Yes, yes, yes, I know we have 100s of these kinds of threads already, but if you’re not interested, why open a thread with as obvious a name as this one? I don’t want you wasting your time any more than you want to waste your time. This is more a “what if” thread than a “gimmie what I want NOW!” one. Rather, use your imaginations and tell me how you would deal with some of the big reasons people say “no thank you” to the Inquisitor coming back. Just have fun, yeah? That’s all it’s about.
I’ve seen some really good for and against arguments against this. I would be interested in how you would deal with the Inquisitor returning as PC. These aren't all my thoughts, just the ones i can think of while being tired.
IMPORTANT NOTE: My ideas are based solely on the premise that Solas is going to be our main antagonist, but also on my own fantasies. I’m not now giving the word of God, so please don’t accuse me of doing so.
The hand
Spoiler
This is probably the most difficult thing to sort out, but it’s not impossible. We know prosthetics exist in Thedas, which also has magic and dwarven machines that re more advanced than we are. I see no problem in seeing a dwarf, such as Dagna or Bianca, make a fully functional arm for the Inquisitor. It could add some interesting game play mechanics too. Someone else came up with the idea to be able to upgrade it and make it fit a purpose (like healing, crowd control), or have it designed to give some awesome buffs to whatever specialisation you pick. I think that this would be all around amazing because 1) I have so much respect for people who overcome such things and 2) it would in no way take away from the Inquisitor’s loss.
Former companions and LI’s
Spoiler
Well, this is also tricky, I think. I personally wouldn’t expect people from the past to have too much content in future games. However, I would like to further explore the consequences of the Inquisitor’s actions with their friend. Rather than a mention of them here and there, it would be cool to have to help Cassandra fix an issue with the Seekers and spend a few intimate moments with her. Sera could still be our helpful red Jenny and give us quests that will help shape us, and she can gather info on any people we would be dealing with. Granted this with be much easier with some than others, but it would not be impossible. The end sort of hints they are in contact with each other. Even spirit Cole’s epilogue sort of hints he will be near where the pain is the “worst”. No doubt this is referring to our new place.
Starting off
Spoiler
Well, I think it would be really cool for the opening cinematic to start off at Haven. It would be a nice way to recap the previous game and give a nice idea of where we are going. It could also let us know what the Inquisition has been up to in however long is between both games, which given Solas’ warning, isn’t long.
New companions
Spoiler
We need them, no doubt about it. Single pringle Inquisitor’s should also have some new LI’s. New companions can, in fact, help us explore our relationships with our previous ones. Imagine explaining to a slave why Dorian is just the most wonderful person ever, or telling a mage that there are lots of “Cullen’s” out there. Or telling someone how you hate Blackwall for his lies and are glad he is gone. It would open up so many opportunities. All in all, romance content was spread out in Inquisition. Balancing the open world with the story and developing ties to our new and former companions would be awesome. It will make building relationships in the past so much more rewarding.
I think it would be cool to have one of Dorian’s people join us. No doubt he is keeping his ears to the grindstone about Solas. For those who didn’t recruit Dorian, his friend could take the role. (I know the name, just not how to spell it). As an add one, i think it would be nice for those who flirted with Scout Harding to be able to romance her as the Inquisitor
Tevinteriness
Spoiler
I disagree that our Inquisitor has no connection the events that will take place there. The Inquisitor knows stuff that could shatter Tevinter’s pride. They know that the Qunari have been planning to invade the South since they saw the Breach. They know what Solas has planned, and what his plans will cost the world. They also “may” know of Flemeths desire for “revenge”. With some of the plots that have been hinted at, the Inquisitor can in fact draw all of these stories to a satisfactory conclusion. In my opinion, with all the Inquisitor knows, staying in the South would not be their course of action.
New players
Spoiler
Forgive my harshness here, but I don’t think “core” players should be…shall we say…”penalised” because of the newcomers. Obviously, I don’t want to make it so they CAN’T come and enjoy the games, but I don’t think they should be a “focus” of it. This is making me sound like a ******, so let me share an anecdote. I have recently converted 2 of my friends to DA. Sadly, my Origins is broken, so they started at Inquisition. Well, having completed it they came at me with a never ending list of questions, one of the biggest being “why was my elf shocked at whatever Solas is?” When I explained the lore of the dread wolf, the got really excited and have contemplated buying a PS3/Xbox 360 so they can play Origins and 2 (I told them to read the Wiki). The difference in how rewarding that bombshell was after they had known the original lore was nothing short of amazing.
Consequences
Spoiler
People want their choices to matter, but they usually have no effect until the next game comes along. I would like to see the consequences of our Inquisitor’s adventure to come back and bite them in their ass, rather than have a new PC have to correct something the Inquisitor caused.
A big one here is how the hunt for Solas plays out. Some extra missions that differ depending on whether or not you disbanded the Inquisition would be really nice. Personally, had I a choice, I would add some unique bonuses for each path (like armour and such).
It would also be really fun to be wracked with indecision on how to deal with Solas. Right now I want to redeem him, but it would be cool if I had to question that. He’s going to be doing stuff that I just could never agree with, but at the same time I think he might still help out the Inquisitor. Even if it’s for his own ends, to make me have to genuinely think about what I should do would be so much fun.
Dual Protagonist
Spoiler
I myself am personally not a fan of this idea, but i have no idea why. Just being short sighted i'm sure. I guess we could be a new PC for most of it and switch to the Inquisitor at set points. Personally, i think there are more weaknesses in this approach than strengths. I think that my biggest worry is the amount of work and resources it might take, and am pretty sure it will go one way or the other (i.e. New PC does everything)
Reasons people did not like the Inquisitor
Spoiler
- For the leader of a big force, they did an awful lot of "do this do that, place that there" quests
- Some people found the bland and uninteresting (i don't see how, but hey. Diversity)
-Race seldom mattered, and people treated a Qunari the same as a human. (I thought this made some sense, given the situation of the game)
- Everything went very right for them, so choices were less intense, and less rewarding
- Could not be a jackass and let the world burn (an actual complaint i have seen many times...)
- Aggressive was not really aggressive, funny was not as funny as Hawke
Someone in one of the other threads argued that bringing the Inquisitor back in another game would mean ruining the romance option, but I disagree. I think this would be an amazing opportunity for the devs to take the romance option one step further and have a relationship story arc option instead for those players with romanced characters.

Bringing them back and having the opportunity to speak of it as a player would also be a bonus. A few well placed questions and different answers beats a "yeah, they're alive" thing any day. At the end of Inquisition we know our friends are off on their own agendas, but they can still be involved in the hunt, so would be nice to see them show up.
Personally I want a glowing fade arm for my knight enchanter soo badly.
For companions, I think Dorian will be our returning party member, I would love to see Servis (from the Hissing Wastes) become a party member too.
For everyone else I think we will get letters based on the world state we upload.
Cullen won't be back because he can potentially be dead, same with Iron Bull, Sera is off being a Red Jenny, Vivienne, Liliana, and Cass can all be divine so they won't be back. Varric is viscount of Kirkwall.
That right there opens up the whole roster to new people and potential LIs.
It would be nifty to start off showing the Inquisitor receiving a writ from Divine Victoria starting a shadow organization to hunt down Solas. Then traveling to Tevinter where Dorian meets us and tells us what has been going on.
I don't want the Inquisitor back as a protagonist but I do headcanon a functioning metal arm that's usable in combat. Something Fullmetal Alchemist ish.

Well, if I planned to bring Inquisitor back as protagonist, I'd say all previous romances should get some content, which is not limited by sending letters. If Cullen is dead, fine (and romanced Cullen never dies anyway), if not, he has to have some significant presence for romanced Inquisitors at least. Same with Bull. Also, there has to be possibility for break ups (probably excluding those who married their LI in Trespasser). Dorian can be a new companion or adviser and the player can continue romance with him, or start a new one, if they didn't romance him in previous game (or are a new player).
New companions should include Maevaris and Harding (now romanceable) at the very least.
I'd only be happy about the Inquisitor returning as a playable character if it was in a limited non-combat role in a dual protagonist situation. Say, we perform covert acts and negotiations as the inquisitor in limited scenes, the effects of which we see as the new protagonist. That I think could prove a very interesting dynamic.

And how would they do that when most of those romanced characters won't be there?

How would it ruin the romance option exactly? You can already have multiple romances across all 3 games of ME. Just have it play like that, but with more punishing consequences should you choose to cheat. The old LI doesn't even need to have a big role for him/her to still be the Inquisitor's romance.
Besides it works for me anyway, I didn't even romance anyone. I thought my Inquisitor was pretty badass after walking in there with one arm and dropping the mic(book) and be like "stay out of my way b*tches!" and walking out like a champ.
Which brings me to the arm problem. I'd say go to Kirkwall, have Varric ask Bianca to fashion a metal arm for him. Basically go Fullmetal Alchemist on that arm.
The Inquisitor could end up with a 100% Silverite-made arm enchanted (because Sandal is also there) with lyrium so he can Iron Man blast people
If Bioware is feeling extra adventurous, they could make the Inquisitor a party member. Of course they'd have to work out the personality bit, but no one is ever going to get anyone's Inquisitor exactly right. It's just the whiners are extra loud about it that's why it turns into such a big deal.
The Inquisitor is pretty easy to bring back considering they have such an neutral personality. Not to mention I remember something about BW saying that Solas romance storyline wasn't over. But then again, I don't expect the Inquisitor to come back any more then a big boss quest giver. I don't see them coming back as an fighter unless they somehow magically restore their lost arm.
IF we had the option of bringing back the Inquisitor...I want to be able to bring back Hawke as well. Choose a NEW PC, the Champion, or the Inquisitor...heck, throw in the HoF as well. They don't have a defined personality? Now you can do so...through your choices. It'd require a ton of work, sure, but if they are going to bring back Inqy, might as well throw in the others as well.
The Inquisitor COULD have a prosthetic hand, which would limit their options. You COULD start out on a quest to have a new hand forged for them...a lost Temple or ruin that has a mystical item that Dagna could shape into a new hand. New abilities, or such. Even if you used Hawke, a new PC, or the Warden, it could be the same quest, just with a different result at the end. The Sha-Brytol had lyrium armor etched into their skins, and Golems are dwarves bonded to lyrium armor though a wonderfully painful process. A new arm IS feasible. IF they wanted to go that route...
But a new hero is more likely. Still, I'd love to see the Inquisitor back in some form.

some of the people who are concerned are concerned because they didn't like the options in DAI and don't want to be saddled with them for another game. When they complained, they were told "well, wait for DA4 then..."
I would love the inqusitior to come back again it would just feel and play better also the Hand can be fixed, we have Dagna there's magic and endless possibilities for that. Also about the starting at level one wouldn't be so bad and if they made it that we got some skill points at the start I would be fine with that. I really would like the relationship with the inqusitior and solas to continue I would like the decision we made in trespasser to continue to DA:4 other wise there was no point in that.
Nah, it might be a good idea to bring him as a companion, but not as a PC. As they said in the epilogue, Solas knows how they work, thus they need someone new to handle him.

I added a "dual protag" thing in my OP. As it says there, i am not a fan of the idea. Feel free to discuss it, because i'm open to the idea.

This is how I'd want them back and the only way I'd want them back.
I would rather just play as the inqusitior then playing as a dual protags but I would be happy if that happens only if we can control the inqusitior and decide what they say and do at that time.

Same, but i can't help but think it would be overly complicated. And, considering Solas is the reason most of us want them back (not limited to romancers BTW) we could end up being 2 people at the exact same time. I just can't see it working well.
