but then I realized I'd have to either put the girl!apprentices in male robes or leave them in regular clothes and trying to decide made my wee brain hurt. Which do you think is the better option?

I'm going to look at them in the toolset. Maybe one can be retextured in pink or a more feminine color? :)

Edited.. ack  even colored pink, it looks awful on the girls. Let me try something else :D

I can give them female robes, but that would give them something of a sudden growth spurt in certain areas....

It would probably work for teenagers. You'd have them as a new creature race/appearance, maybe scale them to around 75-80% the height of adults or something.

But, it would not look right for the little girls.. like the ones in the circle tower. I'm going to do another retexture and see if it looks any better than the first one I did. Thank you so much DP :D
