I'm pretty solidly on the guns are better camp.  but in all fairness you aren't necesarrily a battlefield soldier.  Because silencers aren't movie silent taking people down with other tools is fairly useful. Now this isn't a stealth game either so I only see it in special cases of tech skills or biotics that somehow get you in close and allow you to deliver attacks equal to a guns damage. Or a krogan, I mean krogan sentinel is fairly awesome.

Putting it into Shadowrun terms since people make the same argument there.  Its one thing to say guns always trump melee today, but when you can magically charge your fist to the point you can kick open bank vaults while weaving through a hail of bullets its not exactly a weak option.  Whether its fantasy magic or space magic, you kind of always have a out to explain it in setting.  Because magic doesn't have to make sense in todays terms, it only has to make sense in the context of how magic works in that setting.  and biotics than can lift krogan or burn down atlases probably has the power to punch through skulls, maybe even more effectively than guns.

How many times has this guy actually brought a knife to a gunfight? I'm going to guess 0.

Hokey religions and ancient katanas are no match for a good Carnifex at your side.

The video's a spoof btw.

I will say, though, however unrealistic they may seem, I thought the melee mechanics in ME3 were pretty fun. So, I'm willing to buy into some pseudo scientific explanation that omni-blades and super space katanas have some sort of tech built into them that allows them to cut through barriers and shields faster than projectiles.

I liked the omni tool weapons, and while I never used them, the bayonet attachments. The omni tool weapons never bothered me because they don't replace the firearms. Shepard would just need to shift the rifle or pistol to the other hand. I think those are fairly plausible once you suspend disbelief for the lore surrounding how they work.

I wouldn't be too keen on characters running around with swords or war hammers though because they'd require setting the rifle aside. Having said that, I think the series already crossed that bridge in ME3 with the Phantoms and hammer-wielding Krogan (MP). I'd be surprised if there wasn't something similar in Andromeda. I'm just not that crazy about it.

Well the phantom does shoot or throw or something attacks at you while at range.(she usually kills me at range)  She has some biotic doom sword though so she tries to close.  My issue is there is no lore reason how that really works.  Invisible part cool, if she biotic charged again cool.  I have 90% dmg reduction because I move like a ninja, and i'm wondering how that works.  I guess it could be some modified biotic barrier thing.  While I can happily shrug my shoulders and say space magic, I'd like a space magic explanation.  can see moments into the future like Jedi is an explanation, biotics and tech don't really explain dodge bullets.

Okay now I'm sold on this idea.
