So one thing that got me after my first playthrough was Abelas and his markings. Solas says that in the ancient times those who were wore vallaslin were slaves and their masters put the markings on their faces to honor their Gods. This might not be true with the dalish but Abelas is definitely an ancient elf. So is he a slave in a sort of way or do sentinels have some other kind of belief and reason for it? Any ideas?

Abelas is a servant of Mythal, and thus he has Mythal's vallaslin on his face.
It isn't so much slave owners honoring their gods by marking their property, it is the "gods" themselves marking their property.
Solas is a brick wall of lies built on a foundation of half-truths, don't take his word as clear cut.

Slaves, yes, but not in the sense of hard labor. More like slave soldiers. Ottoman Janissaries even. Thats the vibe I get from Abelas and the sentinels.

In essence, it's like cattle ranchers branding their cows with hot iron.
I mean, it's not as crude, but the principle is the same.
