Completed DA:I as a Rift-Mage on Normal.
Planning to start a new play through as a Rogue Archer (likely Assassin) on Nightmare shortly.
Was wondering what your preferred bows are (either found or crafted) for early-mid game?

Without Black Emporium, etc etc to get T3 schematics, the Bane of Red Crossing bow is a good bow for early game. Easy to get too. Just unlock the Astrariums in the Storm Coast and voila! It's my go-to bow if I'm unlucky with schematics drops, as I don't like crafting high-end stuff in early game. Kinda makes the game too easy.
That said, crafted gear at T1 is still slightly better if you focus on crit chance/crit damage, I think. But seeing Immolate pop every fight is just fun and the difference in the beginning is negligible. ![]()
Excellent! Thank you.
Is the Golden Nug available for everyone? In which case, get a great schematic early on passed on from your high level. Even crafted with tier 1 mats, it's going to be fantastic.

I believe it's only available if you've completed the game at least once (without DLC). But to be honest, using high-level schematics feels like cheating. Especially if the OP is running his first Nightmare run. It trivializes a big part of the game (early and midgame mostly). Kind of defeats the point of running on Nightmare mode. ![]()
If it's like the 27th run, then yeah, it's not a big problem to do it. But on the first ever Nightmare run? Nah, just play the game normally to get the best experience. ![]()
Thanks all for the suggestions. So it seems like The Bane of Red Crossing and a visit to the BE will be good options for my early-mid game.
For this run (my first in Nightmare) I'll not be using the Golden Nug. I want to play from a zero base, going slowly and ensuring I'm choosing the optimal gear available to me at each level. But I am planning to use the Nug for my next run (tackling the trials).

Just a quick note; I highly suggest turning on the 'Even Ground' trial in any case. This prevents you from massively overleveling zones (which will happen if you are even remotely like me and want to do every zone in a playthrough). It basically means all mobs you encounter will be at least your level while higher level zones will still outlevel you. But never again will you enter a zone, only to find that you're one-shotting everything in sight.
To me, this should've been default in the vanilla game. Non-scaling zones/enemies is baaaaaaad.
@Realyn I agree, the levelling trial is great, I'm a completionist so I tend to finish Hinterlands at lvl 11 or 12 which means the next 2-3 zones are not even remotely interesting challenge wise.
+1 and if you still can't afford BE by the time you are ready to do WEWH, you can get Trepanner's Requittal at the end of WEWH. That's a step up from Bane, though not by much. Depending on when you do WEWH, you might start crafting better Tier 2 bows just from schematics you loot. The Rare Sniper Bow is also a good bow for mid level, I usually get is as a random drop in Emerald Graves. Thanks all for the suggestions. One of the trials rewards was a bow called 'Bow Artifice'- which had a built in masterwork that had a chance to surround your target with elemental mines. I was scum saving- so I did not take it- but it looked pretty good- had DPS in the area of 180 or so- if I remember.
