Well Dragon Age does seem to have a larger female following than Mass Effect. However, I doubt that Bioware will use a female protagonist in the MEA marketing. Perhaps as an alternate like they did with ME3, but it will be the man that is leading the way in terms of visibility.

I disagree. First, I think that a character creator is an essential part of a video game and if this feature is included, then an announcement is required. And second, the publishers/developers have the responsibility to get people to buy their products and not the other way around. They have to release enough info to potential customers and shouldn't assume that people will research their products on their own.

That's called "laziness." If you're actually interested, you would, at least, take some time to research on the product and on the company's products. Most, if not all, BioWare games allow a gender option in their RPGs, and if the customer who is interested in their products doesn't want to research but is willing to watch a video on the internet, that clearly tells you that they don't care about the product much at all to take some time to research apart from being slightly interested in the product.

Take from it what you want but clearly it shows that of those who played and finished ME2/ME3, they prefer to play as the dude.

I'd prefer if Bioware used two protagonist with iconiq look in the marketing side by side, one female and one male.

Though I wouldn't mind if Bioware didn't have iconiq look this time and rather focused on showing that PC of ME:A is customisable by showing different PC's everytime. Seriously it should be mentioned somewhere in the trailers that you are able to make your own character in the game and that you can play as female character cause otherwise people will miss crucial information like that and are less likely to pick up the game.

People wouldn't have to look very hard to find that information. If they only go by a random trailer and did no further research, then I'd say its their fault. Happened to me. I saw a trailer for the first ME and didn't care too look into it. Only after Dragon Age Origins did I see what I've been missing and kicked myself for not doing further research. It taught me to look closer at games in the future before making a judgment call.

Well when I'm thinking of getting new games and not knowing much what to get I usually go into youtube, watch trailer of the game and then some gameplay. I might look into reviews as well, but usually if the trailer is not interesting enough I don't go further than that if I'm not really interested of the game. If those don't show that you have CC in the game and not set protagonist I won't be able to get that information. I don't usually follow games as closely as I do with ME and DA after all.

Cause DAI did a **** job at it and looked how that turned out. The fans seems okay with it but thats unaccepatble I recently stumbled upon a sheet with an overwhelming Broshep/Fmshep ratio and even though their are more male gamers than female i doubt the margin is THAT big. Mshep was the face of ME and wouldnt be surprised if some players didnt know Femshep existed.

This is not a SJW thread btw(i have never played a female character in a game, never will), this is a thread about Bioware(or should i say EA) needing to be more creative with their advertisement. If you truly try to appeal to any type of gamer like your fandom states you do than show it, your bro trailers wont make the Call of Duty crowd flock to your games any faster anyway. They didnt for the last 2 ME games and they wont now so stop pandering, especially to the shooter crowd.

One of the devs said they will release a trailer for both genders (or two trailers like the ME3 ones).

That being said, I do hope the female protagonist will get marketed this time and get enough attention in Mass Effect, unlike female Shepard's sh!tty treatment.

Pretty much. I don't think a trailer has ever swung it for me one way or the other. I've never watched one and decided to buy a game that I wasn't feeling beforehand, nor has a trailer ever put me off a game. You simply cannot cram enough useful information into such a tiny time frame. Especially when many trailers contain no gameplay at all.

You know, everyone says it doesn't matter what gender the protagonist is in the marketing materials, but the moment DAI had a couple demos with a female Inquisitor, suddenly ten threads popped up asking why Bioware is erasing men forever from their games.

Pretty much this.

Trailer usually shows faster what the game is about when gameplay on first glance shows how you play the game.

For some reason I doubt that, considering "female" is an option on the character creator. Also considering that FemShep has appeared in marketing.

If you now you are going to buy the game anyways, why does it matter which gender is marketed more?

You would think marketing should also focus on new potential customers. You know, the ones that don't bother looking into something if it's not interesting right off the bat. In the sea of new games, there's got to be something short but effective to catch the eye.

Someone who already knows about Bioware also knows what to expect from them, so this first-line of marketing isn't really for them.

As for male & female PC both being in one trailer, they could do a fade in montage with numerous different looks that you can create with CC. Fade in between different people in the same specific armor during a walk towards the camera, for example. You can showcase many different types of people like that without it being confusing.

Me, personally -- I'd like it to be completely without PC, just focus on the bigger story, like the teaser trailer already did. I think it's plenty interesting, being a SF title and all. And if they're doing iconic looks, I'd expect them to make fitting face models for both male and female, although I don't think it's necessary. To me, ME was always about this ambiguous Shepard, having an iconic face disperses a bit of that magic.

Because I went to university for a gender studies degree and applied for a writer's position at The Guardian. I think I know a thing or two about sexism and misogyny, and let me tell ya, the lack of female representation in trailers is literally rape.

Because the purpose of marketing isn't for the existing player base.

If people have to go digging, then the marketing hasn't done its job. The purpose of marketing is to get the message out there.

Also reminder that Mass Effect and DA2 didn't say anywhere on the game cover or most marketing materials that choosing your gender was an option.

Because I like seeing women in trailers and gameplays, it's simple as that. If it doesn't matter to you, then why do you care?

Besides, it makes no sense for a game that has gender options to market one damn gender and also show only said gender and completely ignore the other.

I wonder how those figures would change if the default protagonist, the one you get by quickly clicking through menus to get to the game, was female.

Sure it is. The purpose of marketing is to generate hype for a product, sell pre-orders, and garner enough interest in the product to turn a profit. Anything else is secondary.

Well yes, but anybody hardcore enough to have already decided to purchase the game isn't the target audience for that marketing. Likewise, anybody familiar enough with Bioware games to know they always offer character customization isn't necessarily being targeted, either.

Then why they aren't trying to market the others too with hype? Why should the marketing focus only on one group since Bioware knows the straight male isn't the only one who get their games and the more they attract other groups, the more newcomers will have. Besides, dudes will still get marketed. They won't ignore them.

Btw, where have you been. Haven't seen you around lately.

What if there are marketing reasons behind it? There is a target market for everything.

How many women do you see driving trucks in Ford F150 or other pickup truck commercials?

How many men do you see in laundry detergent commercials?

This is bullshit because they never bothered to market women too in first place to see how it fares (and i'm talking about the day when the first ME was in works). Women had no idea you can play as a female in the first ME. Because they never bothered to put some hype on this too. Therefore the other groups weren't that interested.

And to think I found out about ME when someone told me you can play as a gay lady.

And who says that Bioware (or any other videogame company for that matter) is obligated to market towards women? This is my point. Is there a law that is being broken if a game doesn't market towards women? Is it illegal for a game to not give consumers the option to play as a female?
