The one I'd consider not recruiting is Vivienne. She really, really, really grinds my gears.

I haven't gotten around to it yet, though, it feels weird not snatching up all the companions I can. Gotta catch 'em all, as a wise man once said.

I only planned to play Inquisition once (too long for multiple playthroughs), so I recruited everyone on the basis that I probably wouldn't do a second go around. If I did play again, I'd probably skip Sera, but everyone else was at least interesting.

I recruited everyone. As others mentioned, there's no real bad consequence of recruiting particular members. You're basically just agreeing to reduce the scope of the game.

I would be far more weary if I was told there would be negative consequences of accepting certain people, or if there were only 6 places and 8 people to fill them with. But ultimately I like the way it is.

Vivienne, depending on if my character agrees or disagrees with her viewpoints on mages.

And I really don't like Blackwall, but I need a reason for my characters to not invite him to join.

My dalish usually don't recruit him if the warden in DA:O sided with the werewolves for instance. They heard the stories and don't trust/like wardens.

Except I really, really love arguing pro-mage with Vivienne so I recruit her anyways, just so I can ****** her off. And she did kill that one dude when I told her too..sooo, there is that as well.

I really enjoyed the companions, I do most bioware games, and always had trouble deciding who to bring with me on missions.

Sera bugged me, but that's because she reminded me of myself. Geez, that was hard to put up with ha!

I'm not sure if that thought is incredibly exciting or terrifying that there's a Sera-ish person running around in the real world...:)

On my first ever playthrough I kicked out Sera, first time in any Bioware game I've done that! She bugged me from the start, I couldn't understand a word she was saying, she disagreed with me on pretty much everything, but I wasn't going to kick her out for it. Then she killed someone I was talking to without my say so, I hadn't made up my mind on what I wanted to do and she killed him, I wasn't keeping someone around who couldn't follow basic instructions haha.

I try not to kick her out anymore and I think I'm getting better at understanding her when she speaks, but we hardly get along still.

Recruited all and didn't kick out anyone, but Sera was super close to being kicked out. Sera, Viv, Iron Bull and Cole I didn't really use that much in parties.

Depends on the Inquisitor. My Cadash recruited everyone and nobody left until Solas. Adaar also let everyone join, but he ended up sending Blackwall north with the exiled Grey Wardens. (Which is a hilariously poor decision, but it's not like he knew the truth. He was just trying to help! He thought the Wardens needed some sensible leadership!) Both of them were happy to accept assistance from anyone who wanted to join up.

Trevelyan didn't recruit Dorian (didn't trust a Tevinter mage) or Blackwall (she was a tank herself) and ended up getting in a big fight with Sera and throwing her out.  Lavellan didn't recruit Vivienne (opposite positions on mage freedom) or Iron Bull (didn't want a Qunari spy anywhere near the Inquisition.)

So the only optional companion I've always finished the game with is Cole. I think my next Inquisitor will decide that he's creepy and not accept him into the fold, though. Probably going to play someone who doesn't pick up Sera, at some point. I try to have all possible outcomes somewhere in my world states, including 'this person was never recruited.'

I recruit everyone. The only time I kicked someone out was in my first game, Sera. It was her using the Inquisition against a noble. After it was done, back at Skyhold we got into an argument. One click after another and I kicked her out by accident. I can't stand Vivienne's uppity attitude, she stays home, never adventures with me.

Dont bother recruiting Vivienne, Sera and blackwall. 9 Companions is too damn many and honestly a waste of time. Hell i find even 6 to be stretching it. It should have been 3 companions 3 advisers thats it and instead use the money saved to add to the overall game and make it better. You can bet Indra Verma would have costed quite a bit to voice Vivienne.

besides with all of them its a pain to run around skyhold to talk to all of them. 6 at best and that includes advisers as well. Ny number beyond is wasted.

Just to see how things shake out, I've occasionally chosen to tell Sera, Blackwall, Iron Bull, Cole and Vivienne to take a hike or never brought them along in the first place. Dorian is one of my favorites of the new companions, so I always keep him around and befriend him as well, although I've only romanced him a single time.

I refused Iron Bull and Sera for obvious reasons. Sera is an annoying headache and Iron bull is a Qunari and overall a terrible, cringe-inducing character.

I kicked Dorian out because of his TI bias. You support the Chantry or face exile.

Kicked Cole out because I refuse to work with demons and spirits.

I kept the others. Mostly ran with Cass, Blackwall, and Vivvenne

I recruit everyone, whether it's in-character for my protag or not.

I once tried restricting recruitment in DAO, but it didn't last. Zevran makes the most sense to drop (since he just tried to kill you), but he's also my favourite character in DAO. If I'm going to break character to always recruit him, I might as well always recruit everyone. Since then, I keep everyone. Though sometimes I tell Anders to take a walk in DA2, if I'm playing a Hawke who really dislikes him.

That said, if there was an option to prevent Oghren from joining, I might take it.

I recruit everyone, even if I almost never take them out of Haven/Skyhold.

Although I'm not rescueing Blackwall from jail in my current playthrough. Never use him anyways.

The only character I have ever declined to recruit is Sebastian, and that was only because I wanted The Last Straw to play out a certain way for RP reasons. I actually liked everyone in DAI, so they all get at least some time in the party rotation, but there are some characters I travel with more than others due to utility.

I am too gutless and spineless  not to recruit - but I cannot abide Vivienne, Iron Bull, Blackwell and Sera.... I speed run any convos with them and do their quests holding my nose...Also find Josie incredibly annoying and try to avoid talking to her as well.

On the other hand I love Dorian, Cole, Varric, and Cassandra. Leliana, Cullen. Solas is a pompous a** but you gotto love that scoundrel.

One of the nice things about DA2 was that benching companions didn't really feel like that, because they all had their own business here and there and lived in their own spaces, with the exception of the live-in LI. So even if I don't particularly care for Sebastian, I can still recruit him but then just leave him to linger in the chantry and it doesn't make me feel like I'm not using my group properly.

I thought about not recruitiing Vivienne but she's too nice so i let her stay but pay much attention to her.

Uh, she's fully prepared to use her magic to kill someone, and is exactly the kind of mage that gives Tevinter a bad name, obsession with power and all. Not to mention she's a hypocrite, praising the circle system despite having politicked her way out of its restrictions.

She abuses her status and her power to get away with things that would get other mages tranquilled.

I recruit everybody. I don't kick anybody out, but I don't necessarily rescue Blackwall.

I didn't rescue Blackwall in one. I got into an argument and kicked Sera out after her personal quest in another. To my disappointment, I haven't had anyone get mad and leave on me. Maybe that will change on my last playthrough, with the 'Fair Weather Friends' modifier turned on.

I was thinking about not recruiting Sera on my second playthrough but honestly, after a while I began to understand what she said and what not and actually agreed on some terms so I just stopped caring. Usually though she's not a friend unless my quizzie is a human. But I've always recruited all of the companions and I've yet to kick one out, how does one even go about kicking someone out? I mean I've had lots of Disapproves but I've never been anywhere close to someone actually wanting to leave. . . . . I take that back, I'm pretty sure Solas wanted to ditch me after my human punched the living shiznit out of him.
