Having a PREFERENCE does not make somebody sexist, racist, or a homophobe. Just saying.

On Topic: A male protagonist on the cover of ME:A box art will not keep me (and I'm sure many other female gamers) from buying the game. Most RPGs allow you to create a custom character, gender and all. Would I like a female version of the protagonist advertised / on the box art? I sure would. If it doesn't happen, its no big deal because I can take comfort in the fact that the advertised male will not be my "main" character. Bioware games have always included the option to play a female character and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The face that ends up on the cover (male or female) shouldn't be something to get all riled up about.

Though I have a feeling that that was the OP's intention.

I think Bioware games have bigger kinks to work out, than whether or not it's a female protagonist in the trailer.

Just a thought.

These crazed 'feminists' apparently won't buy the game if their female hero isn't everywhere. Ugh.

I think video games would be better served by advertising more like movies. Video game trailers tend to be nothing but action and environment shots. Completely shallow and not at all indicative of what the games are. Movie trailers give you some of the plot, establish tone, introduce you to characters and their personalities, and include a handful of exciting shots to catch your interest.

Something like these?

I do like story-based trailers, but I don't think they fit with non-set protagonist that much.

Why wouldn't a set protagonist work with a story-based trailer?

Set protagonist works with story-based, but non-set doesn't. I think non-set doesn't work since story-based trailers put too much emphasis on the main character and if they show iconiq look of main character in game like this the main character is still not one you play since your make your own character. And it's quite big difference that  you make your own character and do not play as Adam Jensen or Geralt and I think this difference should be shown.

EDIT: And sorry it was a typo ^^

you know what I think would be cool? a trailer where various character reference the main character but you never actually see them till the very end and its just a super close up shot of the front of their helmet. with reflections of fire and explosions in the visor.

"Some more women would be nice, and might encourage more female players to take notice of the game."

"OMG you won't even buy the game if there aren't women on the cover? You want to get rid of men? You really hate men?"

"Of course I'll by a game from a company that I like so much that I signed up for their forums. I just don't think it has to be men every single time. I'd like acknowledgement of one of the game's core appealing features."

So sort of like the beginning of the Meet the Pyro trailer?

Dragon Age appeals to women and gays, but a TPS like Mass Effect doesn't. So, no, they should focus dudes.

What i love about this premiss that it has to completely ignore facts in evidence about mass effect to even remotely be taken serious.

This idea that a male protagonist is the only gender that can appeal to gamers is measurably false when you look how popular FemShep is and was. How countless gamers state the only true Shepard is HaleShep. There was a successful marketing campaign for ME3 all on the cannon look for Shepard's female persona. You don't do this kind of marketing unless there is (no pun intended) a market for it.

I know more than a few grrrls that can kick my ass in shooters. Granted that isn't a high mark to beat as i don't play shooters for the most part. So beating me is no accomplishment but the point being girls are not all playing games that ill informed, misogynistic, clueless, gamers think they are.

The big irony here is that most of these idiots would love for a girl to actually pay attention to them in real life so their big plan to get more face time with women is to alienate them at a hobby they have in common? Brilliant!

Sometimes you witness first hand why sex robots are required because its some people's only hope.

I don't buy this. i used the default Shepard appearance for the male and female Shepard more than not. In other words i didn't always use it but for the most part I did. yet every single Shepard I made was different with the exception of one Shepard I remade because of a corrupt import and I had lost the past saves when I bought a new puter.

In so many RPGs I just use the default character because I CAN role play. I don't need to "own" every aspect of a character to call it my own, to take on a new role and go with it. This idea that you must "own" every aspect of character creation for the character to be yours is based on a false premiss. And frankly is measurably false. All acting is is role playing and actors have almost no control over many aspects of the character they play yet they are able to take on a new role and go with it.

If some many of the "purest RPG gamers" spent as much effort actually role playing as they trying to convince people why you need X and or Y in games they would realise that role playing isn't tied to the things they think it is.

As long as the game is good I'm fine. I don't need to see a woman in a trailer to feel empowered to play a damn video game. It's stupid, and those damn feminist are stupid.

Using default look in the trailers makes it look like game has set protagonist instead of having CC and making your own protagonist. That is what this is about, not differences in playstyles of RPGs.

Most people like trailers; just go on YouTube. Trailer #14 for [insert game here] gets watched 550,000 times, analysed by 100 different people, and all the feelz spill over into the comments. Gamers like their trailers. You do. I do. If you say otherwise, you're either lying, ignorant, or an exception. Use your observational skills.

Is it really unexpected that some people would want to see their preference used in a trailer they're going to watch 30 times before the game comes out? In order to be fair, Bioware would have to produce two versions of each trailer (time and money) or toggle between different trailers (more economical), AAA games get a handful of trailers nowadays, so that isn't ridiculous. However, which trailer is shown first and the contents of the trailers will be ranted about for reason X, Y, and Z. So solve one headache, create another.

Think of the children.

Spreadsheets showing who played/did what in games are meaningless if you're doing anything more than simple data mining. For every "study" I've seen that says gender A prefers to play as gender A, I've seen just as many "studies" and, you know, actual people, say they prefer to do the opposite. This isn't information that should be used for anything meaningful.

Well for me i would love one main trailer with male and the other with female protagonist, and if they show them with the s/s companion(though they've done that with femshep in ME3, see double standarts), that would be interesting.

Trailers with female protagonist is not such a rarity nowadays, but the trailer with the gay/lesbian protagonists sure is.The romance options used in Bioware trailers are always heterosexual( well if u dont count that hand-holding in Citadel dlc trailer).

B-but trailers don't matter, no one cares about them.... /s :D

Why would companies bother to make trailers, since no one cares anyway.

18% of people played female Shep. Safe to say ME:A will be marketed with a male lead. It makes more sense in terms of trying to sell the game.

They could also use an image like this:
MEA_small.png

Hmm... if I saw an image like that on the box art, I'd probably expect the females in the game would have ultra-hyper-exaggerated-feminized mannerisms and animations, and put it on my nope list.

That pose is ridiculous.

maybe it should be less diverse.

genderless full combat player character (or none at all) in trailer only.

Can immediately think of three examples, and they all were effective. (halo, TF2, DA:O

Guys, how about we wait for more than one short trailer before we start getting outraged, hm?

If gender isn't such an issue, then why Bioware, or any other company that has games with gender options, are so persistent on focusing on dude protagonists only? To attract male buyers because they think only with a dude in trailers, they'd be interested in the game? So that means if it was a woman instead, they wouldn't be interested? Okay.

But when I want to see a woman instead, "i take a non-gendered issue and make it all about the gender".

Uhhhh...lots of games have gender-neutral marketing.

Define "these people". Do you mean the uptight social justice puritans who go to big universities to get brainwashed by illiberal progressive retards before going on to spout out more illiberal progressive (and actually sexist) garbage?

If that's the case, I would actually disagree. "Feminism" has been on a steady decline since the sixties. In the United States, anyway. I don't know if you're from here or if it's different in another country. Ever since women earned the legal right to equal pay in 1963 (aka long before these pay gap weenies were ever born), they've had less and less legitimate points to campaign for. Abortion rights were given to women nationwide in 1973, and I would argue that that is the final legitimate point that feminists have had, historically. Since then, it really has been incessant whining over trivial non-issues that affect literally nobody.

I'm dead serious about the non-issues thing too. The day that The Sun (the British tabloid paper) gets into legal trouble over their Page 3 pictures, or the day that news articles are written about "sexist air conditioning" (true story, I'll even provide you sources), are the days that everybody should realize that these people are jokes. Miserable, unfunny jokes that need to leave the civilized world alone.
