Build advice:
- [Mass Effect 1] Start of the Journey: Single Playthrough Builds by Simbacca.
- Basic Soldier Leveling Guide by capn233.
The Soldier's best power is Immunity. Both the Commando and Shock Trooper specializations * improve the cooldown of immunity. Master Immunity + Immunity bonus from Shock Trooper/Commando specialization + at least one really good cooldown armor mod = you can always have Immunity activated.
From there, I would just switch between Anti-Personnel/Shredder Ammo (for organic enemies) and Armor-Piercing/Tungsten Ammo for synthetic enemies to maximize damage. (Note that Husks are considered organic enemies).
Personally, I like to focus on armor (to get Heavy Armor as soon as possible) and then Immunity, and the Soldier passive (for health regen early game) and play it like a cover shooter until I get the specialization. Pistols and shotguns are at least decent early, unlike Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles which suck. Assault Rifles get better at rank IV when they gain accuracy. Sniper Rifles get better, but you also need to invest a lot of points in the Sniper Rifle talent tree to make them really good.
investing 3 points into Charm or Intimidate on Eden Prime is good for getting a decent (for early game) Pistol and a grenade mod.
* Just in case you were unaware, when you reach level 20 the Luna VI mission unlocks. You will have to travel to another system and Admiral Hackett will give you the mission. Complete the mission to unlock the specialization. Note that you should travel to a system you have already travelled to otherwise Hackett may inform you of a different mission that is available in that system.
If you want to unlock all the crates on Eden Prime, invest in Kaiden's Electronics and Decryption on Eden Prime. After that it does not really matter. Liara is good squadmate for the Soldier but she is always a good squadmate because biotics are overpowered in Mass Effect 1.

By late game you can get away with chosing squad mostly on personality and banter.
In general in ME1, I don't disagree with the squad selection "meter" where you more or less balance combat, tech and biotics. For Soldier, Liara and Tali is a solid squad throughout the game in all missions. You can swap out Tali for Garrus or Kaidan later game since it is more likely you can have maxed electronics and decryption with a wider variety of squadmates.
Liara is the best biotic squadmate, but you can get away with Kaidan since he has Lift, and Neural Shock is pretty good against Krogan enemies and organics on side missions. Wrex doesn't quite fit as well with a Soldier since his main role is tanking and some mild CC with Throw.
Ash makes the least sense with soldier, but for some side missions I like running an all Sniper squad with her and Garrus. Espionage Probe, for example. Or Listening Post Alpha.

Use Immunity and get the specialization that gives yoour Immunity more power.
Use Squads with Lift and Warp, forget about Tech companions (unless you are using Kaidan).

At level 60, you can walk through the game without taking damage. Insanity mode isn't too hard, for me anyways. I've done it a few times just bullrushing through the game using Ashley and Kaidan until Virmire and then using Ashley and Garrus for the rest of the game
The only suggestion I got is to take your time and stay in cover unless moving to another position.

Just use cover more. I think the only real snag are those damn missle drones... especially indoors/closed spaces. Take your sweet, sweet time on them.. For me anyways. edit: Wait.. looks like you did it. Good job.
