Today on reddit, Afterscore claimed they could do a 100% playthrough of Inquisition in about 50 hours (http://i.imgur.com/VYhlnH4.png in this thread). Later that estimate was sensibly revised up a bit to 60 hours or more. To me, even the revised estimate sounds... optimistic. So, I thought I'd try it myself!

I have experience doing Inquisition speed runs. I have played three no-exploit speed run Inquisitors, two on Normal (around 14 hours) and one on Nightmare difficulty (23:50). Those were minimalist runs - I did as little as possible without exploits to finish as fast as I could.

I found that for me the key to a no-exploit speedrun is doing the most damage possible so that fights go as quickly as possible. Humans have the advantage there, since they get an extra ability from the start, and more abilities means less waiting for cooldowns, which translates to more damage. So I'll be playing a Human. Even with changes in recent patches, Knight Enchanters are still damage powerhouses, so I'll be playing a mage. Dagger rogues are powerful, too, but I have more experience with mages, and I prefer ranged characters. Also, Fade Step can speed up movement pretty much everywhere, so it's very useful.

Needless to say, I'll be leaving Trials off for this run. They're meant to make things more challenging, hence slower. However, I'll keep it on Nightmare difficulty, even though Normal would be quite a bit faster, because I've seen some... optimistic... claims of fast completion times even in Nightmare difficulty.

If there's interest, I'll do some live streaming on YouTube Gaming of the more interesting bits. Otherwise, I'll just be recording my sessions and uploading them to my YouTube channel unedited, with perhaps a little narration.

Wish me luck!

Good luck!

I keep wanting to do a core-missions-only run. But I keep getting distracted by all those lovely sidequests. Damn my completionist impulses.

A run without exploits is not a speedrun.

There are lots of different kinds of speedruns, any%, low%, 100%, game specific completion or non-completion requirements. A speedrun is simply an attempt to complete a game as quickly as possible using a predefined set of goals or restrictions. SDA has Inquisition speedruns for different difficulties, dragon slaying, and more.

Anyway, I have restarted my run this week, after getting to Skyhold just took me waaaaay too long due to resource gathering just taking too long to build Tier 3 gear from the start for my party. Any potential combat time savings were completely wiped out by the time needed to gather all the crafting materials. I had the same problem when I first tried my minimalist no-exploit speedrun - that one ended up going a lot faster when I just used whatever gear dropped and only crafted when I could do it quickly. I probably should have learned from that mistake and applied it to this run!

This time it's going a lot quicker. I'm currently zipping through the hinterlands with just tier 1 gear. I plan on posting highlight videos on YouTube when I hit some major milestones, rather than streaming or posting the whole thing, because let's face it, a 100% run is going to include a lot of hours that nobody is going to care to watch. I am recording the whole thing for archival purposes though.

If you have maps and know the precise locations you need, and plan an optimal order/path before starting 50~60 hours is time enough for a completionist run. I spend 130 hours but a lot of that time is hunting Imbued Tuskets, walking the borders of the maps to complete them and so on (useless stuff). 60 hours seem just fine. 14 hours for speed runs are a lot, You can do a lot better.
Edit: Unless they fix the Combat Roll new rune make a warrior with Combat Roll and use chromatic 2h sword (as soon as you reach haven, golden nug), it is the fastest run ever.

14 hours was with no exploits. I have figured out the minimum number of power points required outside of the main quest line, and a reasonably efficient path to get them all, and I have even tried different runs with save scumming ore requisitions to see if it's any faster (it's not). Of course, with exploits, speed runs of a few hours are doable (and have been done, and are available on Speed Demos Archive). More traditional DA speed runs rely on a few movement glitches, item duping, and buying power points, which make them very, very fast.

Making Tier 3 stuff at the start may seem like a win, but it's actually faster to just go ahead and play through normally and only craft when you know you have enough materials, or money to buy them at the Black Emporium. The main reason is that Tier 3 items take a *lot* of materials, and they take a lot of time to gather, particularly +crit leather and any cloth. The biggest time saver in my 14 hour no-exploit speed run was being overleveled for early main story quests where the harder fights are. Things start to get a little slower near the end of Here Lies the Abyss, where the party starts to be underleveled, and getting through Doom Upon All The World is quite a challenge, even on Normal, for a level 15 character.

I did do those no-exploit runs before the Golden Nug, so I didn't have optimal gear near the end of the game. It's probably possible to do them faster now.

Keep in mind that for my current effort, by "completionist run" I mean all quests, all side quests, all companion quests, all collectibles, looting everything to have max income to buy crafting materials, going through all the dialogue, having a romance with someone... basically everything possible. The "Complete Inquisition Experience." It's not something I would expect most players would ever bother with, but I'm curious what an upper bound on run time might be, given that I think I have enough experience to do it efficiently.

Of course a "complete" run is possible in 60 hours or so, for some definition of "complete." It's probably possible to hit every zone, do the main zone quest lines, maybe even companion quests and a romance. But you won't get all collectibles and side quests in that amount of time, and you definitely won't exhaust all the dialogue trees.

Anyway... PROGRESS REPORT:

As far as the current run goes, after restarting and determining that it was a little over an hour faster to *not* gather materials for tier 3 gear right from the start, I have just finished Champions of the Just. I still haven't gotten to those highlights videos, because they're time consuming and I'm having more fun playing. :) Maybe this weekend.
