We know that the Dragon Age writers are subtle and mischievous, particularly when it comes to foreshadowing. They included a handful of unique valuables in Trespasser, with detailed descriptions, all found around the Winter Palace. These items are not random, and were clearly put there for a reason. They're oblique clues to where the story is going next.

Below are the descriptions of each puzzling item, with my fumbling attempts at solving some of them.

[Edit] The other thing this could be is a hint about the followers in the next game: an Orlesian, a Chantry type, someone from the Anderfels or a Grey Warden, an elf, and so on.

Pieces of a broken mask found inside a velvet bag. What's left of the mask is covered in green jewels and eagle feathers. A scrap of paper inside the bag reads simply "Try again."

The mask is Orlais. It is broken.

A bag of caprice coins, discs minted for nobility to throw into fountains. They are stamped with a lion on one side and the Chantry's sunburst on the other.

Indicating either an alliance between Orlais (the lion) and the Chantry, or the opposite.

A crumpled silk napkin with some words inked in the corner. They're so smudged by wine stains, the only ones still readable are "There was once a man from Hosseberg."

Hosseberg is the capital of the Anderfels. Three notable things about that: (1) the Anderfels border Tevinter; (2) it is the location of Weisshaupt, the Grey Warden headquarters; (3) people from the Anderfels are called ‘Anders’. The line is a version of the old limerick ‘There once was a man from Nantucket’.

Anekerj Halffer: A Diverse Catalogue of Treasures: Billing itself as "The Most distinguished retailer of fine goods and novelties to the rich since 7:86 Storm," this booklet is filled with woodcuts of strange trinkets ("the world's best articulated everite backscratcher"), complicated-looking devices ("The only triple-decker carriage with Orzammar-designed wheel-locks for smoother braking") and speciality items ("be the first to enjoy the amazing cooling properties of drakeskin lining in one's evening mask!").

This is the most interesting one. Anekerj Halffer is not a name in any language. It must be an anagram. The words that come out of it are very interesting, including: Fen’harel, Elf, Free and Jerk. I’ve yet to make a full phrase out of it.

This cravat is slightly the worse for wear and tear; however, the stitching is remarkably fine, and the gold of the cloth has a subtly expensive shimmer when it catches the light.

No idea.

A silver ring found in a fountain.

No idea.

A lacquered box containing five pots of blush, three jars of lipstick, a small but sturdy hairbrush, and dozens of brightly jeweled hairpins and ribbons. A note Affixed to the inside of the lid reads "A few supplies for emergencies, my petite! Love, mama."

No idea.

A slim bottle of Heartland Lodge cologne. It smells not unpleasantly of autumn leaves, loamy earth, and woodsmoke.

The Heartlands is a region of Orlais. A smell of woodsmoke there could be ominous…

Well this is disappointing. The writers go to the trouble of including all these little clues, and then I go to the (even greater and more heroic) trouble of pointing them out and providing my amazing and percipient insights. And then it all gets completely ignored by the unwashed masses of BSN. I've decided I'm like one of those geniuses who were ignored in their own lifetimes. Van Gogh. Thoreau, Galileo. And me. Just you wait, you'll see I was right, and then I'll have the last laugh, oh yes. Mwahahahaha...

...ahem. Bump

Actually this is very interesting. I missed most of those on my first Trespasser playthrough. I will be more observant on the next run. Who knows? Maybe I'll find something else that is truly odd and a precursor to the next game.

I didn't find these till my second run through, and thought they were little gifts or something since BW seemed to go to some effort with the descriptions. But alas, they weren't.....so you may be on to something OP.

I just assumed they were little easter eggs / references to the main game not the next game.

In DA2 we got the codex about Samson meeting with the warden Cory possessed and Sandals little prophecy, they've not been that subtle in the past.

I've found various "valuables" with descriptions on them throughout the Vanilla game as well.... what's the difference?

The notion that there's a Fen Harel anagram is a good one, since there's precedence. Maybe some or all of the following words are relevant.

There's also

Pair of Paddles
A pair of small wooden paddles with leather grips. Used for some manner of leisure sport. Presumably

I hung onto those damn things for the entire DLC because I couldn't figure out what they were for. Evidently, they were intended to troll the player.

Did the exact same things and reached the exact same conclusion :P Though now that I know Anekerj Halffer is a possible anagram I'm going to keep obsessing and looking for hidden meanings. So if it is just trolling then damn, they got me good.

Here's my take on some of them:

Broken mask: Either the end of The Game, or someone who lost it.

Silk napkin: A rich noble of some sort, a poet and/or layabout.

Catalog: Obvs, the Fen'Harel anagram. But I'm guessing there are elves who infiltrate society, as merchants for one thing.

Cravat: A 'golden' lining. Someone or even a group of people who have suffered misfortune.

Laqured box: Dress-up? A very feminine character? (Maevaris!?)

Cologne: Either earthiness or something gets lit on fire.

This is brilliant! The revelations brought to my attention by Solas made me forget these weird items I kept finding.

Having read this guide toward some really interesting in-game gems right before bed, I quietly left my "like" and stopped there.  Nothing intelligent to say came to mind.

But then I dreamed of my Inquisitor's new prosthetic:

Anekerj Halffer: A Diverse Catalogue of Treasures: Billing itself as "The Most distinguished retailer of fine goods and novelties to the rich since 7:86 Storm," this booklet is filled with woodcuts of strange trinkets ("the world's best articulated everite backscratcher"), complicated-looking devices ("The only triple-decker carriage with Orzammar-designed wheel-locks for smoother braking") and speciality items ("be the first to enjoy the amazing cooling properties of drakeskin lining in one's evening mask!").

Really, I had decided that once through Trespasser was enough until this you offered this highlight of things I missed the first time.  Thanks!

Those things bugged me so much the amount of times I tried to jump from the balcony onto the vine frame. I was sure they'd be relevant lol, but no.
