Should BioWare not reveal characters sexual orientation before release?

No matter what BioWare does with romance in Andromeda people are going to complain. A lot. There's going to be people saying there shouldn't be any romance, there should be a lot less romance, and people will say there isn't enough. People are going to complain that there is too much pandering to minorities and others will complain there isn't enough.

I could care less about how many characters they make LIs and what their sexual preferences/genders are as long as it doesn't negatively effect the main game. What I do care about is that BioWare uses the characters' sexual orientations for marketing. BioWare puts LGBT characters in the game and apparently it's not supposed to be a big deal, but then why do they give away their sexual orientation before release? That should not effect a character AT ALL, how much you like or dislike them. I don't think it's something that should be revealed until you play the game, and same for if a character is romanceable. You shouldn't like a character more just because you know that you can sleep with them.

I think it takes away from a character that should be well-written regardless of sexual preferences and romanceability. You should play the game and then realize who you like and who you want to romance.

But that is just my opinion, thoughts?

Edit: I'll add this, which I posted on page 2.

I understand that quite a few of you like to know the characters orientation before release so you know "who to go for" when the game starts. I only wonder if that makes the experience more shallow for players. You are choosing who you will romance after a few released wisps of information, the character's looks, and their sexual orientation and gender. Would it not be a more fulfilling experience if you began friendships with these characters, started flirting with them, and then they begin to return your advances? Now I do understand that this is only my personal preference, but unfortunately it is not the only reasons that the pre-release of the sexual orientations bother me. I may be in the minority, but it has always come across as a bit exploitative to use a character's orientation as a selling point. These characters are creations that hopefully have full and developed arcs, and their orientation shouldn't be a defining characteristic of them unless it has majorly effected their lives at some point. When orientations are revealed prior to release chaos ensues over whether or not BioWare is stereotyping, or pandering, or not pandering enough. I believe even the negativity will do wonders for a game's marketing because the controversy gets many people to discuss the game. However much I enjoy the BioWare romance arcs, or do not as it may be, I find that the pre-release of sexual orientations has always rubbed me the wrong way especially for a company that is claimed to be as forward thinking as BioWare.

If the characters have set sexualities then I like knowing about them beforehand so I can plan ahead the characters I'll make to romance them. For the players that enjoy the romance content, the different romances each playthrough are what add the most replayability.

I don't think it's a big deal to just reveal that info. If they're going to showcase characters at all, they might as well.

Only if people who identify as LGBT have a problem with it.

I don't think the opinions of people who are uncomfortable with gay people in the game should be given much consideration. As much as some might deny it, that is what really would be at the heart of any complaints about Bioware advertising LGBT characters, unless those players were also complaining about straight romance options being advertised.

I'd rather they didn't reveal the LI's at all beforehand and just let people find out when they play.

I don't think of it as that big of a deal so I don't know why you wouldn't release it.

but then, I think much of the BSN is far too obsessed with the romance portion of the games despite how small of a percentage of the actual content they are.

It would probably be somewhat easy to guess anyway based on looks / attitude.

(Bioware tends to have "types", and then there's what people expect to get)

Take DA:I as an example (imagine you didn't know their preference, only personality and looks):

Cullen: Obviously straight.

Dorian: Obviously gay.

Sera: I would have guessed bi, she is probably a lesbian to make a point.

IB: Obviously bi.

Blackwall: Obviously straight.

Solas: A little vague, but probably straight.

Cassandra: A little vague, she is probably straight to make a point.

Jossephine: I would have guessed straight / bi.

Bioware can only hide so much when their dating sim has a checklist of number of romances per-sexuality-type.

Even if some fans on here did freak out, I don't see that having any kind of dramatic effect on Bioware in the long term. It would still just be normal levels of forum "outrage".

I like when they reveal. Helps me pick which gender I need to play.

I wouldn't mind one way or the other. Though it'd be nice to know who I'm going after in advance

I'd rather not know anything about them prior to playing the game.

Then again, I like to charge in without scanning the battlefield. NOVAGUARD.

Vanguard with Piranha.  Same thing really.

On topic :

I don't think it really matters.  I thought I'd prolly not end up liking Sera in my playthrough of DA:I.  Turns out, she's the one I liked the best.  I'm noticing a trend here.  lol

It does matter actually, straight people need to know how much they are getting screwed over despite the fact that they are majority in who buys the game and keeps bioware running.

I'm with you. I never read any of that stuff myself, though forum chatter being what it is I end up getting exposed anyway.

BioWare shouldn't reveal characters at all before release. /unpopular opinion

Seriously, though, they'd be better off spending their marketing dollars trying to hook people who might not be buying their game no matter what.

As for the hardcore fans, remember that first BW game you picked up on a whim, and how floored you were by the characters? Knowing so much about them before release is going to make recapturing that magic all the more difficult.

I don't even read the forum. I just roll around on my keyboard screaming and not being hurt by the internets. I don't actually read any of this stuff!

It was pretty fascinating to look at reactions to the DAI characters pre and post release. A lot of people did a complete 180 on certain characters after they actually met them in-game.

Either do it or don't but don't repeat the mess of DAI romance announcements.

Who cares about them? If any of those losers went out and got a real girl/boyfriend they'd be too busy to care if their majority group gets mad love in a video game.
