Qunari faction: one hit kill attack with no animation?

I rolled a bunch of games against Qunari this weekend (insert gripe about not being able to choose factions here) and had a bunch of deaths that I don't know the cause of.  I would be fighting normally, at near full or near full health, then suddenly I'd be dead, but I wouldn't see anything hit me.  It would happen when I wasn't even directly engaged with an enemy; either I'd just be approaching an enemy to start a new battle, or I'd have just finished one enemy and be moving to the next.

I don't think any of these deaths were the result of lag, but even if some were, it happened enough times that I doubt all of the deaths were from lag.  I checked Wavebend's Qunari thread, and I don't see any attacks listed that describe these sudden, massive damage spikes.  Can anyone offer any insight as to just what the heck was happening?

The damage received is spirit damage, isn't it?

I don't remember the damage type.  Are you thinking saarebas are responsible for this?  I don't think they were around for at least some of the deaths, but I could have simply not seen them.

I heard something about a shock or spell or something that can hit you after killing one of the enemies? I have had 2 instances where I went from full guard to either full on dead, or really close to it over the weekend.

Kind of lame, I don't mind dying due to my own negligence (I actually do, but I know who to blame in those circumstances) but being one shotted due to my success against an opponent in a manner I can't seemingly mitigate or avoid is kind of game breaking.

Plus as a Promotion Intern, it's somewhat disheartening and embarrassing to be instant wiped in front of my fans and admirers. How can I get Minute Maid to put a logo on my Templar if I am eating dirt for some as yet inexplicable reason. I don't even want to speculate what negative impact that potentially has with the coveted 25-30 demographic, or you know, the ladies...

Happened to me and 1 other person. FC 2nd room right after you kill the 3 dudes at the front of the map.  Both of us fighting the next spawn, no saarebas around and 2 of us went from full health to 0 with no idea what hit us.

Yep, been having this mystery damage too, with and without Saarabas.

Come to think of it... Shock Troopers seem to have been around and recently killed every time. Could they have some kind of poorly signposted revenge bomb?

Haven't encountered too many Qunari to have too much to say, but I noticed something similar the other day, I'd received a number of hits from spearmen & was sundered about 4 times...how much does your armour get reduced by anyway? & after killing one of the shock troopers, suddenly I'm quaffing a health potion to stay alive, most odd.

Happened to me too, two different games over the weekend. Died both times.

Yeah, this happened to me a few times as well. Went from full guard to dirt nap in the blink of an eye, with no living enemy in sight.

I've also had the qunari commander "summon" me from clear on the other side of the map, and with no LOS (the other three had him contained in a room with only one entrance and he was toward the back of the room.) To poor salt in the wound, he would then stun-lock and then one- or two-shot me right after teleporting me to his location. Sounds legit.

Yeah it has happened to me few times as well. Suddenly you just go from full to down state. It really is confusing as to what is causing it. At first I thought it was me who was just careless enough, then I figured it was lag but once I had few examples of neither, I realized that it is quite another beast all together. Truly strange indeed.

Happened to me in zone 5 and was startling.  I'd been pretty much dominating all game with no risk or injury.  Then, final wave, in the blink of an eye -- dead.  I could not have been more surprised.

It was the shield guys, when their shields start to flash they store damage ( I think only damage they take from the front, not sure). When the shield starts to flash intensely he is about to deal that damage to an aoe around him. I am almost sure this is the case, but I don't have someone to test with.

Very glad to see this posted.  Had a game with this yesterday, our team had just killed the last of a spawn, the next spawn was a long ways away and not aggor'd and bam, two dead (including me).  It also looked like an electrical field kind of thing like you get when the storm dragon is putting the lighting circles around you.

There was no Saarebas in the next spawn either.

(Speaking of which, does anyone find wave 4 tougher than boss man Qunari wave 5?)  Two Saarebas at the end of the 4th wave and then one of their slam brutes was nasty.)

I think it has to do with some kind of damage storage ability.  It happens quite often with my Reaver.   One second I was full health, killed something I am in the red.

Their shields flash?  I've never seen that.  Do they turn any colour in particular, or is just the normal ambient lighting only brighter?  Do you have any idea how large of an AoE the attack has, and/or whether or not it will still go off after they die?  Considering the massive HP disparity between players and enemies, reflected damage seems like really questionable enemy design.

Encountered the Qunari for the first time last night and noticed this too. Killed a lone saarebas with the team and they headed off to kill the next mob group, several halls away, while I moved toward a treasure room door we had passed. Once I was a good 10 strides away, I got destroyed by four or five fast ticks of 270+ spirit damage.

Pretty annoying, gotta admit.

Have had this a few times too. No dot ticks, not near a recently killed enemy, full health plus guard and then instantly dead.

The time I remember most clearly, there was nothing to suggest a lag spike or anything like that, I just dropped dead in the middle of playing. Wrote it off as a weird bug with the Qunari faction or something, but it seems it's too common for that.

Had this happen over the weekend vs Qunari.  It only happened once though, full health then BAM!, down to a sliver of health.  Had no idea where the damage came from.

I think it only happens to melee range and single target.  I remember there were other "weaker" classes around me and they didn't lose health or die.   The damage is similar to when you step into the one of those multiple circles on the ground thingy.   I learn how to avoid stepping on graffiti, but these got no graffiti. :P

I had something weird like this happen over the weekend while leveling my alchemist.  I killed a shield guy, that was frozen by flask of frost, and then proceeded to take 4 ticks of physical damage along with the legionnaire next to me.  I have had the crazy spirit DoT ticks as well, but this one was new to me.
