The next Mass Effect needs more female/diverse trailers.

I wonder how those figures would change if the default protagonist, the one you get by quickly clicking through menus to get to the game, was female.

Considering that 80% of the people who played ME2 DID NOT use the default option but rather the custom face Shepard, those figures would not change by much.

Most people who played Mass Effect played with a custom character (skipping the male default) and of those who did that, most of them went with the dude.

Again, why is it so hard to accept that gamers preferred to play as a dude?  Just accept it. I mean, you still get your option to play as a female.

I gotta wonder sometimes though, why some of you aren't supporting some nice female trailers (male trailers will be there too) instead of constantly saying "they should market to dudes only because muh marketing x and y". This doesn't help. You have to know that there are people, men and women who like to see some women in trailers, it's a win win scenario either way. Know why?

Because men will still get their dude marketing. A nice way to market is to see some nice male/female covers. Male/female tiny models, some male/female gameplays here and there. Where's the harm in this? Everyone wins, even if the males will sell more, the females will also sell.

I don't understand it. Trailers are made to attract people and for people to say, oh nice trailer - nice protagonist. I like to see my woman protagonist kicking arses.

So why not have a male trailer that has a Black male, and another for an Asian male, and another for a Hispanic male. Then do it over again for the female gender.

I mean how deep in this are we going to go so that we please everyone and not make it feel like some groups are being excluded?

I mean, if you are a female who refuses to buy a game cause it didn't feature a female trailer, then what does that say about you?

Going back to my original point, what if there are business/marketing reasons as to why the EA marketing department decides to use the male as the main marketing visual? What if there are numbers that shows that males make up the majority of their buyer base and that they want to ensure that they keep their interest? This happens all the time in business marketing and not just in videogames. Like my examples about the pick up truck commercials. Do women buy and drive pickup trucks? Of course they do! But men make up the larger market so thus you see mainly men driving the trucks in the commercials along with a grizzly male voice over, it is meant to "speak to them".....their larger demographic.

Trailers are made to attract people but they are also made to attract their target market and I would not be surprised if EA had internal numbers that shows that their majority consumer is male, and thus they market to them.

I am a progressive person myself but that does not mean that I have to be politically correct and irrational.

Then why they aren't trying to market the others too with hype? Why should the marketing focus only on one group since Bioware knows the straight male isn't the only one who get their games and the more they attract other groups, the more newcomers will have. Besides, dudes will still get marketed. They won't ignore them.

Btw, where have you been. Haven't seen you around lately.

The marketing isn't directed toward any particular group.

Where did I said about refusing to buy the game?

I'm with you on marketing more black dudes/asians etc. If it's so much work, then the trailer shouldn't focus on one face and make the trailer different, more neutral. Show male and female and hide their faces, problem solved. It's a game with customization and DAI did good at hiding the protag's face. (even though it was male but they had gameplays with female).

Still sold pretty good. Anyway, they already said they're going to show a female trailer too so, all i'm saying is, they should give the female more attention and not stop on only one trailer.

Granted, I've only read this page of the thread, but from what I've seen, precisely zero people are saying anything like this.

I guarantee you, nobody who isn't a violent psychopath cares whether the people in the trailer are male or female.

This doesn't help. You have to know that there are people, men and women who like to see some women in trailers, it's a win win scenario either way. Know why?

There are more people who don't. Know why?

Because men will still get their dude marketing.

Nothing gets me quite so much as seeing somebody take a non-gendered issue and make it all about gender.

A nice way to market is to see some nice male/female covers. Male/female tiny models, some male/female gameplays here and there. Where's the harm in this? Everyone wins, even if the males will sell more, the females will also sell.

Twice the work for no extra tangible reward. 99% of women in the world aren't so insecure as to abstain from purchasing something just because there were little or no women in the advertising for said product. You also don't need to refer to people as "the males" or "the females" like it's some red vs. blue faction warfare, pitting the men against the women.

I don't understand it.

I can tell.

Trailers are made to attract people and for people to say, oh nice trailer - nice protagonist. I like to see my woman protagonist kicking arses.

Okay? Then purchase the game and play as an arse kicking woman. Wanting the people who make the trailers to cater to your whim is not only a fruitless waste of time because they won't do it, but it's also annoying for the rest of us who share my "I don't care" philosophy, and while I can't speak for the people who do make the trailers, but I would guess it annoys them too. If their plans are set, then their plans are set.

And who says that Bioware (or any other videogame company for that matter) is obligated to market towards women? This is my point. Is there a law that is being broken if a game doesn't market towards women? Is it illegal for a game to not give consumers the option to play as a female?

How is law related?

In order to bring more female players to the game and not alienate already existing fanbase it'd be good call from Bioware and simply something that people want to see.

"Alienate"

Please. If somebody is really so fickle that they would NOT buy the game just based on the lack of a female protagonist in the trailers, then that's their problem, not Bioware's, EA's, or anyone else's. That is the epitome of first world problems. Bioware isn't alienating anyone by having the male protagonist in their trailers. Anyone who is enough of a crybaby to leave wasn't a fan to begin with.

They've deluded themselves into believing that women like the same things as men, now they're desperately trying to discredit every bit of data that contradicts their delusions. It's sad, really.

This is bullshit because they never bothered to market women too in first place to see how it fares (and i'm talking about the day when the first ME was in works). Women had no idea you can play as a female in the first ME. Because they never bothered to put some hype on this too. Therefore the other groups weren't that interested.

And to think I found out about ME when someone told me you can play as a gay lady.

If women weren't interested because they couldn't play as a woman in the game, then those women are sexist.

Chevy made the above commercial when women represented only 11% of the pickup truck market, because they wanted to target a previously-ignored demographic.

When women make up the largest growing demographic of gamers, particularly when Bioware games tend to appeal to a large portion of female gamers, it's silly to ignore them entirely. No, I do not have any illusions about the business decisions that go into the marketing of their games. I took business and marketing in school. But there is also sound business practice in expanding into demographics you previously did not target.

If gender isn't such an issue, then why Bioware, or any other company that has games with gender options, are so persistent on focusing on dude protagonists only? To attract male buyers because they think only with a dude in trailers, they'd be interested in the game? So that means if it was a woman instead, they wouldn't be interested? Okay.

But when I want to see a woman instead, "i take a non-gendered issue and make it all about the gender".

Assumption then would likely be that you either can play with both characters or that you can choose one. That assumption wouldn't be more wrong than that you have one set protagonist in my opinion.

So just trade one misconception for another?

But I guess only way to make it clear that you aren't playing set protagonist is to show CC in the trailer.

It wouldn't have a place in a cinematic trailer/commercial, but a trailer featuring gameplay should absolutely show off the CC.

I don't like this casual assertion that women only want to play games with female PCs. It's like saying black people only want to see Tyler Perry or Spike Lee movies.

As a female, I've never been interested in whatever kind of protagonist they decide to show in trailers and I really don't see the point of this discussion (it's just a trailer...). Also, if a newcomer to Bioware considers buying one of their games, a quick google search will tell them that they're able to create a protagonist of both genders. I hardly think that this realization only occurs by watching the trailers.

You only see these types of topics on Bioware forums because I hate to say it....but Bioware has become the unofficial  "socially progressive" developer in which such issues have to be addressed. I am for women's rights as all men should be (I mean, we all have a mother and we may have a daughter). But there is a difference between fighting a fight and looking for a fight where there is none.

I mean, is it REALLY that important that Bioware have both a female and male trailer, no, but because they have as of late attracted "that type" of fanbase, they must play up to them. You do not see these type of threads in Fallout 4 communities. You can play as a female character but Bethesda has been marketing the male character, why? Because most of their players are probably male so they want to sustain that. That does not make them sexist or bigots, just simple business marketing. But people today in the this politically correct environment we live in today makes such arguments.

Who's having problems "accepting" anything? Pointing out clear flaws in this rather simple-minded deduction of data isn't tantamount to saying that people don't ultimately prefer to play as males. Only that it's neither that straightforward nor that substantial of a landslide to grandstand about it.

I mean if you give women our trailer, where does it end? You have to give every single group on the planet a trailer. Yeesh!

Are you that threatened by women? Is this the real issue? I think it might be.
