Abelas would make an awesome companion as he could be our mouthpiece for ancient elven lore. Since he was around during Solas' rebellion, he might also be able to give us tactical guidance. I know he could be stabbed by Morrigan but people survive stab wounds all the time. He was also a servant of Mythal and it's very possible that he has a piece of himself stored somewhere else. Would love to see him again. If not him, then I'd love to have at least one ancient elf on the team.

In the epilogue slides we are told that elves across Thedas vanish, and even if some few remain, I have to wonder what impact this will have in the next game? Solas will likely factor in and by extension the elves that flocked to him, but will we even have an elven companion or see an elven option offered in the DA4 character creator?

Someone who wasn't previously a companion. I don't think returning companions really work. Even Leliana is a bit hazy for me. They have a unique connection to whatever protag they first adventured with, so anyone new will never live up to it. If they do surpass the old relationship (like Hawke/Anders vs Hawke/Warden), it always makes replaying the old one feel a bit sad.

I think you could push it with someone from a dlc though, especially if they had a minor role. From DAI, I'm not sure. I wouldn't be adverse to Harding. She's enough of a blank state. And Maevaris, like Cole, was introduced in the other DA media, so she's still a relative unknown. That could work, especially in Tevinter.

Leliana. No question about it

But honestly, none of them. Forcing companions from previous titles into the new title's narrative just feels like a fan-service ""HAHA, look who is back!".

Lace Harding

Not that she's my favorite character, but I think it would be really interesting to see her as a companion.  It would be a great continuation for Inquisition seeing as Dorian is more likely to take an important NPC role.

That really depends on set up of DA4. Seriously, no matter how much I want characters' return (because of feels), more reasonable part of me says big "NO" for stupid reasoning.

I want Calpernia in Tevinter.

I am really hoping that the canon has her alive and that we get to see her fleshed out more in DA4. I really liked her. I have to wonder how much Solas really influenced everything. Calpernia seems like someone who would be a follower of Fen'Harel over Cory. She was working for Cory as a means to an end, freeing the slaves of Tevinter. It might also explain a bit more how he came to find her, even though we know he was after knowledge her master had. It could still be tied to Solas or his agents indirectly leading him there.

Hard question.  I didn't think I'd include any from DAI except Cullen but that won't happen.  I wanted Cullen as a companion before DAI came out.  If I had to choose someone that BW could add that would fit, it would be Dorian.  He always ends up as my inquisitor's bestie, all my inquisitors, even when I'm not trying.

I'm with those who don't want recurring companions or even cameos because I love these characters primarily in the context of their friendship with whatever protagonist got to know them first, and would want to continue these bonds instead of starting from scratch. If everyone and the kitchen sink comes but former protagonists don't and barely merit a mention from their old friends either, I'm not happy to see those NPCs again but extremely annoyed.

However, if they bring back the Inquisitor as a protagonist as many people including myself hope, I'd vote for Cole due to his strong ties to both the Inquisitor and Solas. Of course, his diverging personal path and the fact that he was an optional character to begin with are a bit of a problem, but has every reason to stay involved in the story. Going after Solas without him would feel like a big piece of the puzzle is missing.

That is a good point.  Solas' anti-slavery talk would reasonably lure Calpernia.  I want her on my side, though.  Perhaps some abolition talk of my own, along with letting Calpernia know Solas is kind of an elf supremicist and her ears are too flat for him might work? :)

Between all 3 games, if you could choose 1 character to be a DA4 squadmate (NPC or previous squadmate) who would you like it to be?

Greagoir, Knight-Comander of the Ferelden Circle.

Bann Teagan, from Redcliffe.

Either of them would be great.
