Combat wise i had most success with an inquisitor archer rogue with poisons long shot stealth and evade. Simple but very effective i play on hard and most battle were not too bad. The crits are big enough and then my aggro i just vanish i barely had to touch other members or use the tactical cam either.

My make up was tank blackwall, tank cassandra, and heal solas. All 3 of them are made for survival mostly and support but they still do decent damage. Only one playthrough so far on hard and this group has been working well. What worked for you?

4 mages with energy barrage and static cage equipped with Wraith Lovis to achieve 100% crit. Bosses would die so fast the game would glitch and not initiate the next phase of a quest. 4 archers was also good but only two of us could be Sins/Artificers. Tempest in tactical cam does some weird stuff with lightning flask; lightning flask then switch to non tempest party member = enemies would die quicker than 4 magi attacking.  Nightmare difficulty.

I am finally playing a warrior, I don't like it even with the toggled second ability changes.

Never kept a fixed team on my 2 normal playthroughs, variation was the spice.

When I decided to play nightmare, I decided on one sword and board (mostly Blackwall, though I brought Cassie for most of the rifts), and never used the Bull, not once. Sera as a rogue in all missions as soon as I got her; no more Varric, never used Cole, not even once.  Mages I would cycle through, the important thing was that they all had dispel and barrier.

Eventually, my main team became Blackwall, Sera and Dorian, a setup I found utterly versitile, with many AoEs, and a combination of "Stone fist" from inquisitor, "To the death" from Blackwall, "Spirit mark" from Dorian and "Lightining flask" from Sera to nuke strong targets; when I got a proper flanking angle, sometimes the damage would be comparable to a focus attack, but one I can spam.

My inquisitor was a rift mage, btw.

Sera, Dorian, and Cassandra--for the most part. It's a well-balanced and often hilarious party.

Sera Dorian and Cass along with my various mage inquisitors.  Sometimes I'll swap in Bull or Varric for variety.  But I can't be bothered with Cole, Blackwall, Solas or Vivienne.  If I  play as a  DW rogue my party is Cass/Bull, Dorian and depending if I need two mages or a second rogue or not Viv or Sera/Varric.

Cassandra, Varric and Iron Bull.

Only time I changed it was for the Oasis. I swap out Varric for Sera. Simply because Varric's constant banter, "We're done here right?" Got on my nerves.

My core team was Dorian and Cassandra.    Then if I played an archer I either drafted in Vivienne or Cole depending on the skills I wanted.    When I played a mage, it would be Sera or Cole.     I didn't use the tactical camera at all but let people get on with it, so my selection was based on how well they seemed to cope when left to their own devices.    Blackwall was a decent substitute for Cassandra but Iron Bull seemed to get hurt far too easily.    Ditto Solas and Varric.   May be I had the wrong build for them but Varric never seemed to know how to avoid getting hit.   On the whole for high level enemies my ideal team is Dorian, Cassandra and Vivienne with me as the archer of the party.   Between us we were practically unstoppable.

Since DA:2 I've found the "3 Mage 1 Warrior" party composition to be absolutely incredible in so many ways. Ultimate control of the battlefield and my Mages walk from the battle completely unscathed.

I usually roll 2 mages, 1 rogue, and 1 warrior just to have a full party of every class type. Varric is without a doubt my favorite and most optimal Rogue companion in Inquisition (crit chance and damage is insane on a properly upgraded Bianca).

I swap between Solas and Dorian when it comes to my second Mage in the party. Sometimes I'll swap Varric with Cole, because a properly spec'ed Cole is incredible. Cassandra is a constant.

My absolute favorite party compositions so far have been;

Knight Enchanter Mage Inquisitor

Solas

Dorian

Cassandra

or

Knight Enchanter Mage Inquisitor

Solas

Varric/Cole

Cassandra

my BOOM! Squad!

Quizzy - storm tree + knight enchanter

Dorian - fire and necro

Varric - love those elemental bombs

Cassandra - she's there to keep everything in one place while Quizzy and the boys blow them up.

Dagger assassin.

The new tier 4 daggers from Descent are ridiculous with master corrupting runes.

I dunno about "best", I think you can do well with just about any party.

My main teams for my first two pts:

KE mage

Cassandra - She is a rock wall.  None shall pass.

Cole - Priority stealth, and stab all the things.  Just craft him something with guard and there's no issue with squishyness.

Solas - support magic, Spirit and Rift trees

KE mage

Bull - best defense is a good offense times, can be squishy, but like Cole, just craft him something with guard-on-hit

Cole

Solas

and post-game for the same two:

KE mage

Cassandra

Cole

Dorian - Basically fills in the place Solas had in the party in these cases, so I give him Spirit tree, which isn't terribly out of place with the necro tree when you think about it

KE mage

Bull

Cole

Dorian

I generally prefer two mage, one warrior, and one rogue setups.

Blackwall as tank. Templar is a decent spec, but nothing beats the sheer, literal invincibility of a Champion.

Solas as supporting mage. He mostly used CC abilities, barriers and some fire mines to lay down the hurt. Vivienne replaced him after the endgame.

Varric. The passives at the end of the Artificier tree plus maxed Rain of Arrows = arrowy doom. I also found Compound Crossbow Arms that deal stupendous amounts of damage in the Descent DLC, and even more powerful Bianca arms in Trespasser. He was far and away the biggest provider of damage.

PC was a Storm focused KE.

My more casual setup was Cassandra, Solas and either Cole or Varric.

Cassandra, Blackwall & Cole

or

Blackwall, Bull & Cole

or

Cassandra, Dorian & Cole (I laughed so hard when I heard Dorian had drawn a 'flowers & bees' picture for Cole - and the boy's reaction...)

-----

I can't stand Sera so I never recruit her.  I flat out turned out Vivienne after the 1st playthrough and as for Solas, he was a cold fish before Trespasser but now I loathe him so I leave him to contemplate his 'art gallery'.

Before KE got nerfed it was KE inquisitor, Vivienne, and two tanks.
