Since we obviously can't choose Solas...then I'd say Merrill. She simply is my favorite LI in any Bioware game.
If you could choose 1 character

i had a Dragon Age Dream that is a sad good bye for the Wardens.
the Casting from this Dream:
PC: HOF or OW(depends on your choices whom to carry over)
Shale: As a Grey Warden; Race: Human/Dwarf Hybrid due to a Tervinter Magister using Extra Material that is human and some extra Dwarf. An Attractive Black hair, Blue Eye 5'0'' Lady Rogue that has a healthy blend of Human and Dwarf.
Architect: returning to save the PC and heal him. He is a Mage version of a Rogue Shadow.
Anders/Vengenace: Depending on your choices, You can get either Anders or Demon. Demon is a Reaver/Berseker Warrior with a Secret Mage Spec due to Anders being a mage and creepy in both in looks and in action, great for Evil Playthru. Anders a dedicated Spirit Healer with an hidden Warrior spec due to Justice being a Warrior type. Anders, from the dream had mature in a good way with a more balance view of Templars and Mages and good for a chaotic good playthru. yes there was a boss battle to get Anders, but if Hawke kills Anders within DA2, there was none.
Loghain: if you play your cards right, you can get Loghain, Stroud and Alistar on the same team and Loghain gives a dare to be badass speech to very Drunk Alistar.
Bethany/Carver: They could return and I had selected a Grey Warden Bethany to join.
The DAO:A Grey Wardens can return if you wanted too if you made the right choices.
Well what I do remember from the plot. it is that Your PC(HoF/OW) was in a prison within the Deep Roads and injured(that is why you will start at a lower level), you hear an assault happening and Darkspawns and other creatures dying left and right. Then the Architect breaks down the door and heals you. Depending on your choices with him within DAO:A, it could be a warm or cold reunion. Well the HoF/OW had made some powerful mysterious enemies that doesn't want the Taint to be cured. A lead, leads you to Tervinter and an old friend in the form of the Shale. Shale, now a meatbag, had learn of someone powerful within the Tervinter wanted the grey wardens dead(yes it does tie into the capture and torture of HoF/OW). Well I do remember that there was an massive assault on the Big Bad's fortress with all of the returning DAO:A Wardens, Bethany, Shale, Architect and others. There was a somber reunion at Redcliff Castle with an Exchasted PC and Shale for the victory. My ending was HoF/OW become First Warden, Finds a Cure, Tasks the Remaining Grey Wardens to rebuild the Order. Architect kills the Remaining Servants of the Old Gods/Archdemons that are similar to him in order to help the Grey Wardens. Shale becomes a bodyguard to HoF if he is the PC for the rest of his life.

My initial responses were Morrigan and Dorian, but I think I'd rather them be significant NPCs and us get an all new set of companions.
At the least, I'd prefer any existing characters we get as companions in DA4 be characters we've not had as party members before.

- Abelas: because he's an ancient elvhen, and he would be an interesting companion.
- Fenris: because it looks like we're going to Tevinter.
- Dorian: for the same reason as Fenris...and I adore him to bits!
Abelas is slightly above the others because he hasn't been a companion previously and I'd like to get to know him better.

Velanna. She had a tough time of it and deserves a shot at redemption.

Inquisitor's severed arm which would somehow gain sentience like Thing from The Addams Family. It would come with a wide range of special attacks such as "Cuticle Rage", "Talk to the Hand", "Furious Phalanges", and "Birdie".

Hmmm after much thought I'd love Flemythal to come back royally po'ed (at a certain someones plans to destroy the world)
She would be an exceptional companion, possibly in a new body ? wide choice here, even a Golem or Titan.

Zevran. His story feels a bit unfinished. And I always adored him.

Actually none of my absolute favourites. I'd rather for them to give the unfinished/deranged ones a proper send-off.
Hence... King Alistair.
Though not my favourite, but he was a cool guy in DAO, and he definitely needs a writing-win again, desperately so. All that continuity-tiptoeing ruined & degraded him to a comically uninfluential running-joke. I mean, canonizing his appearance as king and then making the only admirable appearance his alternate one?
Not that it would make sense... But Bethany. She needs to meet a better guy than Sebastian.
Wait... when does Beth "meet" Sebastian? I suppose I unknowingly stayed the good brother by never bringing frat boy along.

As totally bonkers insane I am over Dorian, I don't really want anyone to return actually. I don't mind carryovers generally, especially if they make sense within the story, but I do think they may have gotten a bit carried away with them in DAI. I mean, I liked everyone and all that, but we saw no less than five returning characters, in addition to the various cameos based on import status.
And despite my remarks about Dorian, I am hoping that the next game takes place far away from Ferelden and Orlais (Tevinter!) so we hopefully avoid all that.
But I'll go ahead and answer the question by saying that Nathaniel would be an interesting addition if they can work in the Warden angle again. I quite liked how the friendship developed between him and my Warden and it would be nice to see him as a more fleshed-out character (and I wouldn't mind a romance option...)

If, as seems likely, we are going to Tevinter, then naturally I'd like to see Dorian but only as an advisor/mentor, not an actual companion. It makes sense that at some point he would provide a base of operations.
I don't really want to see any of the other companions return because either they wouldn't really fit the setting up north or it would ruin the way their story was resolved in the earlier games. That said, I don't think we've seen the last of Morrigan, particularly if she drank from the Well.
One character I would like to see return is Calpurnia. It is a possibility since you never see her dead body (and in any case that's never been a problem in the past). If she jumps off the cliff you don't see her land and we are not party to her confrontation with Corypheus, if it ever does take place. She does seem to have great potential for character development, particularly given her origins, and would make an effective "darker" character working to her own agenda but nevertheless someone you could potentially win over to your way of thinking.
Alternatively, I wouldn't mind seeing Scout Harding return. I liked her a lot and again there is great potential for her development as a "good" character. The only thing I struggle with is justifying her presence so far to the north.
I think the final scene in Trespasser hints that on the whole our companion team is likely to be wholly new characters because of the need to have people that our enemy doesn't know.
