The leak mentions the ship will be named Tempest, which means one of two things if accurate. One, that we aren't part of the military since it isn't following the established naming scheme where Frigates are named after battles, Cruisers named after cities, Dreadnoughts named after mountains, and Carriers named after famous people. Or two, it is a new class of military ship and thus following a new naming scheme. Maybe this scheme revolves around natural disasters like tempest, hurricane, monsoon, etc. If the latter, personally I think it fits something between frigates and cruisers like destroyers pretty well since like those storms those ships would be quick and deadly. 

 

Another possibility is that whatever Arkcon is will have cut all former ties to Milky Way organizations and will use its own unique naming conventions for ships.

Never occurred to me. That's a rather interesting theory regarding the ship's name.

Just thinking out loud here... in terms of length from small to large...

Corvette --> Frigate --> Destroyer --> Cruiser --> Battlecruiser --> Battleship

There are other things such as light, medium, and heavy, but this is basically what the ship hierarchy is.

There are also specialty warships like submarines and carriers, but yeah that's the hierarchy of "surface ships with big guns".

That's quite possible. I would count that as in the former example since if that's the case we aren't in the military but are part of a paramilitary organization or the security force of a civilian organization.

I am dreaming of a small frigate where I only have a small cabin, lots of tools to work with my new Mako and stuff, a small corner for my workouts and a cockpit, where Chew... me and my pilot usually sit with a slice of space pizzaz in our laps.

I think because the ship needs to be fast to get in and out of system it will probably still be a frigate. They can still make it a bit bigger than the SR-2 instead of giving us a cruiser. 

Um, why bigger?  The SR2 was 90% open space and damned few bunks.

Bring back the orginal size/shape of the SR1 because it 'felt' right in size.  Oh, and give it a bigger gas tank.

That's because they didn't take full advantage of the space available, they could do some really cool stuff with it if they did.
