It's actually not very far from contemporary.
The future? It's pretty far off.

CDPR have Mike Pondsmith on-board though... competing directly with that would be a big ask IMO.
I might give that a chance if they have a gender option and long as they don't any of the pre-order bonus crap that Square did for Deus EX: Mankind Divided. I would recommend that no company do that kind of crap again.
If its in modern times, I think they would want to blend Mass Effect with Dragon Age.
Have guns and soldiers in a 2015 setting while at the same time having "superheroes" or people with superpowers to fill the "mage" role.
*ugh*
If it indeed turns out to be a shooter, does that mean that Frostbite has won?
What? The combat has to be, at least to some extent, 3rd-person shooting if it's a contemporary setting.
#Secret.

I highly doubt it's gonna be a FPS. EA's go to guys for that genre is DICE. Bioware handles the action rpgs. I do like the idea of a "modern fantasy" if that's what we can call it. Introducing us to a brand new setting while telling a story about it, is something Bioware excelled at. Least back in the day. We'll see if they still have that magic, maybe they do? I'd like to think there's some kind of creative spark and enthusiasm from developers when making something new, instead of another entry to an existing series.
I am weird, I am kind of hoping for some sort of Comic-book/Super Hero RPG in the end.
That would be nice.
Unless I'm mistaken, the game was basically a co-op multiplayer that was apparently going to be released in an episodic format. Not sure how well that sort of thing would even work. Episodic games don't strike me the type to really gel with the whole multiplayer model. Anyway, I doubt there would be any serious companion interaction, let alone romance.
Interesting... So, they cancelled Shadow Runner (which at least thematically was way too close to The Secret World) - an MP game, and they did it after the game was at a serious enough development state. Now, we have DG working on some un-announced project and we know this is something contemporary...
DAI was based (technically) on the DA-MP. Should we make a conclusion that in the core the game will be what BW could salvage from Shadow Runner, hence - a single action RPG a la The Secret World? Maker, please, make it so!
Could have sworn the new IP was cancelled
You're thinking of Shadow Realms, which wasn't even in development at Edmonton.

This new IP was in the early stages of production before Shadow Realms was cancelled. So maybe, but unlikely.
"Realms", of course! (Where did I get Runnes?) Pity if one has nothing to do with another. But one can still hope?
Hopefully it's set in the modern world. Sci-fi and fantasy england in rpg are done to death.

That would be hype10.
Pre-order announced.
Hmmm... I kinda want to see a ME / DA level Shadowrun game.
But then again, I doubt Bioware could do the setting justice.

It will. They've talked about the challenge of writing for a non-set protagonist compared to Geralt. I can't wait, especially after that godawful MD marketing you mentioned. I'm certainly not buying MD until a serious price drop, or it comes out with all the content they cut.
I'm so happy cyberpunk is making a comeback.

It's a damn shame that Obsidian will never get another try at AP2, the IP had a lot of potential. I hope Bioware makes a super-hero RPG like someone suggested. They'd be perfect for it.

That implies Cyberpunk as a setting was a good game, and Pondsmith a good game designer.
Honestly, neither of which are really true if you look at Cyberpunk.
Maybe back then when it was in its heyday, and the interlock system had one good idea in it with the lifepaths mechanic, but man that game a lot of problems from what I remember playing.

Cyberpunk is a pretty damn awesome setting though. CDPR managed to do a pretty good job with turning he Witcher setting into a video game. I've got some faith they can do the same for Cyberpunk. Besides they've said they're not replicating the gameplay systems of the tTRPG exactly.

Cyberpunk settings to me never make any damn sense.
They are either borderline dystopian, corporate overlords controlling everything, or impossible hacking and technology that represents cutting edge control of the world.
I have yet to play a game that is labeled Cyberpunk that feels "real" I guess. I know it's supposed to be this "high tech-low life" kind of setting, but I never see it as it should be. Like our modern day I would argue is a perfect example of what Cyberpunk would be; were just a hack away from corporate espionage or having nuclear bombs going off.
You're not alone. I feel that this is something that could really be tricky to do well, but I admit that I'd like to see it.
Some of the ME3 class playstyles already 'feel' a bit superheroey to me, what with the punching and the awesomeness.
But yeah, if it's super heroes, I'm probably going to start screaming and not stop until I get the game or my voicebox blows. That could be so good. ...Okay, yes, or so tragic. But I choose optimism.
Bioware tackling a Superhero game would be interesting, given that the Superhero genre is otherwise cornered by Marvel, DC, and then maybe Champions. . .roughly in that order, now that I think about it. ![]()
. . .but I can also imagine it not being that fun if we have limited 'power customization'.
