Inquisitor: "Wait... are you-?... I didn't realize-"
Krem: "You didn't. Well, great. Now we can all talk about it."
The notion that Cremissius is an in-your-face transgender type is ridiculous... Seems a bit hypersensitive (about what? is there even an offense there to be taken?) to make more out of that aspect of his character than any character ever does in the game- including Bull and especially Krem himself who's clearly not keen on making anything out of it. You can pursue the matter further with Bull in one conversation, but otherwise it doesn't even come up. Don't pursue it and it's not even in your experience of the game. Or complain that there's not a romance option: at least then you'd sound better being worked up over his gender. The only ones not able to accept Krem for who he is and move on are players wanting to make more of it than there is. The storyline does so regardless.
In this interview with David Gaider himself on the subject he explains that they made Krem transgender only after first making him a fairly standard straight guy (like sooo many characters in the game otherwise) and then deciding he was "just kinda dull" and to add something more "interesting." I'd rather interesting than dull any day. "Interesting" is a high compliment in my vocabulary. If the whole transgender angle seems the only thing remarkable about Krem to some people, at least it's better than having made yet another a forgettable NPC, no? Obviously Krem is not the forgettable type or people wouldn't get worked up over him. Would it have been more acceptable if the character had been, say, missing an arm or really into birdwatching or tended to talk loudly? Would people then complain that he was "only about his missing arm?" Likely not- just as no one cares about other such quirks among other NPCs who have so little bearing on the main narrative of the DAverse. It's only that the quirk for Krem is being transgender that it's apparently somehow a touchy issue to some. Plus, according to Gaider, it was a challenge for the writers to not make that aspect of Krem's story as awkward or jarring an experience as with Serendipity in "Mark of the Assassin." I think they succeeded. The Chargers are supposed to be an eclectic bunch, so it fits well and also reflects solidly the maturity level of Bull and the organization he built.
All that interesting quirk adds is more color, something more to think about if you want, or at most adding new lore about the qunari. Aside from that Krem gets you more missions, adds more content to Bull's storyline, and is just another cool character to interact with as Bull's lieutenant. If anything I wish we could interact more with the rest of the Chargers as well and see them around more than in cutscenes, but what they gave us worked just fine.
Besides, Jennifer Hale voices him so well, who cares?
