2001: A Space Odessey is my favorite movie. For years I was mystified by the brilliant, interpretive ending that made little sense without context; the monolith, the room, the star child.
Then I read the novel, released at the same time through a collaboration between Kubrick and Sagan. It explains, in Sagan's classic clinical prose, the reason behind every muddled point that the film stylized so ethereally. It was revealing; it was a bit of a let-down. I liked discussing the minutiae of symbolism that Kubrick portrayed, listening to others' thoughts was fascinating. After the Sagan reveal, I was awash in the cold glare of The Truth. Again, a bit of a let down.
This data mining saga reminds me of that. As jaded and cynical as we all are of Bioware and PromotionLords and [insert grievance here], an actual surprise would have been nice.
As an actual Real Life Scientist (I'm an oceanographer), I'll never discount the expansion of new beneficial knowledge. But this whole revelation, like learning that Dave got hyperadvanced by aliens to colonize the planets (except for one of Saturns moons), is a bit disappointing. So a sincere thanks for both the information and the let-down.
(That was a bit dramatic but I'm on my like 15th miller lite so I'm a little weepy)
