Before humanity ofcourse. Many links to the elven war with the titan pop up as a source.
Is there a missing link between the magisters and the darkspawn

Going to point out here that it's been confirmed that the Golden City was verifiably golden before the Second Sin, so it seems certain that it was not corrupted over time, but became the Black City because of the Magisters' ritual, and apparently before they physically entered. Either they let something out, or they let something in.
Golden or not, the taint was already there when Cory and company came to the city per Cory's own account. Avernus also concludes that the Taint has a clear connection to the Black City and is alien to demons/spirits. Keep in mind also that the people of Thedas at the time had no knowledge of the taint, so how could the magisters create something that they had no knowledge of?
It seems likely that the gold was an illusion that fell when the magisters physically walked into the city and the blackness revealed itself for what it truly was. Why? I'm not exactly sure. Perhaps the Taint revealed and corrupted the magisters as a security measure for intrusion or maybe the will within the Taint (Evanuris; Forgotten Ones; Old gods; The Maker?) did so for a yet unknown intention and then either cast the magisters into the deep roads or the magisters escaped on their own through an eluvian that led to the deep roads.

I'm also pretty sure the Taint was not a security measure, otherwise Solas would know what it does. Unless it's a security measure for something much older than the Veil. But that seems unlikely at this point.
It is a genuine possibility that they let out the gold, since the Chant of Light speaks about a river of light before them when they opened the door. I would be somewhat disappointed by this explanation though.
Actually, no, it entirely depends on what that something gold was to make it either interesting or disappointing. Maybe the gold was the defense mechanism, preventing the Taint from taking hold of anything, not sure why opening a door would **** that up though.
I'm pretty sure I know what the Taint is (an elemental power that the elves called The Sun), but I'm not entirely sure how the Black City fits in.
